I've become a bigger fan of Taylor guitars since I started working on them more often. I came dangerously close to buying/rescuing an early-80's 710 last year that just spoke to me. Curious though Bill; have you played any of the new ones with the V-class bracing? Or any of the Gold Label models? I'm wondering if they stick with these designs or if it's just a trend (as I highly suspect these red J-type guitars are I was griping about upthread) and they return to the legacy models.

I like to see somebody try legitimately new ideas, but I keep landing on the same conclusion - that there's a some percentage of us who just don't care about new-fangled stuff.

Using myself as an example, the last new guitar I bought was a Martin in 2024, but it was a Custom Shop order with a bunch of vintage specs. Prior to that was a new Alembic bass, also with a bunch of vintage touches. Before that was another Martin Custom Shop, 1920's spec 00. And those are just what I bought new. Even when I buy one, and support the team it's seldom if ever "off the rack". Granted I'm an outlier, and I think a lot of this group is... or we wouldn't be here.

The only new Taylor I've played is a 10 string!  Very interesting guitar.  I'm certainly not a traditionalist, I just like guitars that please my hands and my ears.  My "nice" acoustics couldn't be more different:  the aforementioned Taylor 810, a 1970 Martin D12-20, and a Beardsell.  I also love my Voyage-Air ... the best damned travel guitar ever made.

I don't think I've played Bill's Taylor - but I can second his opinion on the Martin, Beardsell, and Voyage-Air!  The Beardsell is probably among the 5 best I've ever played (along with a New York Martin, a 1900 00-21, an early '80s M-36, and a David Dolack - though a '53 D-28 might edge the M-36 out).

Peter (who will add that I do not mean to take anything away from the other 2; both are fine examples of what they are - the Voyage-Air is actually amazing for a travel guitar!)

Here's one that the player, who works at that same store, thinks is the best guitar he's ever played; and I think sounds pretty good.



It's a Ken Walker.  The notes below the video are pretty interesting, and include remarks from Ken Walker as well.  He worked for George Gruhn and Guild Guitars.

And I found this restoration video very interesting.  Those of you who do this kind of work might not find much of interest here, but I wanted to share it just in case you might.  He obviously put a lot time into this guitar.

Mostly follow-up on my previous post towards Bill TGO; that tied-in with the running theme of new wave guitars vs. old school traditional builds and whatever draws us to them. But I figured you would enjoy that one in particular. 😉
