Poll: To Dot Or Not???
« on: March 01, 2013, 09:46:16 AM »
Not that it is odd, or maybe it is. I now have 2 Alembics that have no neck inlay of any kind, other than the dots on the edge of the neck. I was wondering how many other Alembics out there are also dotless or inlay-less. Anyone feel like chiming in???

The Excel, Epic, Orion, Essence and the Rogue don't have the oval inlays as standard option (and the Classico and fretless basses obviously)

Here's my ovalinlayless Alembic:

Most of my basses don't have dots. I order them that way. It is a clean and elegant look that I prefer.

Those are all beautiful basses! Mine only has my mom's initials at the 12th fret. I don't miss the neck inlays at all. As an ear player, I instantaneously count the number of frets up or down from where I am at the moment and shift accordingly. It becomes subconscious and seems to work for me. Most of the time, that is...

Your bass is one of my all time favorites Sam. Beautiful lines, the omega and bird of prey are wonderful design elements. Enjoy it for a lifetime in good health and inspiration.
Here's one of mine no dots.

My Orion's have no markings on the fretboard and never bothered me. When I've I gotten lost I have always used the side markers to reorient.

Not sure if this counts. Both of the Series 1's that were built for me have inlays but they are not aligned with the fret positions. They can be seen here.

Danno, I am flattered and humbled, what with your arsenal of fabulous instruments as listed in your profile and the beautiful and exquisite tribute to your own mom, Kay. Thank you.

I am actually a fairly 'visual' learner, even with music. That means the more visual information on the fretboard, the easier it is for me to play, espically on a dark stage. My favorite playing guitar has a tree of life inlay and that helps me to play.

I have one custom built bubinga guitar that sounds amazing but has no markings on the neck. I can't even gig with it for that reason.

Hey, Dave! This shot was taken at a park associated with the Oakland, CA estuary not far from where the Raiders play. This view is looking westward towards San Francisco, which you can just make out in the distance on the right side of the pic.

No dots on the fingerboard (fretless)     Ovals on the fretboard (fretted)

But have to have the side dots

My doubleneck is dotless:

I don't think the dotlessness bothers me at all, though of course there are dots on the side of the neck. Wish my Stanley Clarke 5-string was dotless - I bet that would be cool! I also have a Guild fretless M-85 II that is dotless with dots on the side where the frets would be.
