I have dots, MOP blocks w/abalone wedges, and naked; makes no difference from where I sit - can't see any of them from behind the guitar.  As Stephen says, however, side dots are not optional.

I've got nekked fretboards on both of my customs.  I like the clean look of it.  However I'm not opposed to fretboard eye candy.
