Are Alembics addictive......or is it just me?
« on: March 18, 2006, 12:04:06 PM »
Here are my symptoms. Daily checking E-Bay for Alembic deals, making and revising a list of Dream Bass specifics, saving the empty boxes I get from Alembic just cause it says Alembic, I love the Alembics I have, but it always seems there is another one I want. Should I worry, or is it normal?

Mike,
Loving Alembics and wanting more - normal
Parking the Lexus in the weather because the garage is full of Alembic boxes - worry (However, someone just gave $160+ for an old Fender cloth.)
Making a prioritized list of the Alembics you want to buy next - normal
The kids going hungry to feed GAS - worry
Checking e-bay to see what things are currently going for - normal
You're probably okay.

You're utterly right that they're addicting.

I love my other basses.  Yet EVERY time I pick up the BigRedBass and start playing, it just RIGHT THERE . . the action, the look, and the sound.  I always hear every note on the BRB as if they were under the light of a Super Trooper.  My other axes, this part of the neck, that tone from the pickups, then I start noticing the construction and hardware . . . well it's just not fair to them.  And they would be just great had I not know about Alembic.  I often say if this was a piano, it would have to be a Bosendorfer or German Steinway.  It's just that good.  It's truly a lifetime instrument, not many electrics you can say that about.  To me they are a perfect blend of art and technology, a blend that often leans too far to one side or the other. Not these.

I often joke that IT owns ME and not the other way around. It's ALWAYS in the back of my mind.
As I can scarcely believe I'm fortunate enough to have it.  I could care less what they cost, as the way it makes me feel is priceless.

Plus the best part is it reminds me of the wonderful people that built it and the gang of friends I've made in this forum.  Only makes it all the more special.

My heartfelt thanks to all of you, and everyone in Santa Rosa.  Where would I be without the (BAD)Paul, Bob, Dave, and Susan, Val, Mica, Mary, and everyone in Santa Rosa?  Not often in this cold old world you can get adopted into a great family!

I know I'm gushing . . .

I think Olie's coined some new words ...

Alembigamist - 1.  Owner of more than one Alembic instrument.  2.  Person actively playing or owning more than one Alembic instrument.

Alembigamy - 1. The act of owning and/or playing more than one Alembic instrument.  2.  Description of multi Alembic ownership.

And I'm proud to say I am an Alembigamist!  May I not be the first or the last!

With tongue firmly planted in cheek,

Alan

Mike,
Well, I have heard you refer to one of your Alembics as your other wife.  Sounds like Alembpolygamy to me.

I think my Alembigamy has gotten out of hand. Last night my oldest daughter was out of town, my wife and I had the house all to ourselfs, nuyk, nyuk , nyuk,. And then....yep....you know what happened. My wife slips up to bed ........puts on some Marvin Gay.........lights a few candles.........and I' m sitting down stairs with a set of head phones plugged in to my MK 5 till 2:30 am this morning!
Ain't love grand!

Olie,

You realize, of course, that as a married man you're going to hell for that bit, right?

Ah well, look at it this way ... at least you're not out running the streets.  When and if this happens again, just tell your wife that you're committing adultery with an inanimate object of your affection.  I'm sure it will go over well - NOT!

I have probably had 25 or so Series basses over the years.

Nah, they are not addictive at all.

My name is James.  Since my first experience with a Spoiler, I have ventured into stronger and more potent forms of Alembic.  Over time I even became heavily involved in Alembic trafficking.  Yes, I bought and sold Alembics.  I've even encouraged others to partake of Alembics.  On occasion I have directed potential Alembic users to my supplier.

As all this was going on, I started actively seeking pictures of Alembics on-line.  I've downloaded pictures, I've posted pictures.  Then I ran across pictures posted by some guy named Rami.  I delved into a new level of voyeurism.  I guess in the 12 step process, the first step is admitting you have a problem.  The next step is seeking help.  Well, I don't want help. I want to continue to feed the addiction.  Anybody got a problem with that?

Peace,

James
