Difference between F-1X and F-2B
« Reply #15 on: July 18, 2007, 09:03:52 AM »
David, in Denmark we have had the most rainfull winter, spring and first part of summer ever.
We hardly got any snow during the winter, only rain and lots of it.
Right now in our summer holiday the temperature range between 15 and 20 degrees celsius. You wanna switch? Be my guest. I would love to come to Tennessee :-)

As for the Alembic experience I have to disappoint you.
I don't know if you can find Alembic products in Denmark. I have never seen one.
So I don't have any experience at all!
The reason I asked about the difference is that I plan building a preamp myself. (I hope I won't be expelled from this community by saying that...)
It's not a difficult projekt. You can find the schematics for the F-2B on the internet, but not the F-1X. So it's gonna be the F-2B.

For now I'm playing a Fender P. through a G-K 1001-RBII and an Ampeg SVT410HE.
I came across Alembic when I was checking the gear of Nathan Watts. He play the bass on Stevie Wonders I wish. A fabulous bass line and an outstanding sound. Dry, compressed and a creamy distortion.
In an interview in Bass Player he mentions that he used a Fender J. through an Alembic on that track.
I just have to try it.

Henrik, your English is superb.

I have tried learning a second language (Spanish) and have not really been able to discipline myself  so that much progress can be made.

Weather-wise, we had a very late winter/early spring freeze and it killed (or stunted) most of the fruit trees, plants, hardwoods. Then this summer has been so hot and dry that most of the farmers and gardeners around here have pretty much written off the year.

The folks on this site will help you any way they can. I am not a technical person in the least, so I will be no assistance on your projects; but I will be following with great interest.

There are a good many Alembecians on your side of the Pond who are very active in buying, selling and trading guitars, basses, electronics, etc. There are also used Alembics posted for sale by members here on a semi-regular basis. I hope to one day have the funds for a custom to my specs straight from Calif.

I hope you get a chance to try (and own) an Alembic bass someday. Ebay is a place to look, however be careful there and make sure you ABSOLUTELY know with whom you are dealing. You can get burned on ebay 'cause I did once.

I Play through a GK 700RBII and an Ampeg SVTVR. (I back that up when necessary with an old Sunn Coliseum with two 18 speakers). I have not really been doing a lot of heavy playing in the past few years, really only using the lighter rigs. Don't know what kind of bass your are playing, but it sound like it may be a Fender. I like the Fender basses.

If you get a chance, look for an Alembic. I really think the Epic Alembics are very, very nice instruments and carry a huge sound. They are every bit an Alembic bass as are all of these custom works of art.

Please, keep us all posted on your progress and if you have electronics questions or just want to bounce off ideas, please post them because there are lots of folks here who a great deal of knowledge and expertise and are always willing to share, explain and help whenever possible.

Good luck and God bless!

I play a Fender Precision (Fender P) and temporarily a Fender Jazz Bass (Fender J).
What kind of cabinet do you use?
I was at all seas choosing a cabinet for the G-K, but finally got up with the Ampeg.
I kind of regret buing that cab cause I realize I can build one a lot cheaper.
I found a guy in Laconia, New Hampshire, Mr. William Fitzmaurice who sell plans for a variety of PA and bass cabinets.
They look very ambitious.
I'll let you know of the progress of my F-2B project.

With the  GK I have a 2x10 cab with horn on top and 1x15 on the bottom. I like the GK head because you can bi-amp and really get a growl off the woofer and keep the highs crisp out of the horns.

on the Ampeg I have a 4x10 Classic. I really love the sound of these two amps running together, with the modern snap of the GK and the vintage thump of the Ampeg tubes.

My rig is also something of a 'Frankenstein' at times. I have the Sunn with 2 cabintes with 18s in each one. I blew the originals long ago and currently am running Peavey BW in those.

I also have an old Fender Tube PA running through an old Sunn scoop cabinet with 2x15 in that one. Another rig is a Hartke with a 2x10 and 4x10 and various smaller amps and confrigurations.

I also play guitar (I am a bas player first) and have several guitar rigs including a Fender Deluxe reverb.

I would really like to try out an F-2b and a superfilter. I too have a 1984 Fender P and a 2005 Fender J with the S-1 switching along with a 1972 (I think)  Fender Tele bass (all are American models).

There are occasional lively discussions about the Fender basses around here, but I believe most players respect them (if not tolerate them) because these guys paved the way for the electric bass as we know it. (I myself like to play different instruments. Each one seems to bring out something else in my playing or mindset.)

Have a great weekend all!

Henrik,

If you decide to build one of the BFM cabs, please post some results or email me off board.  If you use the search function you'll find at least 1 or 2 threads about the BFM cabs.

David, you most certainly have a variety of gear. Wasn't it hard to descide what to bring along on a gig? :-)
I too like the punch of the G-K, although i play rock.
I did try other heads like Ashdown, Eden (Nemesis), EBS and Behringer, but none of them had that G-K snap. (Don't laugh at the Behringer. I have the BX4500H and it's a mean machine. You can't get better bang for the buck, $300)
I haven't tried the bi-amp 'cause the Ampeg cab isn't bi-amp-able. But that will be changed in near future.
It's because of the snap I want the soft sounding, tube driven F-2B.

Thanks, Toby.
I think I have read almost everything about BFM available on the internet. I am very thorough in my research on new topics.
I only need to order the plans.
He gets thumbs down by the tech-nerds and thumbs up by his users.
I'll go by the active users who have tried the equipment.
It's not only a new bass cab I'm looking for, but also a whole PA for my band.
I'm very keen on the Omni 10 for bass cab and a combination of DR250 and Titan 39 for PA.
The only problem is the availability of Eminence speakers in Denmark.
I could buy from Germany or England but at a higher price than USA.
Import from USA are 30% in toll and taxes, plus freight (toll and taxes on that too).
Add 40% to the american prices and you have danish prices. (That's another way to say we don't want to do business with others than ourselves).
