Snowmageddon/Snowpocaalypse '26 pics?
« on: January 24, 2026, 02:22:39 PM »
The first flakes are falling here in Southwest Virginia now. It's a very fine powder. We'll be okay if it stays like this.

I'm in my shop, doing fretwork to pass the time. Drinking about 40,000 volts of coffee. Just in case I can't make any tomorrow, I made an extra pot this afternoon, and canned it ip in some jars. I expect in the event of an extended power outage, that alone will improve my attitude... mmmm... probably 15-20%.

Nothing to take pictures of yet, but the rooftops and the road is white now. Whatchall got?

My 5:30 AM Coffee is usually mandatory when my cat insists on interaction. It makes me more productive as well.

No snow to speak of here in northern IL, but temps in the 5° to -15°F range.

Here in the upper left hand corner, it’s a cloudless day and 46 degrees.   Strange how the country is getting hammered and Washington state is untouched.

When I got up this morning there was a solid sheet of ice on the porch.  While I was making coffee, the wind started howling and the outside temperature started rising rapidly; the freezing rain has turned to rain and the ice is melting.  Driveway still looks bad; we won't be going anywhere.

In Kansas City, we have about 4.5 - 5 inches of powder on the driveway. That is the low end of the pre-storm estimates, but we were at the northern edge of the system which went through over the last 36 hours. The cold is the main thing.

we haven't really had winter in the mile high city this year up until now.  however, we are getting a blizzard o'hype aboot the football (US) game this afternoon.  juat got back from taking the dog out for her morning mile-and-a-half constitutional.   6 degrees (US).  bright punk-a$$ low in the sky winter sun in my eyes the whole way no matter which way i'm facing.  pfffft. long johns.  balaclava.  this ain't the winter i grew up with in these parts.
Been down...now i'm out!

So far... so good.

Last night we got about 3-4" of very fine powder-like ice crystals. It's a strange mix that's almost easier to sweep than to shovel. I did sweep it off the porch and the stoop, then shoveled a path to the carport and the shop. It's starting a mix of sleet and freezing rain now, but it's so cold that it seems to be hitting the ground and freezing instantly. I can't see any accumulation at all on the power lines or trees, which is very good. Might be totally different on the other side of the mountain from this valley though, and it only takes one big tree...

We're all good here right now. Sounds worse to the south. I could get out if I needed to... little AWD buggy would manage this slop okay, but there ain't much reason I can think of to leave the shop today. Ima finish this refret job, drink a buncha' coffee and keep my fingers crossed the luck holds.

Yeah, but it's Denver; tomorrow it may well be 65°........

No snow here in Minneapolis but we’ve had several days when the high temp has not reached 0 degrees and at night it’s been getting down to - 25 here in the cities and close to -40 near the Canadian border. I had to move to indoor practices Friday and Saturday for the high school cross country ski team I coach because the high didn’t come close to reaching -4 F which is the minimum temp where we can be outside AND they canceled school in many districts around the state.

They cancelled all the schools around here on Friday and (judging a quick glance at the middle school across the street) today because of sub-0 temps.

When I was in 8th grade, they loosened up the rules; when it got to 0° (these are given in Fahrenheit, all you out there in the metric/Celsius world), they let the girls wear pants to school - as long as they weren't made of denim.

We got hit pretty good on Sunday in the near northwest suburbs of Chicago, but it was manageable. I waited till 3 o'clock, then headed out and started moving the snow off the walks and driveway.

We had snow Friday into Saturday, which became sleet, and then it rained for 8 hours, so all of Nashville looks as if it's all been sprayed with clear polyurethane.  We're going to 3 or 4F overnite tonight, and the weather bulletins are warning about frostbite exposure times.  It's anIce Storm in capital letters.  There are trees down everywhere and 150,000 with no power.  Extended forecast finally takes us over 32F first of next week.

I've got big limbs down in my yard, but except for a pretty skinny mimosa from next door that split and is leaning on my garage, we were very blessed to have not lost power (or heat!) and are doing just fine, if somewhat marooned till the streets get a little more attention.

I hate this, but it's in the 30's in my favorite Florida panhandle getaways, so whaddya do?  But again, we're blessed to be in the middle of this far better off than many.

I'm useless resizing pics to post here, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

I received a report that the hotel district of East Nashville was all out of power... the whole shootin' match from Donelson Pike over. (that SPBGMA thing was going on down there this weekend...)

We didn't get hit as hard as I expected as it was mostly sleet and what came down as freezing rain only lasted a couple of hours towards the end. No power outage and the road out front melted off far enough on Monday so we have dry road to the top of the hill. However our yard and natural areas are still covered with ice and I don't see that changing until we get out of the 30's. The county public school system has been on remote learning for three days but my granddaughter's school opened up today as did the other area private schools (if they hadn't already opened yesterday). The forecast calls for more winter weather this weekend so I am holding off on hauling the generator back to the shed just in case.
