« on: July 19, 2024, 07:21:48 AM »
The Kennedy Center just announced this year’s honorees.  Among them:  the good old Grateful Dead!

About time!  I mean, it's been years since they honored Led Zeppelin, and they sucked.

Was just sitting here pondering the irony;

The Kennedy Center decides to properly honor the Dead, who I hear got the whole namesake from someone honoring the Dead...

Their music was nothing but volume and bombast; their lyrics plagiarized or lame.  U2 made a hard run at the title, but Zep remains The Most Overrated Band Of All Time.

Bonham was a cheap imitation Moon, Page was nothing more than the 3rd-best guitarist the Yardbirds ever had, and I have always suspected that the reason they processed Plant's voice so heavily was to hide it.

Jones can play a little, I will grant you, but overall, there nothing this side of rap that get my finger on the button faster than LZ.

when i was working in the electrical shop, nothing would polarize the prolertariat like LZ coming on the shop radio. to the point where we had to issue an LZ ban.  myself, didn't like 'em in the 70's, still don't like 'em now.  as i find myself a crusty old geezer wondering how many days i have left on this mortal coil, i still gag a little when stairway to heaven  comes on the muzak at the grocery store.

Robert Plant went to the hospital every three months to get his balls pushed back up so he pretend he was Janis.  Here’s the pinnacle contribution to our culture for which LZ can claim any credit.

IMO Zeppelin was a good studio band, in the studio they had the discipline to make some classic records. But, I thought they were a terrible live act, really sloppy tedious wankage with little musical substance, all the worst excesses of the 70s rolled into one package. I give them a huge amount of credit for never touring again after Bonham died, to this day they could still regroup and make a fortune. Interestingly it was Bonnie Raitt who called out both LZ and The Rolling Stones for stealing songs from the old blues artists without crediting or paying them. Page also ripped off Bert Jansch when he stole his arrangement of the traditional song "Black Mountain Slide" for the first LZ album without crediting him. Some dicey karma there for sure.

   In defense of only Bassist/ Multi- instrumentalist John Paul Jones from " LZ" who is a highly skilled musically literate musician .I actually like his chops . He ,Phil Lesh & Jack Casady influenced me as a 15 year trumpet player who picked up on the bass guitar to play rock & roll with his guitar playing friends .

JPJ was not one of my bass influences but otherwise sonicus is spot-on with his assessment of his talents. Someone gave me a copy of his 1999 solo release and the first thing that popped out at me was the unmistakeable sound of an Alembic bass. His album was all instrumental and featured a number of multi-string basses as well as bass lap steel, Electric Mandola, guitars, organ etc. You can clearly hear who was largely responsible for the Zep sound and studio arrangements, it would have not been the same band without him.

JPJ's talent was as wasted in LZ as Mel Schacher's was in Grand Funk Railroad.
