I predict that (besides, of course & alas, "Touch Of Grey") it will heavy on Workingman's Dead and American Beauty.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

If we're voting on a setlist for the honors, put me down for Althea, and Black Muddy River. And if they have time, West L.A. Fadeaway.

Dark Star - all those other songs can be incorporated within it.  ;)

"Dark Star is always playing somewhere. All we do is tap into it."

I've seen this quote attributed to Jerry (or maybe heard him say it on a radio program). Does anyone have a citation for it?

It was in an interview with Charles Reich; I saw it in his & Jann Wenner's book Garcia: A Signpost To New Space.

Peter (whose main hope for the awards ceremony is that John Mayer won't be there...and that Jimmy Herring & Joan Osborne will)

Just heard Jimmy has Stage I Tonsil Cancer.  Beginning treatment immediately and Wide Spread Panic is cancelling shows.   Healing thoughts for Mr. Herring.   Glad they caught it early.

About 20 years ago ,I was delighted to have the opportunity to study this academic analysis of "DARK STAR", as performed on the "Live Dead" album version . The staff notation greatly enhanced my insight of this timeless masterpiece.

Wow, that's going to take longer to read than the music lasts! (That is a good thing - a testament to the depth of this music that is so easy to experience, so subtle to understand fully.)

Thanks for the link to that paper. Live/Dead was very influential in my early growth as a bass player.

Songdog You are very welcome .
The subtle aspect in playing it with graphic examples of various important motifs-riffs were noteworthy .I as well was influenced by the Live/Dead album in my early growth a bassist .Dark Star was essential in developing fluidity and muscle memory of the fingerboard resulting in my feeling of expressive freedom .

And Vijay Iyer to play King Solomon’s Marbles, which he did a nice version on a compilation album a few years ago

Thanks; I hadn't heard this before.

From the new _Grateful Dead Bulletin_:

"The Grateful Dead has always been about community, creativity, and exploration in music and presentation. We've always felt that the music we make embodies and imparts something beyond the notes and phrases being played - and that is something we are privileged to share with all who are drawn to what we do - so it also must be said that our music belongs as much to our fans, the Dead Heads, as it does to us. This honor, then, is as much theirs as ours."

And, just to ice the cake, also being honored is the sublime Ms. Bonnie Raitt.  Somewhere, Brother Paul is smiling as much as i am!

Personally, I think it would be great if the performance focused on songs no one even knew the GD wrote and performed to create a "What the f...." experience (e.g., Liberty, If I Had The World To Give, Mission In The Rain; Heaven Help The Fool, and of course, The Eleven, etc.)

I suspect they won’t be playing “Casey Jones”!    As the Cozmic one previously predicted, I imagine the 1970 twins, American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead, will be well represented.

wow...I love Zeppelin, and a couple of their albums would make it onto my " trapped on a desert island for life. what would you take with you ? " list, and it is safe to that the first LZ album is what turned me onto bass.

All the other stuff, accusations of plagiarism, etc..is between them and the people that are accusing them of it..  I don't care about that stuff.

What intrigues me is that I read somewhere that JPJ had trouble remembering chord changes and would often have cheat sheets laying around on stage to help him remember tunes..

Gregory, No, no, no, no, no. Don't let Peter hijack the thread again. :D This about The Dead and their well deserved honor.

That will probably have someone play Truckin’ for the classic line, but Ship of Fools would be a nice slow tune to mix in, one of my favorite tunes 😊
