49 years later, some things never change
« on: July 30, 2023, 06:05:52 PM »
49 years ago i picked up the bass after graduating high shcool.  not much later it was a hot summer night.  somebody's basement.  2 guitars, bass and drums.  louder than...heck.

fast forward to 2023.   just put myself out on bandmix a few weeks ago.  get the call and show up for the audition.  hot summer night.  somebody's basement.  2 guitars, bass and drums.  can't tell if it was louder than heck 'cause i'm mostly deaf from 49 years of this.

what's different now is we had someone that actually could sing, much nicer equipmnet and some of us actually picked up some chops along the way.

so - looks like i'm gigging again.  the MKdeluxe is gonna get some crowd face time.  already got one lined up for the 24th next month on east colfax.  all we gotta do is polish 12 songs and show up not looking like we jsut fell offa the turnip truck.  not sure what our name is (or what the other players names are, for that matter) but i present to you BeenDown's band's first selfie filched from somebody's tablet that got left laying around unlocked

Looks like a nice basement for playing music; acoustic panels, bass traps in the corners, cabling suspended from the ceiling.

this is actually a studio/practice space that's in a residential nieghborhood in parker colorado.  pull up - it's a big rambling McMansion in opulent colorado suburbia.  go inside and they got a completely soundploofed basement.

the good news - show up with my axe, pay my $12 and rock out. no muss - no fuss.

the bad news - ya get what they got laying around for equipment. i had a 2x10 ampeg combo amp of some sort cranked to the max going up against a coupla half stacks, a drummer and a barrel-chested singer.  i told the studio owner that amp was about 1/4 of what i need and did she realize i was playing a 5-string?  looked at me like i was from another planet.  i'm not afraind to pound the stuffings outta my bass and so that's what i did.  thought i was gonna blow those speakers right outta the baskets.  went on  for two hours.  apparently they did such a good job soundproofing that they people living upstairs couldn't hear us.

If they think a 2X10 is a bass amp, you have a moral obligation to try to blow those guitar speakers!

there seems to be a perception that a 2x10 with a 250-watt head by itself is a bass amp.  i'm here to tell ya that it ain't.  at least if you're gonna play at volume and not have your lower 2 strings dissapear into sludge when ya lean on em like i does.  i could see the grille cloth flapping on that amp when i was pounding on it.  it was good nad hot when we wrapped up.  haven't tried a 4x10.  not really interested when i can get all the thump i need out of a good 1x15 and a coupla hunnert watts.  i'll use the 2x10 for my mids and highs.

as i'm prepping for another day in the woodshed, i got to thinking about this studio setup.  i think they're getting $100/hr (cash only) for rehersal time.  apparently they got people standing in line for it because we had to jockey for a time slot.  all the gear was stuff that you'd find laying around the used pile at GC.  so i think they're making money hand-over-fist for not a lot of capital investment.  if something craps out, there's at least 3 GCs in the metro area and they all seem to have well-stocked used gear pile.  apparently the nieghbors haven't picked up on the business activity there.  gotta wonder what the guys at the zoning office would have to say about it.

it's funny - any self-respecting guit@r player woulda turned tail given that option for an amp.  a bass player has to grin and bear it or bring they own amp.  pretty sure they undersized the bass amp just for guys like me who are gonna pull out all the stops to make themselves heard just to make sure no sound leaks outta the basement and blows their cover.

<edit>
btw fyi i'm also here to tell ya a MKdeluxe can pretty much take anything i can dish out (at least with my hands).  didn't go outta tune.  sound of the bass pretty much swamped out the sound of the crappy amp.  drew a little blood yesterday.  last time i did that i was beating the crap out of a bass with an OSB body.

Yeah - I firmly believe that 10s & 12s are fine for bass when they're on top of 15s and/or 18s!  (which not to rule out 21s.....).

Bass requires air movement.  And the argument some offer that 4 10s give you a 40" air column is mistaken; it gives you 4 10" columns.  I wanna feel the lows.
