Who else is living with back of neck dings?
« on: June 10, 2019, 02:53:30 AM »
Bought a Fender C.S. 62 reissue with stack knobs back in the fall.  While I love my Alembics a great deal, this bass is simply amazing and the neck just plays great.

A month later, being in an overly tired frame of mind I put a small ding in the neck right behind the 3rd fret while trying to juggle holding my bass in one hand and grabbing a piece of equipment with the other. .  My thumb hits it every time i play in that position.  While it's obviously still playable, it does trigger my O.C.D.

Took it to one luthier and he pretty much said to leave as it's too small to fix well.

Haven't had a chance to take it elsewhere and frankly Im hesitant to do anything as Im afraid someone trying to fix it will somehow screw up the way the neck feels.

I have one in about the same place!
The small dings on my bass are character marks that make it special.
Not bothersome for me, don’t fret about your OCD, we all have ‘issues’.  I have anal retentive streak(s) in other arenas that are absolutely absurd.

I've gotta admit, back of neck dings bother me more than they should!  :o But they're usually more trouble than it's worth to repair.

Such dings are not that difficult to repair yourself.  The first method is to try to raise the wood with moisture.  Take a small piece of cloth, like a piece of old T-shirt, and soak it with water.  Fold it once or twice and place it over the ding.  Then take a hot soldering iron and roll it back and forth over the wet cloth on top of the ding.  You may have to re-soak the cloth and apply the iron several times.  This will sometimes cause the wood in the ding to swell back to shape, or closer to it.  If this doesn’t work, or only partially works, the next step is to fill the ding with super glue.  Depending in the size of the ding, you may have to use several layers of super glue.  Once filled, it can be sanded with fine sandpaper (400 grit or higher).  I have filled numerous dings with this method.  You can usually still see them, if you know where to look, but your thumb will no longer feel the ding.

^This^ Exactly this. If you can't deal with it, (and I totally get the OCD stuff) then get it fixed.

I think all my basses have dings on the neck and elsewhere. It bothers me most on a Modulus bass because the finish comes off in a layer, so it's got an edge to it. But, it rarely bothers me while playing.

I have a couple. I was sad at first. Now they help me find my way around without looking down, especially when I’m reading.
