So, I was reading the history of Fleetwood Mac on Wikipedia, and I got to the part where Clifford Davis obtained the rights to the name "Fleetwood Mac" and proceeded to take another band on tour, billing them as the genuine article.  Lawsuits ensued, Fleetwood, McVie, McVie, Welch, and Weston (?) got the rights to the name back to the extent they could start recording, and the "Fake Fleetwood Mac" was long gone as was Davis.

And then it seemed to me that a band named something like "The Return of the Fake Fleetwood Mack" could be largely unmistakeable for the genuine band, as "fake" is in the title, and "Mack" is spelled differently.  It seemed funnier to me that while mildly entertaining, mildly, it could sound at least like a legitimate coverband's name.

So, I thought I'd ask the Forum, even though this idea would never be realized, nor should it, is immature, dumb, and is just bad, what are the funniest off-brand/shameless rip-off band names that you can think of which carry disclaimers in their name to avoid a "cease-and-desist" letter?

-A classical metal jam band, "Swedish Phish"
-A French Prince tribute band, "Le Petit Prince"

And I ran out after those three.  Takers?  No?

"fade to Black Sabbath"? "Empty Primus"? "Faded Red Floyd"? "No Rush"?

Cool.  I am a real PO$, and I thought "Children of the Grave" alone would be great for Black Sabbath, but that it was also kind of mean spirited.  "The Blizzard of Don Arden"?

  • What chaos . . . ?
A wee off topic:

I was in a band named Decter Bracket for quite awhile.  Which was originally known as The Smiling Faces just after high school... that had something to do with recreational activities and our constant smiling faces (see what we did there?)

I digress, there was a brief moment in time when our lead vocalist/ rhythm guitarist had to take a hiatus and we had a gig that we were committed to.  We (now a 3 piece) forged ahead but changed our name to protect the innocent.  We went on stage as Pull My Finger - and told people “we stink”.

Somewhere on a hard drive I have a few pictures from one of our shows, we actually rocked and both the band and the audience seemed to have a real good time!

Peter,

I agree with you in many ways, but I would also have to/hope to believe authentic heavy metal that relied on musicianship far more than showmanship has existed or does exist.  Like...The Blizzard of Ozz's tour of the UK in 1980 in their street clothes, Motorhead's classic line-up comes close in my mind, despite being a rock and roll band, The Scorpions with Schenker/Schenker and Schenker/Roth are less garish in terms of being a spectacle while being a fiery hard rock band, and The Alice Cooper Band which is just sui generis.  I think I take your meaning, e.g. King Diamond's/the Blizzard of Ozz's American stageshow, but I gotta believe there was heavy metal, hard rock, heavy rock that didn't go too far over the top on stage compared to "Camelot" by Rick Wakeman.  :)

That said, ever heard of a country band called "The Blizzard of Ozzie and Harriet"?  Me neither, but they'd probably sell out in Branson, MO in a flash.

Slight detour, but the would-be Fleetwood Mac went on as Stretch, of "Why did you do it?" fame - a question supposedly directed at Mick Fleetwood.

Great song, that one.

I'll have to look for it, but there's a hilarious interview somewhere, where McVie talks about that crazy time their names got hijacked. It's rare John ever does interviews anyway, but that one stuck in my head. The footage is from his old place in Hawaii I think.
