Alembic Logo Placement??
« on: February 13, 2017, 04:08:58 PM »
My bass will have a 'narrowed for straight-pull' Elan 3+2 headstock... lately I've been trying to imagine what logo placement would look best.

It's going to be just the standard bronze logo, surface-mounted, either with or without script (?) and will be set onto a cocobolo face, if that helps with visualization.

What do you folks think - set between tuners 1/5, or right above the nut? Here's a couple samples...

This is one of those items where I'd be better off if someone else decided for me... just curious what you all think.  ;)

First thing - with a cocobolo top - that's where my eyes will be - so I think whatever placement of your logo, you'll be fine.
That said - I like the between 1-5 placement - the logo is center and the tuning business is peripheral to it.
All the best on your new bass
Ed
ps. Really looking forward to see some pictures when it arrives

I like the first option. But what about somewhere else altogether on the bass? The infamous #12 has an interesting logo placement.

Or maybe a smaller logo at the end of the headstock rotated 90 degrees so it's up and down when the bass is being played?

I dunno, but I figured if an Edward and Ed were already part of this thread, I better be #3 to chime in!

Top option, between 1-5.
Right above the nut doesn't work for me.

I like the 1/5 placement, but I'm really wanting to see the grain before I commit.

If it were for me I would choose the top option, with no script, the headstock looks more balanced visually.

I knew there was a show me your headstock thread somewhere. Here it is and it might give you some inspiration for your decision.

I've got an inlaid logo on one of my basses and it's just above the nut and I feel it got lost. With that said I vote for between 1 and 5.

Edwin I like that idea of having the logo elsewhere. If I ever get the money to have a custom I like the idea of having the logo on the upper half of the body in line with the 24th fret so that it is upright when the bass is being played. if it's a shorty i hope there is space between the tailpiece and edge of the body to have the logo inlaid there. Also I'd like them backlit too but not as bright as the fretboard LED's but very subtly so they kind of glow.

It's funny... at one point or another, I've had thoughts reflective of everyone's here. (including Edwin's, that I take a cue from Keavin's Old #12 and locate the logo elsewhere on the bass!)

One minute I like it best positioned right above the nut, the next, I like the more 'centered' location.  ::)  The only thing I'm more certain about is, *no script*, just the logo.

On my Persuader 5-string, it's right above the nut with 'Alembic' script underneath, and (like Darrell said) kinda' gets lost there. Looks better there IMO than up at the point, where they always seem to look crowded to me. Also, just thinking in geometric terms, if the strings pull up the headstock in a straight line to the tuning posts, it wouldn't be any more visible in the center between 1/5. So there's an argument to be made to just match the bass I have, and put it behind the nut. Wonder if anyone ever mounted a logo on the 'horn' of an Elan headstock?

 :-\

Think I'll just let Mica call this one... can't go wrong there.  :)

Thanks for all the comments fellas.  ;)

The logo might pop more if you go for black hardware, and a silver logo centered?

My 88 Spoiler has the period-correct chrome tuners with the brass logo - and script - just above the nut, might give you an idea of what it might look like when you start mixing it up.

Thanks Adriaan... it's funny how the same thing looks so different in an alternate context. ;)

I settled on gold hardware for this one, to go with the brass parts.

I tried the first impression test on my Dad earlier this morning... He, -like most here- preferred the 'centered' location on the 3+2 with dark wood example, but also agreed there wasn't much way to mess this one up, at least not at this point.  ;D

Here's the headstock on my Persuader 5-string... I'm completely fine with this look, maybe sans the 'script' underneath... just trying to visualize it on a darker background. I also like the way Jimmy J's 5-string is done, with the 'script'.

Here is mine that I feel is lost, partly because it's on Buckeye Burl but also because it's right over the nut. I love the Idea of having it on the body with back lighting? How about in the second fret with a dim LED?

Ha! Those TI Jazz Flats with the extra-long silks don't help either.  :) Notice they wind a little further up on the 32" scale Persuader?

That Buckeye Rogue really is a sweet-looking bass Darrell. I bet it sounds awesome with those flats too. ;)
