I'm currently thinking of purchasing an Apple Mac, but have heard that some websites are not very Mac friendly. I'd hate to find out that this was the case with the Club after buying! Does anyone out there have a Mac and if so could you advise as to whether you've had any problems? Just don't get too technical please as I'm not much of a techhead I'm afraid!

As we speak (=write) I'm using an Apple Macintosh. I use a G4 and have no problems whatsoever. Even better, no more virusses!!! Check out Garageband, your first step towards Protools...

Hi Bill,

I'm using a Mac Powerbook 3400c, running OS 7.6 which is about 6 to 8 years old and have no problem going to any part of the Alembic website and most other sites as well.

If you get a new Mac you should have no problems ( I really need to update/get a new Mac but I'm getting a new Alembic so the new Mac will have to wait )
I've read about Garageband, looks very interesting.......... I'm old school and use Passport Encore, Alchemy & Master Tracks, Opcode Galaxy & Vision and MOTU Performer.

Matt is correct Macs are less likely to get viruses.

I've been using Macs since 1990, they are very user friendly and reliable computers, you won't be disappointed.

Bill,

I don't own or use Macs, but I'm a wannabe =).

I currently use Mozilla Firefox as my main browser, and have very few compatibility problems. Since Firefox is available for the Mac, I'd suspect that you'll have very few actual compatibility problems.

The one thing that definitely won't work is any kind of activeX stuff, but activeX is how so many spyware applications get installed.

I think you'll be really happy with it (unless, like me, you have specific technical reasons not to use it). The general fear that it'll be incompatible isn't really well founded, and things get more compatible as time goes on.

Go for it.

I use both PC and Mac at work, but choose the Mac (17 Powerbook - G4) for home and personal use. It runs Pro Tools, Reason, and of course Garage Band with ease and is the heart of a fairly nice little mobile recording/mixing station. Compatibility on the web has never been a problem for me and viruses are basically a non-issue for the Mac. It is truly plug-and-play (something I cannot say of any of my PCs) and, I believe, still the best choice for creative work.

In terms of the Alembic site, I know that Mica takes the Mac OS into account during development.

Definitely no problems with this site, using Safari and OS X.

Every once in a while I do run into some site that won't work properly, but this is pretty rare now, much less frequent than a few years ago. Currently, I can't fully access one of my retirement accounts, but don't remember running into any other problems in many months.

Macs are great, and OS X keeps getting better and better. As a software developer working from home, mine gets quite a workout, but the last time I rebooted was over 90 days ago - and that only because I was installing updates.

But I like your priorities - if I couldn't access the club, that would be grounds for a new computer!

You can't go wrong with a Mac. They work period. OSX is rock solid. Protools is a piece of cake on a Mac. They cost more but they are built for now and for the future. I'm trying to validate getting a G5. Truth is, my G4's are still great. Funny that I never need to validate getting another Alembic.

In my humble opinion (i'm not an expert...) Just add a mail application (like outlook or entourage...) and fil in your accounts there. When you start up those applications they will be used for your mail.

I mainly use Entourage - but if I click on an email link on a web page, say, it opens Apple Mail. I've checked all the help files but haven't been able to figure out how to make Entourage the default.

Very simple: go to the preferences in MAIL and make entourage as your default mail-application

In my humble opinion, Apple Mail has a better junk mail filter than Entourage. I used Entourage for about a year. I was complaining to a friend about how much junk mail I get and he turned me on to the junk mail filter in Apple Mail. I've used it ever since.
The advantage of Entourage for everything else is that you can link your address books with your calendar and your email. Apple Calendar and Address book seem to be a bit more complicated in thaat respect.
I highly recommend MAC over any PC though. Just because that's what I'm used to though.

The only link I have a problem with was the one posted here that gives printouts of tone circuits EQ curves of various amps (e.g. the F-1X). That website was only setup for MS.
I'd like to see where flat response is on my other three amp setups: an Ampeg B-2R; an SWR Workingmans 12; and a G-K Backline 110.

Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate the time you've taken to help put my mind at rest. It was the girfriend's idea initially to get a Mac (I didn't think we could stretch to it), but seeing as once upon a time I trained as fine artist/illustrator (a long time ago in a galaxy far far away in fact, long before I'd even seen a pc!) and seeing as I would like to start to make some use of those skills again (never mind the recording possibilities)I thought it might be a good way to go. Looks like as soon as we can get the money together, that's what we'll do. I just didn't want to lose the Club!!!!! (perish the thought!)

Mac Rules !!!!, is the best thing you can have, i have a G4 mirrored drive, using Jaguar OX, and never had problems with it, its a little expensive in a way but really worth it.
