Awesome Brother's Band Live at the PNC last eve!
« on: August 26, 2004, 07:01:22 PM »
The Brother's were in fine form last eve @ the PNC in beauteous Holmdell, NJ (right off the Garbage, er um, Garden State Parking Lot, er um, Parkway, LOL!). The Crowd was mellow, the weather was perfect...cool enough that the leather had to come out of the Tourpack on the Road King on the way home. I got there just in time to miss Los Lonely Boys as the warm-up, grab a big, cold, frosty and a giant pretzel ($11.75!!!), grab my seat and chill to some great toonage!

Greg still sounds good, and Warren never ceases to amaze. His playing continually evolves, probably due to the fact that his guitar(s) never get cold since he's touring with Mule, The Dead, and the ABB all at the same time, LOL!

Oteil was particularly awesome during his bass solo immediately following the triumvirate of Butch Trucks's, Jaimoe's and Marc Quinones's 20min drum odyssey during In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. He mostly plays an old clapped-out J-bass for the old material, but he came out with this quilt-top 6-string bass (didn't catch the name, but it ain't an Alembic) and played jazz chords on it. He played his own rendition of IMOER and then did a scat solo where he sang along to his bass solo. It was very impressive.

The ABB always seems to attract the best musicians, especially guitarists and bassists. Berry Oakley was no slouch himself! Oteil is a nice compliment to the band. It appears he could compliment just about any band, regardless of style.

First off -- I'm new here-- hello everybody
And I just saw ABB in minneapolis -- I think it was the best show I've ever seen- great wheather ,Great live sound and yes Awesome performance, BUT , I was a little bummed that LOS LONELY BOYS didn't open that night ( which they were slated to play originaly)
But the very next night I saw LLB play the spanish music awards on t.v. with santana which was awesome in its own right.
Did anyone here see this on t.v.?
their bassist was playing a 6 string Alembic
that I couldn't quite make out the model -- Europa maybe?
--its was a beautiful bass regardless.
CHEERS! Brad

It is possible Los Lonely Boys didn't play the night I went either. I was late, but not that late and I did think at the time that  it was weird that no one was playing considering the time I got to the show. They weren't clearing up any equipment off the stage either, but I just shrugged it off as missing the whole shebang. Oh well, I have never heard them before, so I apparently don't know what I am missing.

I don't know anything about Los Lonely Boys; but just looking around on their website and doing a web search, it appears that the bass player, JoJo Garza, mainly plays a Hohner Bbass VI.  Could that be the bass you saw on the Latin Grammys?

Yeah, anything is possible -- But it seemed too me that the Alembic symbol was unmistakeable between the strings at the nut.
I also looked at their website and JoJo is also listed as playing swr amps and cabs-- And i know I saw two ampeg 410hlf's behind him- So maybe it was a rent-a-gear night for them ?

And by the way; welcome to the group, Brad!

I just went back to the Los Lonely Boys site and listened to the track Heaven.  Nice little R&B tune.

I saw Los Lonely Boys on one of the evening talk shows (can't remember which) and I could swear JoJo was playing an Alembic 6. I was only half paying attention to the TV, but remember thinking it was cool that this guy had an Alembic.

Yeah, If any of you guys (and gals)like ABB-- Los lonely boys would be right up your alley-- I am not to fond of their radio friendly songs though-It's good stuff- just not as good as some of the other jammy stuff they have recorded.
If you're like me and find yourself standing in a record shop thinking what am I gonna buy this time around---try LLB-- you might like them.
