Dead Movie Re Release

Slightly off topic - I was at the Scottish HiFi show on Saturday and bought a brand new 180gm pressing of Live Dead. The sound quality is excellent - as you'd expect. Makes up for having to wait until next year for region 2 copies of the dead movie and festival express. I also picked up a mint condition copy of Graceland. Bhagiti Khumalos' fretless playing throughout this is stunning. Got JE Too late the hero on CD aswell

I was watching the Grateful Dead Movie yesterday, and really enjoyed the first half hour in which the Wall of Sound is featured and the part where Phil Lesh's Alembic is opened up at the back, discussed and taken for a testdrive. Very impressive stuff!

I watched the movie last night.  It brought back  a lot of memories.   I hadn't seen the film in many years.  Having been at, if I remember correctly, 4 of the 5 shows during the run, I remember thinking at the time that the Dead were not at their best.  (This is essentially the consensus about these shows).  I also remember not being very impressed with the film when it first came out.

Well, I guess time has softened my impressions as I found the film very enjoyable last night.  Of course being able to play along from the comfort of my living room may have had something to do with it.  (This was something I was unable to do previously as I neither had a guitar with me at Winterland in '74, nor the necessary chops at the tender age of 19, and had previously seen the film in a theater, again sans guitar).

One thing I noticed was that Jerry's Wolf guitar appeared to have a little stain making it a little more yellow/amber/orangish than the natural maple used on Further guitars.  Looks very nice.  I'm thinking I may want to have something like that done to my forthcoming custom Further.

While they may not have been at their absolute best, they have been much worse, LOL! To me personally, the Pig Pen era was their finest hour. At the time of the movie, they were pretty much burned-out from ten years of grueling touring and were at odds with Mickey over financial issues. Keith was a decent (if inconsistent) player , but Donna was mostly caterwalling, LOL! Still, the relatively youthful Dead does a decent job, short-handed or not.

Personally, I think the Dead made a good choice in replacing the Godchaux's with Brent Mydland..he sang better than Donna, could do a decent male lead voice and was a decent on the keys.

The movie bonus disc stuff is particularly nice...with a promise of more things to come from Dead A/V Archivist David Lemieux.

On the new bonus movie disc, I am particularly enamored with The Other One and Weather Report Suite. With the latter, I can't get Weir's sublime jazz chord progression out of my mind (WRS intro).

Can anyone who has the movie confirm the region encoding. i've looked on tower.com and they have a statement saying it's region 1 but further down the page it says it's region 0 which I presume means it's region free.

Mine's region free, and Amazon.com also lists it as 'all regions'. You can safely purchase this perfect set of classic Dead. Enjoy!
