What's in your gig bag
« on: January 14, 2009, 05:51:05 AM »
Okay, we will have to be careful here, we don't want to incriminate ourselves!
So we all carry them with all sorts of paraphenalia in them..here is my list(I think I can remember!)

Guitar leads..loads of them but do they all work!
XLR leads for DI to PA
9 volt batteries
folding guitar stand
residual current breaker - never plug into anything without protection if you see what I mean!
4 gang power extension
2 gang power extension
Zoom B1u unit for tuning and some effects-very seldom used live
Deodorant
Towel
Mini tool kit
fuses
Spare strings
Notebook & pens
Music file just in case you forgot the chords
Patch leads
Music stand

I think that is the lot

WOW, I'll bet that bag is heavy. LOL

My list is simple;
Strap
cables
Tuner
Guitar stand
If I'm using my combo amp I'll take my DS-5
And tons of chewing gum.

It is not too heavy as most items are small but once requested then it is included.

Deodorant?!?!?!  What a concept!  Maybe that's why I haven't been getting the gigs...

Fine suggestions all!! Additionally: DI box (currently a SansAmp Bass Driver), spare pair of (folding) reading glasses, mini-flashlight, philips screwdriver, assortment of allen wrenches and truss rod adjusting tools, microphone and cord, clip-on light for music stands, wire nippers, electrical tape, tuner. You can tell I don't have a roadie...

This is an excellent idea for a thread.  I can't remember what all is in my bag; but it is heavy.  My guitar stands are in a separate bag with the midi pedal board.  The DI box is in the back of the rack.  Tuner and effects are in the rack.  Tool bag with everything an Alembic bass requres; flashlight; power cable; power strip; 5-pin cable and spare; speaker cables and spares; spare instrument cable; duct tape; electrical tape; there may be some masking tape; spare set of new strings (actually I think I'm behind on this); spare set of used strings; strap; spare strap; set list; wipe down rag; digital multimeter; I think there is an XLR cable in there; there should be some spare patch cables for the rack; pencil/pen.  That's all I can remember at the moment.

Oh man, you guys really don't want a list from me! In addition to playing bass through an SVT, I also double on keyboards (Yes, that's plural!) AND run the live sound. I use a mini van with the seats folded flat, and it has no room behind the driver/front passenger seats. In it are the following:
SVT 810
SVT CL Head
Yamaha 01V with 2 8-channel add on preamps
2 PA power amps
(2)15-inch horn loaded PA speakers
1 Bin with 20 XLR and 20 1/4-inch cables
1 Bin with power and speaker cables
32 channel snake
88 key controller
61 key synth
39 key synth
12 space rack with synths and submixer
2-4 guitar stands
4 space rack with DS5R and SF-2
AT LEAST 2 basses
Foot pedal keyboard controller
Drum mics
4 SM58s
6 SM57s
extra power adapters
at least 3 stereo DI boxes
Keyboard stands
Phillips and regular screwdrivers
Flashlights
Batteries (both 9volt and AA)
Tuner
Strings
Towels
Paper
Pens
Set lists

Set list? What's a set list? Oh yeah, now I remember: it's that sheet of paper someone in the band spends a lot of time on, and then becomes completely superfluous at the gig.

I gotta ask, Ken - if you're doing sound and playing, what's the snake for?  Do you play from the middle of the room, or do you do a lot of running?

Peter,
The Snake is more to keep cables from tangling around the performers, with the stage box situated in front of the drummer, the mixer goes on the far left of the stage, leaving only 1 large cable between the mixer and all of those mic and keyboard connections. It makes setups much quicker and more organized. Since the mixer is digital, the key channels are routed via midi to my main controller, so once everything is set, there's no need to run back to the board.
