Bass amp submerged in soap
« on: September 04, 2010, 03:09:13 PM »
Not a happy day my friends. My long time friend/ bass player borrowed my eden WT 330 head and 1x12 cab for an audition he had last week. Kept it in his trunk, along with an industrial sized jug of laundry detergent. Needless to say, the heat caused said bottle to explode, flooding his trunk several inches, literally submerging my head up to the controls. The cab is soaked as well, but the head is completely corroded. Sending it out to Eden tomorrow, which will just end up in more bad news. I don't think the thing can be salvaged in the slightest.

Bummer Sam.  Hope your friend takes responsibility.  This is NOT the way to obtain a clean tone!

A bummer, but what you lost are mass produced, easily replaceable items. Not like a custom bass or  a really old instrument with some mojo. Who knows, you may end up with a different rig you like even better! Could be a blessing in disguise.

Hopefully your friend will come through with replacing your amp.

This is why I dislike loaning any of my stuff out, I was burned once badly.  I loaned  an expensive piece of equipment to a person who was a good friend at the time, and it came back in pieces.  He must have dropped it or something.  The guy refused to make good on it, and I was out several hundreds of dollars.

Sending it out to Eden tomorrow

David Eden sold the company to a music comglomerate, who outsources everything now.  To send this to Eden, is to pick a repair shop from a list, and hope they have the schematics for it.  When two of my units went down, within a week of the other, I sent mine to a place in NJ, who said they might not be able to fix the WT 1250, as Eden does not even have the schematics for it.  I lucked out, and it was just a problem in the power supply and they fixed it.  If any real trouble shooting was necessary, I would have had to trash it.  WT 300's are pretty old, but at the price hourly charges of repair shops these daze, it would probably be cheaper to replace the head.  Used WT 300's on eBay go pretty cheap - Just a thought, and eBay is always a gamble . . .

When David Eden owned the company, he built a very good reputation for qaulity and service.  That is gone.  Now I look at my Eden stuff as if they break down, I may have to replace them with other products I can put more trust in.  I hope you come out of this situation without loss, as the only thing you did was to do a friend a favor.

I'd certainly agree with P Nigel, it's a waste to send it back to Eden.  USMusicorp (the umbrella that owned the post-Nordschow Eden) recently sold out to another conglomerate.  Since you're in New England, I'd certainly think there's some great repair facilities in the NYC/Boston corridor, and I'd try one of them.  Or, you could work from the list of repair stations in Eden's website in that end of the country.  I wouldn't ship mine back to Eden under any circumstances.  I prefer standalone repair shops:  They have to make their money with repairs, so they usually get it right most of the time.

If I thought I could make it work with my insurance guy, I'd PAY somebody to drive my Metro around with their jug of Tide . . .

I have to say, that's really the WRONG way to go about cleaning up your sound.

I dunno, I think with that much soap you'd probably get really big bubbles. Maybe a gig with Giant Mutant Don Ho, or a role in the forthcoming movie, Godzilla Vs. Don Ho?

'Scuse me whilst I try to hijack this thread. As the owner of an Eden WT400+ head I was wondering if it was made during the tenure of David Nordschow or if it is suspect of some type of inferiority. BTW: I LOVE that amp and have never had a problem with it.
