Anyone know anyone that doesnt work?
« on: November 02, 2008, 12:14:26 PM »
vent time...
I mean work at all..I know a couple of people that for whatever reason dont have to work and have very little responsibilities. they are also high maintenance and require a fair amount of attenion...

they just dont seem to understand that people who do work for a living have very little free time.....one guy I know has no responsibilites, no job, etc...and just doesnt understand how I am unable to hang out 2-3 times a week for hours on end (I work 40+ hours a week, have a one hour commute to work one way, and have a band commitment, in addition to the responsibilites involved with owning a home)..

I have known such and they have been cultivated by their enablers to live off the fat of the land (ie other peoples money). They tend to wallow in their own emotions and have very little tolerance for the working stiffs. I have no time for the like anymore and as such save on cards around the holidays. I fear for my social security. Stay strong my brother! Stay strong!

I've always dreamed of being a landed gentleman, but alas, I remain among the plebes. I know some folks who are fairly well off, and nice though they may be, their perception of necessity and my own differ somewhat.

Let's not generalize.  I believe in forming my opinions of people on their character rather than what they do for a living.  If how they live does not involve criminal activity or any other way that affects me (or my tax dollars), then it's none of my business and we have no right to judge.
I know MANY people who are High maintenance and require alot of attention who work 40+ hours a week as well.

Well......not really generalizing....i just see a common denominator. Those that I have known  that do not work for whatever reason, seem to have unreasonable expectations of others time and schedule, and do not seem to grasp the idea that working stiffs have limited availability and cant be expected to be around all the time...

When my mother passed away a couple of weeks ago, it was pretty much me making all the arrangements, and me cleaning out her apartment, etc...still had to work on top of all this...so for that two week period that ended this past friday I was pretty much maxed out and exhausted mentally and physically at the end of the day...my non-working friends just did not seem to grasp this and seemed offended by my lack of availability....

My sincerest condolences for the loss of your mother.  I know that feeling as well. I think that those who don't consider your feelings and situation show more a lack of character than anything else.  When I lost my mother and then my sister, I really found out who my true friends are.

Do I know anyone that doesn't work?

Yes, I do.

Me!

I'm currently not working.  Of course, I guess that depends on what your definition of work is, since I pretty much stay busy all the time.  But if your talking about doing stuff that you get paid for, I'm not currently working.

I'm not working either, but ...

I'm in cooking school in Vermont, where I work in school kitchens, though I don't get paid for it.  In fact, I'm paying them for the privilege as it were.

This being said, I still get paid.  After twenty years, 2 months and 19 days in the Army, I get a retirement check every month.  So I guess I can say I gladly worked yesterday for a paycheck tomorrow, to paraphrase J. Wellington Wimpey.

There are self-absorbed, needy, whiners who will eagerly suck up all of your time and resources who don't work, and there are self-absorbed, needy, whiners who will eagerly suck up all of your time and resources who do work.  I generally try to avoid both types, but also recognize that sometimes I am one also.  Life is a big circle in many ways.

Gregory, sorry for the loss of your Mother.  Having been the one who took over and got the needed things done after her passing, you should note that your character has been tested and has passed with flying colors at a time of great anguish. And as Rami posted, this probably has helped you sort out who your true friends are..

I find my life is too short to waste time on people I don't really want to be with.  As it is, there isn't nearly enough time to spend with the people I want to spend it with.

I guess that sums it up....apologies to you folks who  do not work and are not needy whiners..

There are a lot of people around the world who don't work. Some by choice others by circumstance. I'm one by circumstance and am trying diligently to change that. Those who don't work by choice and choose to leech off the system and those around them are the ones I have issues with, and I am currently dealing with that in my own household. It's not easy....

Gregory, I am grieved to hear about the loss of your mother.  I lost my father a few years ago, and went through some mentally challanging times.  My mother is not in the best of helth these days, and I know sooner or later her time will come, too.  It is nothing any of us can get away from, but such situations are when friends count the most.  If those around you did not jump in and help in your time of need, I do not think they are worth much as friends.  I can be very obtuce at times.  I would certainly go way out of my way to help a friend in need, but maybe they would have to let me know they needed my help.  Anyway, post anything you want here, if it makes you feel a bit more releaved.  Take care.

I guess my previous post did sound a bit judgmental.  I will amend my position to that quoted above.

My 13 year old doesn't work.  Damn, I'm jealous!  Whose idea was it to pass all those pesky child labor laws anyway?

On a more serious note, I think there is a  difference between not working, and not working at a job for pay.  My wife doesn't have a paying job, but try and tell her she doesn't work (then duck!).  The types that bug me are lucky sperm club members who don't understand and/or appreciate their situation.
