A giant has fallen

It pains me greatly to tell you that the irreplaceable Hubert Sumlin passed away yesterday, 12/4/11, at the age of 80.  Can any among us say he was not an influence?  I think not.

I met him at Fur Peace Ranch; a very friendly guy, indeed. I had the pleasure of seeing him play a show with blues greats Bob Stroger and Willie Big Eyes Smith; I was in the front row and his onstage amp was at my ears' level, about 15 feet away. He was crankin', too!
Yes, he was a huge influence on so many, and he will be missed. He gave us so much!

Sad so many of the greats are movin' on these days, alot of them don't or didn't get the appreciation they deserve in my humble opinion in the later years.

Great video Dave.
You can see by the way he is playing how much he loved music.
RIP Hubert.

Sad to hear - some of my all-time favorite music features him. Thank you for some great guitar playing Mr. Sumlin!

I had the opportunity to see Hubert about a year ago, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. He played with so much feeling.

Great picture Ben - after meeting Hubert you probably already know what a decent human being he was.

Hubert called Milwaukee his home.
Turns out one of the older machinist here at work is good friends with Hubert's local 'chauffeur'.

The machinist spent many evenings hanging out with the two of them. Yesterday he shared some wonderful stories that he heard first hand from Mr. Sumlin - and each story confirmed that besides being a legendary guitarist he was also down to earth and a very gracious person.

The stories are far to long to re-cant here. But feel free to ask me about EC's guitar and Hubert at the next Gathering! ;-)

Thanks, guys. The backstory was that I was at FPR when Mr. Sumlin showed up for that evening's concert. I was thrilled just to be in the presence of those guys; but when the photographer was ready to take photos of the celebs, they invited me to get into a couple. It was for no other reason than camaraderie, (surely not because my musicianship is in their league!) and I had never even met Mr. Sumlin before! I guess he was just like that.

Hey Paul - Didn't realize you were in MKE.  I've read many of your posts in various discussions.  I'm in Greenfield, but play mostly down Racine way in a classic rock cover band.  Hope I see you around.
