spose,       I am on another forum called 'The Ampex List. The Engineer who recorded  If I could only remember my name  is also on  The Ampex List . At an appropriate time when we are in a discussion I will ask Mr Stephen Bancard who is the engineer that engineered that recording regarding his recollections of the description of the bass's that both Mr, Lesh and Mr. Casady played on  If I could only remember my name  .

According to Phil's book & a pic I've seen of the sessions (but can't find now) he played the Alembicized EB.  Don't know about Jack.

Peter , The Alembicized Gibson EB is what I would say as well . I will ask Mr. Barncard at an appropriate opportunity. It would be nice to corroborate the information with him . If there were to be  a case of no recollection on the matter It would be a good reason for me to go to Mr. Lesh's Venue.  Terrapin Cross Roads and ask him what Bass he was playing on  If I could only remember my name. In addition I would ask about American Beauty' and  Working Mans Dead.     This is now on my  TO DO LIST !

thanks wolf, that would be great!
Give that album a listen again and review the bass tones. Tell me what you think. If it is indeed the EB, then that is the best sounding gibson on the planet. crystal clear, clean, warm round low end...not your typical gibson EB.
I've used this album for pure alembic tone example in the past. Pretty amazing it's not a total Alembic bass. Goes to show the electronics are a huge part of the sound I guess.

thanks man!
