When someone (almost always very young) asks if I am/was a hippie, I usually say yes, just because it's be too hard to explain the etymological details of counter-cultural self-identification to someone with no frame of reference. Occasionally, though, I'll say that no, I'm a freak; I know hippies, but they're all 10 years older than me. If I really like the kid, I'll expound.
