My list of friends includes some I only know through facebook. I am aware of all the arguments against FB and have no rebuttal except this: Thanks to my love of aviation history, I have an Italian friend who shares the most incredible and rare shots of WWII Italian warplanes and pilots (all with Italian captions I can't understand, mind you) that are simply a joy. And thanks to him I have a new-found appreciation of Holocaust Day and the particulars of humanity at its worst, followed by its best.

At the other end of the spectrum, I've gotten more personal communications from fellow Alembic fans via FB than even from our forum. My point is that you can control your degree of immersion and participation in FB by your privacy and other settings. It is what you make of it.

If you subscribe to the belief that art in general and music in particular will point the way to Mankind overcoming our shortcomings, then FB is just another conduit to that end.

I'm finished. Soapbox air is too rarified to remain lucid for long. And my Alembic bass is telling me to shut up and play!

Building up a collection on my profile, FB can be misused by the minority AND it is always the minority that spoils it for the majority.
FB allows me to talk with my daughter who lives in Dubai and I have also contacted some long lost colleagues from my college years so in my opinion it is a great place but I repeat..as long as it isn't used for any political, religious, racial or slanderous rantings it is fine by me.
Maybe we should start an Alembic group on FB???

Although I don't mind connecting with members here on my facebook page, I feel that this Alembic forum is a better place for the resource of alembic knowledge to be centred rather than have it less focussed and spread all over a general social networking site like facebook.

I can see that facebook may be a better place for some of the more highly charged/emotive topics that raise personality clashes and don't always have much to do with Alembic instruments that come on here now and again as there would be no involvement from moderators. Members who wished to express themselves in a stronger or less censored manner could do so  without raising the temperature of the forum with heated exchanges. Maybe opening a thread here with a link to the facebook thread would work well for those situations.

One of the other things I prefer about using this forum is that I can choose to get involved with the information on the threads. Facebook would push all the subsequent responses to something I may only have comment on once to my wall if I respond to a thread. And.. since my wall is readable by my friends they would also end up with stuff that is of no interest to them.

Maybe I can find out how to stop that in the settings but i don't find their security system very user friendly.

I have to agree with Jazzyvee - this is a better place for public discussion, partly because the information is available to anyone, not only those registered with facebook. But for private conversations facebook is easy (though maybe private email exchanges is safest?)

But feel free to friend me - search for gyokyo - made my Stanley sig as my profile pic to make me easier to find!

Oh, and don't forget to check out the SoundCloud thread - that's another fun place online where we can share recordings - I've got an Alembic Players group set up too.

I like soundcloud because you don't have to give up your rights to media posted.

Unlike FB where they have rights to pics, etc. posted there...and their data-mining probably permeates private messages and anything else they can gleen from our participation.

I have enjoyed finding old friends and family that I wouldn't have otherwise...but the constantly changing privacy policies are a hassle and more and more it just seems like they want to be a Big Brother with no concern for it's little bro's welfare.

Nice to see some of you on facebook. I should warn you, though, I tend to write political rants! It's one of the things I love about being here, it's free of that kind of thing and is a different kind of community. I like being able to have places that are devoted to different things that require different types of etiquette. I have no desire to try to act and look the same way in every part of my life. The only common denominator is respect for people's integrity. I welcome other people's points of view and can't stand ad hominem attacks. FB can get extreme and I have recently defriended someone because he went on a binge of insulting my friends through a thread I started. Not cool. I don't like to have to be a moderator on my own FB wall with people I've known for more than 20 years.

I love the atmosphere here, where we are guests of the Wickershams and I try to treat every place I go on the net with a similar perspective. I don't mind disagreement and sometimes a rowdy time going there, and it's great when people can do that without crossing the line of attacking each other personally.  I also really love places like this where we have a common interest and it's important to be very circumspect when veering outside of that interest.

I think we've been slowly adding each other. One thing that's nice about facebook is that you can create pages and groups for your musical projects. Not sure which is better, I have one of both and just post in both. Feel free to join or like them:

hieronymous page

hieronymous group

The addresses in facebook can be confusing - if you start on your own profile page and then go to a group then your profile address is stuck in there. Hopefully my links will work!
