Mmmm. I'm thinking my 5-15 was early 2000's, which gets it in under the wire. I'm thinking they made a Sting sig. Terz too about the same time. The 5-18 and 5-21 had relative success in the 20th C. Marty Robbins played one. I don't remember a 5-28 but I'd have to check the Gospels of Michael and Richard to see if any show up in their production totals.

According to Professor Google, the 5-28 debuted in 1898 & switched from gut to steel in 1916; doesn't give a hard end date, but says 5s "faded out by the 1980s".

Of course, anything seen there should be taken with an Illinois DOT snowplow full of salt, but that's what I found.

I looked it up to see for my own curiosity.

There are listings for Size 5 in Styles 16, 17, 18, 21, 28, 30, 34, 35, 42, and 45, from 1898-1987. (that doesn't include the T's or G's.) Some of those are one-off guitars. I see only one 5-35 listed in 1971. Only one 5-45. Only two 5-42's. By far the Style 18 was the most popular. The 5's were reintroduced early in the 21st C. in a couple Styles and Signature Models. Claire, Sting, 15, 16. There may have been others but I remember those. The sales guys currently working the floor aren't old enough to.

I think it's cyclical. These will bloom and fade. I think it's cool they're doing it but I don't want one.

A bit before Tut Taylor passed, I came across a link where he was offering 11 sets of Brazilian for $1K per; had I an excess of fundage, I would have grabbed them all & had Martin make me an enhanced 45* I dreamed up late one night in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, 00, 000, M, M12, & D; could have doubled the number of 5-45s!

*Start with a snowflake 45, with Adirondack top, grained ivroid binding & engraved gold Waverleys.  Add pearl back strip & neck border, and 6-point snowflakes on the (rosewood, ala 36) bridge wings.  At the 5th fret, swap the outer 2 inlays for cannabis leaf clusters.  Headstock, inlaid script logo; between the tuners the Shimer College "Graduation Elm" logo.  Heel cap scrimshawed with either a monogram my grandmother designed for me or the Greek letters ΛΣΔ.
