Is that an iPad holder on the end of that mic stand?
jazzyvee
-
It is. I use Unreal Book for all my charts. But it is also a Series II/Starfire. I know there are some pix around here of the SI shorty....
-
I and the guitarist in our group both use the iPad holder attached to the neck of the mic stand. We both use Set List Maker app to keep track of our setlists (instead of paper on the floor). Works great! You can customize each entry to show key and add notes.

I\ve been using the forScore app (its really for classical music but works great for any genre)where you can also make up setlists, sort, AND annotate directly on the score/chart.
I gotta check out that Unreal Book app though! Oh and a pic. would probably be in order, (I know, I know)...

This raises an interesting conundrum: I didn't think that the third arm would actually be photographable!
I wonder if it was a trick of the light? Exposure time? Infrared?

3 arms? great for tapping...

Wow Coco bolo Elan with Europa electronics what a great bass.
Jazzyvee
-
Thanks! A little hard to tell from this pic but it's macassar ebony. I've wanted one like this since I first saw the wood and this one came my way in May...
-
Yeah i should have looked a bit harder. It sure is a beauty. I have a weakness for ?lan basses. That dark top with the light edging of maple showing looks very spectacular.
How are you finding the brightness of the tone?
Jazzyvee
-
It is bright, but it's full. I just added a 15 extension cabinet to my amp set up for a little more low end punch. I've always played with a bit of a trebly edge so it works for me. The filter always seems to end up wide open with the bass boost on, treble boost off but not cut... I've found my sound.

Great pic V. Where was that taken?
Graeme
-
It was taken by my other half at the festival I played at last night. The colours were all strange so I changed it to monochrome and messed around with it in iphoto.
jazzyvee
-
i believe alembic should create a multi page collage in the brochures of lots of these wonderful pics we post here or write a Book which i believe is way over due.
-
I recall offering to do that my self a few years back, I produced a book from my touring pictures using an on-line service which would be pretty easy to create one for members photo's.
I'd still be happy to do it if there was any interest but obviously would need the best resolution pictures to make it good quality and a bit of info on the person and/or alembic instrument.
lemme know.
Jazzyvee

Hell yeah go ahead wit it Jazzy!

This is what happens when you subscribe threads on the email... no pics= little info. I haven't noticed, until I came to the page to check the sticker everyone's talking about (and of which I'd like me one as well), Kimberly's rig!!!!! I'm WAY more curious now! So, Kimberly... Left handed, 6 strings Epic (+1 for us Epic caretakers), strung upside-down a-la Haslip, AND a Roland GK system? Is this a solo gig, as it seems to me from one of the pics? What do you use off-board? Please do tell!

Go to YouTube & search Kimberly Lynn, Juan Carlos - and be prepared to be blown away!

Oh my, and so I did... and I'm still wiping my tears!. Blown away I was, indeed. She's great!!!!!!!!

Hi Kimberley, a question if I may. Is it possible to slap and pop on bass if you play bass with the lowest string closest to the floor?
I can't imagine that being an easy thing to do.
Jazzyvee
-
Jazzyvee; this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyl8TFodb3U) shows a bit of her technique. If you watch all the way through you'll see a variety of really cool left hand techniques.
-
Wow !
Thanks Dave for bringing this clip to our attention. It will never cease to amaze me how our forum member with the highest smiley density in posts can play the bass. Obviously, I shall convert my basses to upside-down, it looks sooo much easier now where to find a nut and a bridge ?
cheers and all the best in 2013,
Christian
-
I Love watching Kimberley play the upside down 6 string, she makes it look so effortless. I have a soft spot for watching and learning from amazing people who overcome come what some might think as a disability and create Magic!
-
OMG - Kimberley!
That was some greasy, funky stank! (that's the good kind!)
Marcus who? :-D
I am sure it has been posted somewhere before - but - What does she use for looping?
-
Paul; I imagine that she's still using her . That picture is from May, 2010; so her setup may be different now.
-
Here are a couple of silly pictures from a New Years Eve gig I did with a great guitar player named Scott Law a couple of years back. Kooky! (hopefully I haven't posted them before)

Two Alembics! Right on! (Scott's playing his custom Further Owl - COTM 2006).
Bill, tgo
-
Dave - thanks for the reply.
Keith - it looks like Scott and yourself have far exceeded the fun factor! :-D
-
That must be so rare to get more than one alembic on a gig!
Jazzyvee
-
I love Scott! I've gotten to do a couple shows where our bands shared the bill and he sat in with us. Great player.
The top on that shorty is just stunning!
I miss my SI already, but I'm really glad it's in Pierre-Yves hands. I need to find my dream medium scale.

Wow even the bass has aged gracefully too. :-)
When I have owned an alembic for 30yrs I will post a now and then picture too. I've only got 20 years to go :-)

Hey Rusty,
I see your gigs are supervised by Gumby & Pokey. I always have my Dead Bear, Scarlet Begonias overseeing my musical endeavors...

Jazzyvee, Alembics get better with age, unfortunately, I do not!
-
Love the bear Mike! I saw the Gumby & Pokey in the checkout line at Fry's & had to have them! I used to love them when I was a kid! I put them on my amp to prove to my bandmates that I am, in fact, NOT playing too loud or Gumby would fall flat on his face! LOL!

Echoes of the Blues Brothers. Drank more than what we got paid.

Interesting straight bar bridge. I can't say I've noticed that on an alembic before. is it original?

The bar bridge is original. I recently replaced the tailpiece from a brass/timber to a solid brass. Long scale 34 no battery compartment.

Oooh, drinking while fretless! Living on the edge!

Hi Guys!
Mild hijack under the guise of catching up. ;)
Delano, long story over many years with my 'slap technique'. Honestly the simple mechanics of having the 'primary slap strings' being B,E,A on the bottom in itself requires reaching over the top of the D,G,C strings to reach them. At the same time from having my thumb on the top of my left hand (and missing half of it from the joint out) and my picking fingers on the bottom, (I hope that makes sense). This required me to develop a 'quasi' slap method that had me 'flailing around' for many years trying to emulate slap bass. And it's still a work in process, as is my music overall, but it's starting to work finally! True slap? Naaahhh...not even close. Effective for what I do? Works for me for now til I learn something else.
Christian, Peter, Paul, glad you guys like! I appreciate the compliments!
Dave, thanks for the 'tech support'!
Yep, I'm still using my RC-50 looper. The pedal board has changed some. New format with road cases. Signal chain starts going into a splitter, which one line goes direct to the mixer, one goes to a ME-50B. Stereo out, going to an Eventide PitchFactor. Stereo out going to an Adrenalinn III. Stereo out going to the looper. Of course this signal path arrangement does have a tendency to change and I'll end up with cables going all over everywhere with way too many line signals running around. Then I'll start all over again. :D
Guess that's it so, back to the regularly scheduled programming. ;)
Thanks Guys!
Best Regards,
Kimberly

Now that is a cool pose with a super cool bass.
I'm a closet Exploiter bass fan but i think it would have too much stage presence for the jazz funk type of gigs I do but I guess it would be kind of cool in a reggae band. :-)
Anyone got a picture of a Dragon's wing bass in a gig situation?
Jazzyvee
-
I can say the same, I find Exploiter bodyshape very captivating, but can't imagine myself getting into one of my samba gigs with one in hand since they still think bass just as Precisions only. P-Basses sounds great, but they are simply not me...

Me again...
Here's some more with a bit of color/colour! Should anyone wonder why I'm sitting down in some photos... I have a serious case of rheumatoid arthritis in my upper spine/neck (getting old is so much fun... not!) and have to sit once and awhile. Ol' number 7 is pretty heavy! Photos by my friend Jamie Compton
-
I hear you, Dean! I was just diagnosed with arthritis in my hips. A perfect complement to being a new parent. Still, it beats the alternative.
I'm loving all these shots. Some basses I've never seen and some old friends. I'm also loving the fact that Alembic instruments travel from honky tonks to the most upscale of establishments.
Slawie, what's the serial number on that straight bar bridged bass? It looks like it might have originally had caramel pickups. I'm wondering if it might have been the original home of the pickups in my Starfire.
-
Thanks Edwin!
-
Hey Edwin,
The serial number is 75-251S
As far as I know the pick ups are original
They are the single screw types with the round connectors
slawie
-
Ah, mine are older than that, I think. They are also single screw and are trapezoidal inside the rectangular shell. The connectors are RCA.
-
Played on the worlds smallest stage on Saturday night. Two hour set, sat on a stool with my speaker box massaging my left kidney!

Awesome pics!
3 Alembics in the picture:
(and a tower from Petaluma)
-
FC, do you play specific alembics for particular songs or do you play whatever you feel like at the time?
Jazzyvee
-
The '88 Spoiler is tuned one step below the low strings of a five string (ADGC) I use it for two songs: Sad but true and Whiskey in the jar.
The Elan 5 is used on songs I play with a pick ('88 and up Metallica songs)
The '83 Spoiler on older 'tallica tunes songs played with the fingers (AXY = best thumbrest ever) and to keep the show going for some songs played with a pick.
-
I've got to reiterate once again that I think it's so awesome that Alembics can cover so much musical territory and sound so different doing it.
BTW, I checked your site, fcbass and it gave me a Spinal Tap moment with a page none more black and none of the apparent promised info on effects and amps.
-
Taken at a gig with Elizabeth Fields Collective at the Jam House in Birmingham at the beginning of the month. The bass is my bocate Europa 5.
Wearing a suit on a gig is not my style really but that was what the band wanted. :-)

Best to stick with Bill tgo
-
Well, Bill can be my solicitor, but I need a barrister with some boom!
Matt, very nice bass! I love those early ones.
-
Does that mean I gotta wear one of them white curly wigs?
hehehehe
Bill, tgo
-
Nope, that's the barrister's job. Solicitors are behind the scenes. I figure the dreads got the wig function covered. I like the idea of someone with jazzy's hair representing me as it conveys a sense of my self-perception from back when I had serious hair.

Matt!
Do you have more pictures of your vintage series I in the Showcase section?
Would love to see more of that one.
-
What are all those switches, mnewman?
-
Going by the obvious age of Matt's bass, I'd guess he has p/up selector, vol X2, Filter X2, Q switch X2, and p/up trimpot X2, Mario; on the really early ones the trims were front-mounted instead of in the cavity.
Peter
-
Pauldo: There are more pics in the showcase section. Two places actually, one from the previous owner, Michael Delacerda and myself.
-
Mario: Cozmik is right about the layout.Everything is on the face of this bass including the battery compartment between the two pick-ups. This bass is medium scale at 32''and weighs in around 9 pounds.

It's from the lighting. Pretty cool!
-
On a striking looking bass like that, a backlit spiders web would be pretty neat.
Jazzyvee

My first gig with my amazing Europa. It has an amazing sound and it's really fun to play. We had a great time.

Someone else playing my Alembic:
We had some fun tonight :-) The singer/guitarplayer and I (Bass) switched places and did a Motorhead/Sepultura coversong (Orgasmatron) Symen played my '83 Spoiler and I played my Squier Strat with an Alembic 4 string Jazz pickup. The humbucker I had in there was pretty bad and microphonic, with the Alembic pickup through a Tubescreamer into a Mesa combo I had a great sound :-) The Strat with Alembic pickup:
(I had no long/slim screws, so I used a kinda rude mounting system) :-) Sorry Bill (tgo) this one isn't for sale
-
Flip-
I dig that guitar, pain and grief radiate from it both literally and figuratively.
It's a piece of art without even hearing it.
-
Does that alembic pickup go straight to the output jack or is there a stratoblaster or any other electronics between?
Jazzyvee
-
Thanx!
The pickup goes straight to the output, I had to use the Tubescreamer (set at 11) to get enough signal for the Boogie to rumble :-)
-
Frankenstrat!
-
Ouch, it is almost like I could feel guitar's pain...
Flip, this long way to the pedal didn't built up the noise?
(Message edited by mario farufyno on April 08, 2013)

Looking at that guitar is like watching someone get hit in the family jewels. It hurts to even think about it! Now if you could get Eddie Van Halen to play it, Fender would put out an exact copy for $25K! lol
Bill, tgo
-
Yep then he could hire you go make sure he gets his due royalties.
Jazzyvee
-
I loved the mounting system of this PU... Looks like it has a spring on a hinge at the upper side. The screws can add mass, do they increase sustain? lol...
-
Lol all :-)
Here's the vid (very poor sound) qlique (http://youtu.be/KC7zgEJyv-s target=_blank)
I will upload a new version when I get a better quality recording (video camera from behind the foh desk)
If the link is broken, search for Damaged Justice NL Orgasmatron
Noise level was somewhat acceptable... I might try it with a preamp if we're going to do such a crazy thing again :-)
Ooops... did I warn you to turn off sound before clicking on the vid link?
-
It is not fair, that guitar plays by itself!
*(watch at the end... lol)
-
And Charlie Watts is your drummer??!!!!!
Bill, tgo
-
Watts on steroids! :-)
That's a Sepultura thingy, see here (http://youtu.be/guwkHprgXhA?t=3m13s target=_blank) (also some Alembic action in vid, Paulo jr. played a Spoiler 4 and an Essence 5)
-
A long long time ago, in a much skinnier and hairier galaxy... 1979.
closeup of the bass -
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/394/157800.jpg)
-
Nice shot! What are the extra switches on the bass?
-
Electronics on this (and its fretless sibling) are one superfilter channel, one series filter w/cvq, with a bunch of switches that let me switch high/band/low for the SF, filter in/out for the series filter, and let me put the two filters in series, plus mono/stereo switch.
-
Nice bass Mark. reminds me of Joe Bouchard's (of BOC fame). Always liked those batwing inlays.

this Bass has some serious guts, indeed...

A guitar based photo to even things up a bit. This is the Dragon Magic, former custom of the month. I used it for a documentary film about Musical Youth in a rehearsal studio. Seemed a pretty good idea.
It hasn't seen much action recently as I've been concentrating on the bass side of my playing. That's gonna switch again soon I can feel it.

Flip, is this Wha a Bass Wha or Guitar model? I'm increasingly unsatisfied with my Dunlop Cry-Baby Bass Wha since it chops off my Rogue's highs and I'm considering substitute it with a Guitar Wha... Sorry for hijack, guys, but does anybody has any advice?
-
My favorite bass wah is the old Morley Chrome Power Wah. It had the widest sweep I've ever heard. I've got one that goes between wh and volume and works great.

Wolf: Alembic & Mesa, always a good choice! :-)
Mario: It's an old Morley Power wah fuzz (from 1975)
Original for guitar I think, but with an extreme wide sweep.
I only use it for wah/fuzz sounds (with a Big Muff), see here (http://youtu.be/sTeOIkOvq7s target=_blank)
I never tried it with normal bass sounds though...
I'll see if I can try it in the next couple of days, I'm sure you won't miss highs with this pedal :-)
If you want one of these old ones and don't need the fuzz, best would be to get the Power Wah (PWO)
They are a lot cheaper, have the same Wah sound and you can switch between Wah/volume pedal mode.
-
I have one of those:
You are correct - the sweep is very wide and smooth and the fuzz is vicious. Sounds WAAYYYYY better for bass than guitar, IMO.
I'd use it more, but it sucks tone when in bypass mode - any suggestions?
Sorry for hijack.
-
George ,
Thanks ! That's my bubinga series I medium scale 81-1940 .
Flip, Yes ! I have the old Mesa Road Ready cabs with 10 EV's . I have one more 2x10 that's not in the picture.
-
I use an RMC wah by Geoffrey Teese. Love it. You can see all of his wahs here (http://www.realmccoycustom.com/).
Bill, tgo
-
I have the exact same Mesa 2x10 as Sonicus Also have a 2x15 EV Diesel. What I have not... is a couple guys to help me move it around As I heard Diana Ross once say... This mother 's heavyyyyyyy.
-
Jazzyvee, that is a gorgeous guitar! The wood looks like it is on fire!
Rusty
-
I never noticed that effect before but I can see what you mean. Maybe it represents the dragon emerging from the fire. :-)
Certainly no fire coming from my fingertips :-)
Jazzyvee
-
I used to own a Morley Power Wah. Not only did it have a good fuzz but it was a good volume pedal. I regret selling it to a lead guitarist I used to play with.
Keith
-
It does look like the dragon is coming out of the fire! Maybe it's Smaug coming out of The Lonely Mountain!
-
Wild! Thanks, Flip, it is always great to know fuzzes that work good with active electronics, too. Have to check those Morley, probably the Power Wha, and the McCoy Bill is using (RMC3 looks really interesting).
Flip, I also have this tonekilling issue on the Dunlop, so I pass it trough a Boss LS-2 line selector as a main bypass.

Great shot Jazzyvee!
-
So, how's the Series working out for you on stage? Sure looks good!
-
I've only done one full 2 hour gig with it so far so it's still a work in progress as I still need to be able to move the controls instinctively from one type of sound to another and know it's there before starting to play as it's not easy to tweak between notes on a busy bass line.
It really does look great, I love it. I actually play it more at home than I do my SII bass.
We are doing some big festivals this year, Camp Bestival and, The Isle of Wight Bestival so I may take one of the series basses there. 10's of thousands turn up at the Bestival I'm told..... Cool

Yesterday I uploaded onto youtube a video of a gig in 2003 which was the year I started doing gigs on bass. This was the first session I did with a singer called Gregory Peck.
I was using a Mesa boogie walkabout head and a Mesa boogie 2x10 powerhouse cab. Sound isn't great and you can hear the compressor in the video camera working hard.

Rob, no we never did. I am guessing you listened to the myspace page. It is all quite old and the best things there, IMHO, are Cassidy and Dire Wolf. I'll have to post something newer in the future. I thank you for taking the time to listen... Rob, I just looked at your profile, we can't be more then a mile apart, likely closer. I thought I was the only Alembic player it town.
-
Yeah, Kenn. We probably are less than a mile apart. I'm sure we have many mutual musical acquaintances, too. My daughter used to work at Perry's in Narragansett when she was in college. She turned me on to Violin River, and gave me your business card. I guess she was friendly with the singer and her husband. It's a small world. Anyway, I've been a big fan ever since!

Bill,
The sound system belongs to the guitarist and I didn't get a good look at it. No time this was a surprise party and we barely had time to get a song list together.
Both gigs were completely different 1 with long sustained notes and tones and the other freewheeling fun. Each rewarding in themselves.
Peace,

Here are some video's shot with phone's and small digital camera's from that gig last week. We fumbled a few changes from lack of rehearsal but overall the band sounded great and the audience loved it.

Love the top on that one Jazzy.
What size is that B string?
It looks massive.
-
The B-string as .130 though the bass had .128 when I got it from Alembic so it's not that big. :-)
-
My first thought was... WOW ! That top MUST be 3D ! And second, after reading Paul's post: finally, I have seen a bass strung B-A-D-G-C
cheers, Christian

looking good Rusty. It's cool that you got the cable to match :-)

-
My first gig with my Europa was great! This bass is incredible! It is full & punchy & has great attack. You can hear & feel every note! It plays like a dream too. My fingers were not nearly as sore at the end of the night as they usually are on my SCSD.
Simon, I am definitely contented with this bass! I've waited all my life to have a bass like this!
Graeme, I made the cable myself because I wanted a short cable for small venues. Where this picture was taken I'm never more than 5 feet away from my amp so the 20 foot cable that it came with is overkill. So I got some great advice from Jimmy Johnson & Keith Humphrey on what connectors & cable to use. Keith suggested this Canare L-4E6S cable which comes in many colors & is smaller in diameter than the Alembic cable so it is very flexible.

Edwin, I can see how that reads now.... I meant it was the last time I took it out on a gig. I probably should have said it was the most recent gig I did with the bass. She's a keeper. If you ever see it up for sale you know it's been stolen so call the cops. :-)

This bass has come a long way to do a gig tonight. Monday it was in Australia, Friday it's on a gig in the UK. The sound of this bass is nothing short of incredible. I can hear why Stanley loves them. it has a certain sweetness of tone that the 34 inch scales don't have. Incidentally how cool is it to do your first straight ahead jazz gig on an alembic...!!!!

This bass has come a long way to do a gig tonight. Monday it was in Australia, Friday it's on a gig in the UK depping on bass for a band called 'From Scratch who play calypso infused Jazz.
I have to say though, sound of this bass is nothing short of incredible. I can hear why Stanley & Pierre-Yves love them. A series shortie has a certain sweetness of tone that the 34 inch scales don't have. Incidentally this was my first ever full straight ahead jazz gig and how cool do it on a series alembic. It's earned it's place on next weeks jazz funk gig. I have a couple of clarkee tracks in the set list so that will be perfect.

Nice basses, that's quite the wall of sound you have there!
-
Thank You. The Basses are the Best there are. Obviously! The Wall of sound can actually be bigger. Didn't need anymore for this event. But the sound is incredible!!! I designed and built the 1X15 cabinets and replaced all the drivers in the Eden 4X10 cabinets. Used all Beyma Drivers. Best sounding Rig I ever heard!!! Took me a while to build one capable of reproducing the full range of an Alembic Bass. This system does it great. Full 20-20KHZ response. And with all that power it is incredibly clear. Can be expanded with more cabinets and up to 15000 Watts! Haven't needed to do that yet though. This set up does the Job!!!
-
The guitarist in my new band looked a bit shocked when I told him my fender pre / QSC power set up could run at 2400 watts. I reckon his head would explode if I turned up with your rig Willie. :-)

This system scares everybody when they first see it. They think it's all about volume and that I'll overpower everyone. They don't understand that it is about TONE! And they don't understand why a Bass needs a Rig with such a wide frequency response. But they don't understand the capabilities of an Alembic Bass and what it takes to faithfully reproduce it's sound until they hear it. But Yes, of course I can get that tone at a very high volume level and still be crystal clear. The 10 Mid Bass drivers and Super Tweeters Really helped with the mid's and highs being so clear. The 15G40 15 Absolutely Thunders down to the lowest notes of my 5 string! And all of that POWER Makes Really Helps Too

Wow...I show up at a gig with 1 AccuGroove El Whappo and everyone panics.
-
I take a different approach to bass than most. I use Sony MDR-7506 headphones for everything, and you should too. But you won't know why - I mean really have the lightbulb appear above your head - until you do it yourself.
No amount of my yammering can possibly convey what listening to your own rig through flat-response headphones can teach you in thirty seconds.
And that's just the first part. The second - and most important - part is to listen to your rig with drums, at full roar from across the room! Again, you won't really get it until you do it yourself. The reason is because drums do all sorts of weird *trump to your bass tone and unless you're hip to it you won't even know about it until you're halfway through the first song.
Drums soak up all kinds of lows and mids, and I'll make a flat-out prediction here that your drummer doesn't own a tuner (if they do, buy them gifts. Talk nicely to them. That's a unicorn drummer, and they're far and few between).
If the floor tom and bass drum(s) are out of tune with each other by even a few cents (much less, tuned to whatever tuning your drummer thought sounded spiffy in his basement) there goes your carefully-crafted 250-500 punch.
You can throw as much wattage as you want at it, but it'll still sound flabby, like someone beating a headboard against the wall in the next room at a cheap hotel (I've actually experienced this way too many times on tour). Buy your drummer a $15 tuner and have him pick a key (G is popular) and your life will improve immeasurably.
The reason you want to hear your rig from across the room (don't you love wireless?) with a drummer bashing away is simply because we don't have ears in our knees. Standing in front of a bass amp (or worse, beside it) is the absolute worst place in the room to hear your bass. Sound waves from low notes are fifty feet long.
Low frequencies are omnidirectional (which is why you can hide the woofer from your home entertainment setup behind the couch) and denote power, and higher frequencies are directional, and denote definition.
I used a minimoog for decades (mostly for Dreamweaver, ha ha) and discovered that calling up a saw toothed wave and lopping the top off gives you a colorless bassoon-like tone, but adding high frequencies back gives you everything from a piercing solo violin screech to a mellow oboe sound, and everything in between.
The more you fiddle with those upper harmonics and partials, the more it defines the characteristics of vastly different instruments. It's the same thing with digital modeling, because that's what they sampled in the first place! (All synthesis comes down to basically four waveforms.)
It's the same balancing act with electric bass with drums, whether you're aware of it or not. (They don't call you a rhythm section for nothin', stud.) Its all about the sound of the ensemble, and the nice thing is that when you get your power dialed in with the drums, your sound is defined by what you do with the upper harmonics.
*my new word for the same old ... well, you know.
-
Steve, I'm with you! I'll take my 58 pound El Whappo over any rig on the planet! I can't imagine anything sounding better!
-
I actually use very expensive flat response headphones most of the time when I play at home. I don't even turn on any power amps. Can't. I live in an apartment. So I know the sound through headphones. And although for noise and interference problems I prefer to use a cord when playing live I have used my wireless system to stand next to the soundman while he set my sound because I didn't want him trying to make my Alembic sound like a Fender Precision Bass. Which is all a lot of them know. With all that said. There is nothing like feeling the power of that Rig hitting you in the back and feeling the stage shake and your pant legs moving from the air moving. Headphones can't do that! To each his own. Most concert stages are clear of Backline amplification anyway nowadays with everyone using in ear monitors. But I like to Feel the Bass as well as hear it! I have seen some other people say that a good tube pre amp with a high powered PA style amp is a different sound compared to any combo or Hybrid setup. I totally agree. And I have certainly had enough people ,(Guitar Players), complain when they see a large Bass Rig. Tried explaining about sound reproduction. I'm tired of that argument!
-
Rustyg61...I play an Orion 6,an Epic 5, and a cool Mexi-Jazz through an original SWR 750 through originally an AccuGroove Tri210XL, and now an El Whappo. The amp is set dead flat and that's it. Pure tonal madness. Mark Wright is a bloody genius.
-
Rustyg61...we need to let Alembic players know about AccuGroove, especially the El Whappo. Mark Wright has solved the bass cabinet issue.
Apologies for the double post.

Steve, I totally agree with you about the El Whappos! Mark Wright is to speakers cabinets as Ron Wickersham is to basses & guitars! I often tell people that AccuGroove is the Alembic of speaker cabinets! I also have a Wedgie & use it for most gigs. It is more than adequate to keep up with the 2 guitars & acoustic drums in my classic rock band. I use the El Whappo for large venues or outdoors, but at only 58 pounds I could easily use it at every gig. I take every opportunity to sing the praises of both Alembic & AccuGroove, they are truly a match made in Heaven!
-
I thought this thread was about pictures of people playing their Basses. Seems to have gone off into Bass cabinet preferences. I know about the El Whappo. I didn't build my system blind. I've been studying speaker cabinet design and sound reproduction for years. I have another cabinet that is a 3 way isolated cabinet. Although because of the magnets it is heavier than the El Whappo and is 3 way. Not 4 way. I don't use compression horns. I don't use 10 woofers. My system may weigh more. But I'll put it up against anything out there. It is a 3 way system. With the different frequency ranges separately compressed, amplified and then reproduced by the correct driver for that frequency range. I'm sure I would love the sound of the El Whappo. It is the sound I was trying to create. I just did it on a large scale. And I prefer conventional magnets to Neo's. They may weigh less. But I wasn't going for light weight. I was going for TONE!!! I'll post a picture of my 3 way isolated cabinet that I designed and built with my brother. He is a master carpenter. Anyone have any pictures of themselves playing their Basses?
-
Yeah things have gone astray a little but still interesting to read. Anyway, here is a thread re-alighment picture... :-)
This was taken at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham at the annual ArtsFest in 2010.
That bass hasn't seen much stage action in recent years, and hopefully next year that will change.

ed_zep wrote: I take a different approach to bass than most.
N00b here, sorta wandered in by accident.
I remember ed_zep from another forum. He gave me some good advice - just wanted to say Hi.
-
Willie, AccuGroove uses 2 soft dome tweeters, not compression horns. The highs are much smoother than my Eden cabinets.
Jazzyvee, great to see you playing the Stanley! I'm used to seeing you with one of your Europas, so this is a nice picture indeed!
-
Very nice bass Jazzy, definitely get that in the mix! Cool photo!
-
That's why I took the compression horns out of my Eden cabinets. The Beyma super tweeters I use have much smoother highs. And better frequency response. The horns only went to 14Khz. The tweeters I use go all the way to 20Khz. I also replaced the 10 Eminence Woofers with Beyma 10 Mid Bass Drivers. The Mids are so much clearer now. I designed The 15 cabinets internal volume and venting size to match the resonant frequency of the drivers. The Beyma 15G40 Drivers blow away the JBL E140 and E145 Drivers I used before. Pure Clear Thunder! And I love JBL. End result. A very HiFi sounding Bass Rig capable of extreme SPL! I was going for the same result as they were when they designed the El Whappo. A clear sounding system that could accurately reproduce he full dynamic and frequency range of my Alembic Basses. It is so nice to be able to hear them so clear. And Powerful! System response is 25-20Khz! SPL level? Never got to push it that hard to find out. But it's definitely up there.
Nice picture Jazzyvee. Good to get thread back to pictures. Beautiful Bass. Definitely start using that Bass more. Although you do have some other ones that are incredible! You seem to like the Europa Body shape like I do. Love your Quilted Maple 5 String. My 5 String Custom Europa is the best sounding 5 string I ever heard. Especially through my Rig! OMG!!!!
-
Yeah Willie the Europa's are my fave for 5 string basses. For 4 strings I prefer short scale then the Elan for a 34.
Like you my 5 string SII europa is an amazing sounding 5 string bass, something I've been told after virtually every gig I've done with it.
If these El Whappo's appear this side of the pond I will check them out.

Rusty, my favorite thing about that picture is that you dressed to match your bass. And you did it to perfection.
I'm such a nut about Monet that I have piles of books (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_0?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A283155%2Cn%3A5271%2Ck%3AMonet+gardens&keywords=Monet+gardens&ie=UTF8&qid=1450022564&rnid=1000) about his garden (http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Monet%27s+Garden&FORM=RESTAB) and I try to recreate his themes in our garden and then paint 'em (I call my style Depressionist). You are a monochromatic masterpiece. Every time I look at your Alembic, it looks like it was just lifted out of Monet's Japanese water garden:
Hell, I don't care if you can play a note. I'd hire you just to stand there with that bass. Give the act a much-needed touch of class.

Is it me or does just about everyone on this forum have a bass lust crush on Jazzy's Europa? I know I certainly do...
-
Jazzyvee's Europa was the one that inspired me to get mine!
-
Thanks alembikoa, I had a big lust crush on that bass for a number of years and the previous owner, poor_nigel, knew this and thankfully decided I should be the next owner. He is understandably very particular about where his superb instruments go to when they leave him so I was particularly honoured to be chosen to be the next (and hopefully the last) owner of this bass.
I'm not sure if the previous owners gigged with it at all but I doubt it was used much as it was spotless when I got it and it still is and I use it to practice with all the time.
Here is a picture of it in California accompanied by some of it's siblings.

Magnificent. Sure love the Europa.
-
The original owner of the Almost Twins Europa series II basses never played them, according to his son. I, and I am sure Thomas, was able to register my Twin with Alembic as a new bass. Here's the 4-string, for those who prefer an even number of strings.

Graeme
-
Thanks Graeme! Just having fun! That's actually my light rig Ampeg SVT 7pro. My big rig is a SVT 4pro that I use at bigger venues if they don't have a good PA. I bi-amp it and run 2x18 Subs on the bottom and two 4x10 neo's for mids and highs. The best and worst decision I ever made in music was buying my first Alembic bass. The best because they are the best sounding and looking basses that I have ever seen or heard. I have yet to hear a sound system that can make them sound bad. Now for the bad, once you buy your first one, you get hooked and want/need another and another and well you get the picture!
-
Your big rig sounds like something I would love to try. I'm sure I've seen Stanley Clarke with something similar on a concert over here. Two SWR Big Ben cabs, two 4x10 cabs and a guitar amp. It must sound incredible even when not up loud.
-
Jazzy you are correct, it is probably even better not loud, because bass being omni-directional gets lost the farther you get away from the speakers especially the real low notes. That's because it's hard to move the air in the back of a room. That's why a bass has to have three or 4 times the power, and much more speaker surface than a guitar, which is directional and cuts through without having to move the air. When you go to a concert at a very large venue, they always have literally a wall of woofers and thousands of watts driving them to the point that the building shakes so that the bass is heard and felt (you can feel bass that you can't hear) throughout the venue. With that said that's where the 18's come in, they move air at high or low volume and at low volume if you don't have enough speaker surface the low notes will fall off pretty quickly.
I had a chance to see Stanley last year at a venue with a real high ceiling that seats 1600, and he had a rig similar to what you described. He was able to fill that venue with bass without playing loud. He does use two different amps for bass guitar and acoustic. He uses an Ampeg SVT 4pro (bi-amp) for splitting his high and low pickups on his guitars, and a SVT 2pro for his acoustic bass. The little fender amp covers the high frequencies on his tenor and piccolo basses. I've rambled enough, but in my opinion for what it?s worth an 18 or 15? with 4x10 is a great combination to cover the full spectrum of frequencies that you can get with an Alembic bass. BTW my SVT 4pro is in a rolling rack case because they are pretty heavy.

Recent outing with Memphis Bluesman Darren Jay, with my recently upgraded and shielded 1977 Series I (.5)
-
Nice, Tom. What was the upgrade you had done?
Rob
-
Hi Rob,
When I had the shielding upgrade done, as long as Ron was under the hood, I had the Q switches swapped out for continuously variable Q potentiometers.
Between the new pickups, the variable Qs, and the fact that I don't have to think about electronic noise based on which venue I am playing, it's really a completely different and revitalized bass. While it sounded excellent before, it had a much more limited (or maybe targeted is a better term) tone palette. Now it covers all that ground and much more.
-
Hi Tom,
Thanks for the feedback and congrats on the new configuration. I've been thinking of doing a similar thing to one of my basses, I just keep hearing good things about the tonal flexibility with the CVQ switches. I might just end up making the change. Enjoy!

Thanks Rusty... yeah, I love the looks of that bass almost as much as I enjoy playing it. Just wait 'til you see the next one though... I'm told it's quite fetching. Shouldn't be too much longer. =)

Dang Gregory,
is there a showcase thread for that beauty? If not could you make one ;D

and +1 on the TI strings... I love 'em on my Alembics too.

Thanks for the compliments! I'm really enjoying playing my Series more often these days. The strap is actually an Italia. I've never tried a Minotaur, but I hear great things about them.

Been a while (4 years) since I have posted in this thread. So here goes. This is actually from a couple years ago. We were doing the pre-show party for Monster Truck Jam at Ford Field in Detroit.

This is not a very good picture, but it is one of the rare photos taken with 87 4431. Stanley's old bass. It was at a benefit concert held at the Majestic (or Magic Stick, it doubled as a pool hall) in Detroit. My younger son Justin also played the same bass that night. Then he met Stanley after one of Stanley's concerts at the same venue. He was able to tell Stanley that he had played one of his basses on the same stage before Stanley did. I, unfortunately, was on a plane to Geneva at the time of the concert.

It was a new guitar night last night in the house band. I was sporting my new Series I and the guitarist was sporting his new gretsch.

I haven't used my Alembic bass in quite a while, as my wife, Sheila has "taken over" the bass chair. But this Tribute prototype gets lots of use... Here is a link to a vid on youtube. The guitar on the left is a Knaggs, the bass is a Birdsong, and on the right is the Blue Steel Tribute.
The tune is a romp about the absurdity of purchasing a wife via mail order, juxtaposed with the eruption of the Pompeii volcano. (Why ask why?)
-
If someone ever wondered if an Alembic can fit in a speed metal band, the answer is yes! ;D
-
Daniel,
That's the beauty of Alembics . . . they can fit in any genre!
Is that a GK800RB bi-amped in to your Hartke stack?
-
I would think that they'd be perfect in a speed metal band.
-
Daniel,

I never would have imagined how maleable it would be. Just the other night went from playing Marvin Gaye to Iron Maiden without needing to touch my amp.
Oh how I wish it was. That one is a brazilian copy of the GK400RB, and not bi-amped, it just happens to have two 4 ohms outs. I am actually looking for a nice deal on a used GK800RB.
-
I would think that they'd be perfect in a speed metal band.
And you sir, would be absolutely right! ;D
-
Too bad you are in Brazil. I am in a tight financial situation and rarely have a gig that requires my 800RB. She is collecting dust with my Mesa 1x15 and Hartke 2x10. . . :'(
Pretty much rely on my Carvin MB15 for shows these days, plenty of volume for what I am doing and on occasion I will couple the Mesa cab with it and get a little more air moving. For the right price I would let her go, hate to think what shipping to Brazil would cost.

Too bad indeed since this copy has been proven a bit unreliable, and the extra headroom from the 800 would be great for me, pity they are waaay overpriced around here. I hope your financial situation improves without you havint to part ways with your gear. Cheers

Recent pic of me playing my 5-string Europa "Royale" for an late afternoon - early evening outdoor event at a private country club north of Phoenix.
It was win/win that night: if the music wasn't cuttin' it, those in attendance could still enjoy the view - which is breathtaking from the patio where we played.
There is absolutely nothing like a mid-April evening in AZ - the desert is in bloom, there's usually a slight breeze and, at least that night, there was a full moon.
All of that, coupled with Alembic tone and playability made for an exceptional playing experience - I even got to use the side LED's after the sun went down!
All gigs should be like that.
-
Man, that's nice! :)
Was "Royale" the first Alembic to have a maple fingerboard?
-
Hi everybody,
I've been fairly busy gigging recently, here are some snaps with my series 1!
I've also got a new youtube video out, I hope you enjoy it! It's with this series 1! It's a bass cover of Bali Run by Fourplay!

Hi edwardofhuncote, This is the other one Iv'e seen with a maple board (http://alembic.com/info/fc_blanca.html)
-
Ah, "Blanca"... yes, I remember that one now. :)
"On Alembic basses and guitars, there are only a handful of examples, perhaps a dozen, with Maple fingerboards. This of course may change in the future, but for now it's a rare bird indeed."
I knew there weren't many. ;)
Nice pics, George. I should really get someone to take some action-pics of me and my Alembics sometime... trouble is, they look pretty much just like the still-shots. ;D
-
Re: maple fingerboard - no "Royale" was not the first, "Blanca" preceded her and was partially her inspiration. However, "Royale" may be the first Europa model with a maple board.
Her unique bright ringing tone and the simplicity of the Europa electronics are perfect for multitasking between rock, pop, funk, country and disco (all of which we played that night). I spec'd a Fat Boy for the bridge PU, a comfort-taper neck profile and gold-plated hardware. Other than those things (and the maple board), she's a straight Europa model.
-
Well...here's my latest pic, participating on an Music/Art project running while the world's biggest Exhibition of modern art (so called "documenta") takes place in my home town Kassel, Germany. Sounds recorded in a factory are mixed with a brass section, a Greek Bouzoki, a Saz from Turkey, an electric guitar and of course the Spyder!

Here are some you tube clips from that gig some on mobile and some using my Canon 5D slr so the quality varies.

Not a great shot of the bass ('86 Distillate), but look at all those subs under the stage! ;D I'm there again tomorrow night (5/25/17) with my band Nomadic. Martyrs' in Chicago.
-
Here is a rare pic of me in a bow tie and my Orion guitar
Those of you with a keen eye will recognise the MK balance K bass that used to belong to Pierre-Yves and now to Martin, the bass player in the band.
A rare moment indeed for a band over here in the UK to have two alembics on stage at the same time.

Very nice!
I was confused because I recall you played fretless and fretted Essence 5's (as I do). I assume the Elan 5 w/ Signature is a new-ish acquisition? It sounds really round and warm in this clip - perfect for the material. I've always felt that MarkBass and Alembics are a good pairing. Sounds great!
-
There is a lot of versatility in the Signature package. I often go back and forth over which I like more - that or the Rogue electronics.
I've actually had the Elan the longest, and it gets the most stage time for me. It came to me "well loved" and I don't worry about it getting bumped or dinged as much as I do my Essences. That first cut is always the deepest!
I usually have both filters wide open, or close to it, with the pan leaning a bit to the front pickup. I also use a Yamaha NE-1 parametric EQ, which really warms up the tone.
-
One more that someone just posted today - the bass comes through a bit better in this one:
-
NICE!!!
The whole band seems more relaxed in the second video. Why ain't no one dancin'?

This was from the free phil lesh/bob weir duo after party show at Reggie's Live (https://www.reggieslive.com/show/trouble-ahead/)that we played
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/798/40911698111_c0aa501ece.jpg)
Fun show. I'm tucked away in the back, in the dark. House rig was a bit of a mud-fest. There's video of one song, and the video actually pulses in time with the kick drum. Apparently they like to run the subs very loud at Reggie's. I was glad to have such an even-playing, stable instrument (my Essence 5)
-
Looks like fun.
-
A couple action shots of me and "Chain-Links" on the job... one from a recent audition show with Harwell-Grice Band, and one with New River Bound at a called contra-dance last Fall. Finally, one from soundcheck last Saturday.
-
Wow, that bass is really something gorgeous, Edward!

Nice Essence.
-
Thank you David! I'm fond of it as well!
-
Me and my first Alembic; a (restored) Persuader 5-string, on a wedding gig last night. Next month marks our fourth year together... without exaggeration, playing this bass has been a life-changing experience. Yeah, it sounds crazy... until you try it.
-
... playing this bass has been a life-changing experience ...
My first Alembic was as well. So was my first Series bass. And so was Karma, exponentially so; as it continues to be.
-
Me with my SJ, playing a big band gig. Not a brilliant picture of the bass, except you can see its sandwich-ness.
r.
-
Apparently, the guy on the bottom right of the picture can't believe how good your bass sounds; looks like he's having an OMG moment.
-
That’s my explanation also.
-
Yikes!!!
-
Cool! :)
-
Yes! The Classico has landed.
8)
-
Wow, Jazzy, that's great!
-
Congratulations! Enjoy!
-
Playing the '78 Omega Series I at Porch Fest today...
-
That is a seriously classy bass Rob... 8)
-
Porch Fest!
-
Thanks, Greg! And yes, David, I love playing at Porch Fest, there is music all over town happening simultaneously... such a cool idea!
-
Playing my Spoiler. Next month we belong together for 25 years!
-
Another pic - in the practice room.
-
Congrats on 25 years!

Gig last night at a festival in Telford
-
Nice bass Fogdiver!
Cool pic Jazzyvee :)
-
Yes; very cool pic JV.

You can just see the head-stock of my Series I for this HOT outdoor gig.

The band that followed us (97Nine), also has a bass player who plays an Alembic. He was smiling at me as they were loading in. At first I couldn't figure out why, but then I realized - a fellow Alembic aficionado.
-
That’s really cool Tom. ‘Cept for the heat index!
Does Jeff from 97nine know about this sight?
I found this about him, love the heart shaped omega cut.

I played last Friday and Saturday nights at the same place, indoors at a small festival in Dorset, UK. The lighting wasn't great, but you can just about make out the Epic bass I bought a few days before the gig. I thought I'd try it for a couple of numbers and then use my tried and trusted Fender or Gibson, but never even opened the cases on the spares, all I wanted to play was my Alembic!
-
Congrats on your new Alembic!
-
Thank you! Hopefully some better pictures from the weekend will come to light, but I was wedged into a dark corner and couldn't face the audience without risking a dent in the Epic's headstock from hitting the keyboard player's head!

Cool! I'm actually a founding member of 97Nine (and gave the band its name, based off the old 97.9 the Loop radio station). I've played Jeff's bass. It's a beast! 36'' scale 5 string Rogue with a mini omega cut. I had just bought my Distillate when I decided to leave the band, so I thought it was funny they got a guy who plays an Alembic!

Small world! Yeah, that 36" Rogue is quite something, with the Extra-Long Scale. And 97Nine is a great band, too. Definitely benefits by having a bass with definition like that.

We didn't get too long to chat - load-in and load-out was a tight turnaround, so I didn't get a chance to mention the Alembic Club to him.
-
Not sure if he knows about the club, but he does know about the website in general. Another acquaintance of ours owns an amazing "featured custom" called She. http://www.alembic.com/info/fc_she.html
-
Here is a pic at a local Jazz festival with my Series II Europa.
And actually this was one of the rare times I have used an ampeg rig on stage that didn't sound like it had been thrashed.
I put the graphic flat and kept away from any kind of input gain or eq that produced the edgy sounds the other bands got and I was rewarded handsomely with sonic sweetness.
-
Man, that's a pretty bass!
-
Great pic, I'm usually in the dark next to the drums, so rare to get anything worth sharing, definitely none as clear as yours. Cool bass, cool player.
-
That happens on most of the gigs when I'm not the band leader as in those I'm usually hidden at the back by the drummer and behind the brass section.
This gig was different as I'm the band leader so right up front with the sax player.
-
Nice pic JV.
-
That's me too... support musician, even with Harwell-Grice Band I'm positioned in back, where the camera's eye seldom catches me. Which is fine... I do wish my basses made it into a few action pictures though. ;D
-
Nice pic, Jazzy! Looking sharp.
-
I'm not gigging at the moment so heres a picture of my lad with my bass a couple of weeks ago at the Buckle and Boots festival.

Cool picture, I hope to get to one of George's gigs one day.
-
Cool!
-
81D1986 & me, in the studio last week.
-
This was brought up in a different thread... here is the infamous Pull My Finger group at The Globe.
The zebrawood on the Distillate clashes with the horizontal stripes on my shirt... What was I thinking? ??? :D
-
The zebrawood top and neck lams in the distillate blend into your shirt really well, like camouflage. It's a cool effect!
-
Cool pic Pauldo :)
-
Yeah, +1 on the pic, Pauldo...
-
Thanks guys, I actually remember that time of the show.
It was the first song, Have You Been to the Mountain? an ode to Martin Luther King Jr. written by our guitarist, started soft and slow and then really drives hard - obligatory hair waving moment when it kicks into gear!
The hair ain’t so long these days and sadly that song hasn’t been played in a long time.
-
I played a wicked festival in Rochdale, UK, on the weekend just gone with a girl called, Emily Faye (https://www.facebook.com/theemilyfayemusic/)!
I hope you like the picture!

Great picture! Nice to see "Direwolf" getting a workout. :)
-
Nice, geepee, looks like you’ve been having fun playing some cool festivals this summer!
-
here is one that my keyboard player took of me :)

This photo is from my gig with " Dead Guise" at the Castro Valley Fall Fair on 9/8/18
-
Allright!! (Nice shirt, by the way!)
-
Nice shirt, sure... I'm diggin' the bike cap and the Essence.
-
Had a last minute gig on Saturday backing up Grammy award winning guitarist/producer/songwriter Larry Mitchell, along with local guitar whiz Dave Uhrich. Fun stuff, no rehearsal! Brought the Distillate and it sounded great. There was some low end feedback on stage that we finally figured out was likely the bass rig aggravating a drum mic. I eventually turned down the lows and it seemed to go away.
-
Love Larry Mitchell's playing and the way he shapes his sound; he has been one of the resources I've drawn from in learning how to use delays and reverb. Cool that you got to play with him!

That's cool! I wasn't familiar with him prior to this. He sent me some song files a few days prior to the gig and we had a quick run through in the dressing room before the show. Really nice stuff, and he is the NICEST guy. Super chill and appreciative.

Nice bass, medium scale? Gotta love a Series Alembic! :)

Medium Scale correct! Thanks!

Here is a pic from my recent gig with Musical Youth at Birmingham Town Hall. it’s a really big old concert hall in the centre of the city That has been refurbished in recent years and has great acoustics.
-
The Twin!
-
The Twin!
Absolutely. I just love the sound of that bass.
-
Bowie tribute band :)
-
Cool!
-
Nice! Is that the custom bees wing Schedua Series I bass with tree-of-life inlay?
-
Yes it is...76 070 :)
-
Rehearsal, doing a Leonard Bernstein the Mass, two basses, two guitars, two drums and 3 choirs, plus symphony orchestra with extra percussion, so cool to be in the middle of all that sound!
-
That bass is looking good under those lights.
-
What a Mass...ive band, Goran!
-
Nice bass... unreal ensemble. Is this your regular gig?
-
Thanks guys! Nope, not regular gig (I wish, ha!), they just need a el. bass players for that concert, actually two concerts :)
It's so great to play it!
-
Bourbon Street Jazz Bar (same stage where I watched Marcus Miller and the late B.B. King), such honor!
-
Nice video!

Playing an 11lbs Series 1 behind my head sorta screwed up my neck that night...

Here is a video with my series I & II Europa basses from a Grover Washington jr tribute gig i put on a few years back at a music college.
-
Solid grooves and great tones all around on that Jazzyvee!
Real nice What is Hip? bassline.
-
here is a small clip with Kozmodrum band, the bass has octaver pedal til the end
-
My recent gig with Yoga Lin at Taipei Arena. I am running my Series 1 through an F1X+SF2. In this video Im using the neck pickup only because this part I’m going wireless.
-
Cool stuff, Picure!
-
Great playing Picure. First time I've seen a capo used on a bass.
-
Thanks rv_bass and jazzyvee!
I could play this same song without the capo but some passages wont sound as smooth.
-
Really cool!
-
With the Tokyo Giants - 10-pieces R&B outfit - at the Linsmore Tavern.
-
Nice pic! Always fun playing with a horn section (ass-u-me that a 10 piece band has a couple horns).
-
Yup. 5 horns. Good clean fun!
-
Pic from tonight's show. Thanks,David for explaining how to attach pics. Simple enough right? >.>
-
Nice action shot!

Nice, Stefanie, cool effect on the neck and head from movement too! Is that a walnut top?

Zebrawood ^.^
-
VERY cool! (Is that some sort of mall you're in?)
-
VERY cool! (Is that some sort of mall you're in?)
Yes, we're playing in the mall, lol. I love the acoustics to be honest. There's a wonderful natural reverb in that place and I love playing there. There's a bar that pays us and they have doors that open completely so it's open to the mall. We face the bar. Fun times!
-
... Thanks, David for explaining how to attach pics ...
You're welcome; and thanks for sharing your gig picture!
-
Nice...I love zebrawood! :)
-
I've just got home from a video shoot with a band I help out on bass for. This is for their latest single release though I wasn't playing on the studio version.
Had to take the series II. :-)
They wanted it to be a black suit affair. :-(
I will post a link to the video once it's edited which apparently will be in about 2 weeks time.
-
Lookin’ good Jazzyvee! :)
-
Dang, Jazzy! Looking sharp there!
-
...although, I hope that's not any OFFICIAL release, because I can't quite make out the drummer. (!!). Beautiful bass, though!
-
No it is snap a friend of the band took ok a mobile. There were no official photos taken.
-
From my last gig on 2/16/19 .
-
Nice picture, Wolf, looks like you guys had a cool light show!
-
Thanks Rob !
Yes , the light show was swell ! We were asked to rebook at that venue by the owner . I think that might be on 6/8/19.
-
I might just be there at the time
slawie

Slawie , It would be great to see you !
Wolf

One gig in a small club, some years ago..
-
Nice pics, Wolf and Alex. :D
That light show is something in your pic, Wolf. SO trippy.
-
The originals band I play with was set to release a new CD before Christmas. Unfortunately, still finishing the final mix. On the positive side we had some professional pictures taken for the CD. Here's the first action shot of the 'blistered Koa' Series 1 bass I was able to acquire last fall.
(Oops! Image problems!)

Wow, Wolf, great lightning!

Tim, There are size limitations for files.... try making a copy of the original and making it’s file size less than 500KB. We all like to ogle each other’s wood crafted wonders.
-
Here is a picture from my gig last night. Series II action.
-
Nice shot of the band in action, Jazzyvee.
-
Hey, Vince. Nice looking Bass. Tina says hi and asked if it was a Brexit party! Lol
Bill, tgo
-
Hi Bill, gigging is a good escape from the blanket media coverage on Brexit. I wish there was this kind of coverage and analysis before the vote.
Back on to all things Alembic, Dave did you notice the Classico peeking out behind me :-) That gig was my double bass debut and we battled through a couple of Stanley Clarke powered tracks, 500 miles high and Sakura Sakura. I should be getting some professionally shot pictures from the gig so will post them after I get to check them out.
-
This is a picture taken at rehearsal yesterday by the Marketing team for the Birmingham Symphony Hall for their instagram page.
And the last two were taken by a photographer at the gig in the evening.
-
Nice shots of you with the Classico. 500 Miles High is an old favorite, and I imagine it's fun to play on the Classico.
-
Your technique and posture is spot-on Jazzy... you instructor is teaching you well! (and that bass is a Classy-co for sure!) ;D I know I keep saying this, but this sibling to yours is just a few kilometers from me here in Virginia. https://reverb.com/item/3711147-alembic-classico The only thing stopping me from going to play it is I know I'll want one. ::)
-
David, yep It has a great feel to it. I am nowhere near playing it the way Clarkee does but I still managed to play it in a way that kept the feel of the track.
That classico on Reverb is very close to what mine looks like they could indeed be made from the same slab of maple.
-
A video I did with a local band recently has just been released on their web site.
Warning Alembic Series II prominently on display however I am not the bass player on the record. I think he used a Jaydee bass.
Not a valid %s URL
-
Very professional production. 8)
I'm wondering how does that work in post-production, Jazzy? Are you all playing/singing along to audio playback so it synchs up to video?
-
Yep. I got sent the track to learn.
-
Me and my buddy Teddy-Mac working out some new tunes for this year. The older I get, the more I appreciate my close musical friends... Ted and I have been playing music together off and on in some formation for almost 30 years now. This was one of the first outings for the new-to-me old Series I. She fit right in with Ted's Huss & Dalton 'Crossroads' guitar.
-
Nice stuff, Jazzyvee!
Greg, can’t put that Series down can you? :)
-
Greg; you and Ted look like you're having fun.
-
The older I get, the more I appreciate my close musical friends...
Absolutely!
-
In the dazed haze... hard to say what I was thinking about here. Probably something like:
(((hmmm... does that bridge filter need to be a little more open?)))
-
Just realizing... In a few months I will get to 10 years of being the caretaker for my beloved Alembic (and also being member of this wonderful club!!!). Hoooray!!!!
(Edit: And also realizing I somehow managed to post this in the wrong thread... and cannot find a way to delete it by myself, so if any moderator can delete this... Or just leave it for the cheerfulness of it :) )
-
A bit late but finally found a video of our first concert of our tour last December with Yoga Lin. In this video I’m rockin’ the Series 1 with SF2+F1X. This was before I sent her back to the mothership for upgrades.
Full band comes in at 2:50
-
Here are a few more pics from one of my gigs last month.
Hopefully Mica will forgive me for covering the logo with my clip on tuner ;D :-\ ;)
-
Ah! you are using the Classico. I'd love to hear some clips of it being used at your gigs.
-
Beautiful bass, Jazzyvee! Looks like you and G of H use the same strap, what kind is it? Looks like a good one. :)
-
Yes we do. Its from a Greek company. Here is a link.
https://www.minotaurguitarstraps.com/bass-wide-straps/109-bass-fclef-used-look.html (https://www.minotaurguitarstraps.com/bass-wide-straps/109-bass-fclef-used-look.html)
I have tried a few of the minotaur straps over the years and that one is by far the most comfortable with heavy basses and the leather is thicker.
-
Hammer, i have used it on one gig so far. As a complete novice I haven’t enough hours on it or the technique to do a whole gig yet.
I did two tracks recorded by Stanley Clarke, 500 miles high and Sakura Sakura. There were a lot of phone cameras in action on thet gig but no-one i spoke to recorded 500 miles high which is really the one i felt went the best.
-
Playing my spoiler at my 50th birthday party last march.
-
...one more time.
-
Looks like a great way to celebrate 50 to me! I hope to do something like that for my 50th next month. Definitely, an Alembicized event.
-
Happy Birthday!
-
not a superb performance, but I'd like to show you, guys... (be nice)
I'm into bass solo arrangements which I can play chords and melodies along bass line at same time and still keep the original song recognizable. Not every tune permits that on 4 string bass. My old time pals would be surprise for the selection (we were jazz snobs at the 80s), but this one was perfect to my goal and I didn't even have to change a note to match bass open strings.
-
EX-cellent!! (I would disagree - that WAS a superb performance!). Cool headstock addition, as well!
-
King Lizard? Ha, thanks!
-
:D 8)
-
Nice video!
-
Here is a pic of me demo-ing my Classico at the Midlands Bass Bash at the Doveridge Village Hall in a lovely little village in near Ashbourne Derbyshire yesterday.
-
Nice! :)
How is it transporting the Classico? If I remember right, you drive a fairly small vehicle... seats lay flat?
-
We travelled in my other half’s volvo so it fitted fine. The last time i took it out was in my smart for four with my 5 string, amp and cab with stands. A smart for two which i had previously can comfortably fit a 3/4 double bass with the front seat down.
-

Hobby band, iPhone recording, best with ear buds/headphones.
This was an early recording of an original tune.

Great tune Michael and thanks Tom.
I miss our fellow lady club member who played Epic through a boss looper, but can't remember her name... long time no see.

I'm going through a phase of playing dim lit gigs but hey, thanks to the LED's, groovin' ain't a problem!
I can't be the only player that also goes through phases of having a favourite bass, doesn't matter what brand! They all play different and serve different projects...it's a wonderful puzzle!
Have a great day folks!

George, always impressed by your videos and Alembics. Is that an Alembic version of a jazz bass? Rock on!
-
Thank you! It's an Alembic Custom P/J Bass! I picked it up at Bass Direct a few months ago! Europa electronics and it sounds so good! Fast neck, great sound, everything you'd hope an Alembic would be!
Thank you!

-
Nice looking bass, Theodore; and welcome to the board.
-
I got sent a mix of the track to review on Saturday night and had a quick listen after getting home from my gig. The band leader sent it to me as she thinks I have a good ear for things like this.

Here's a cool photo, sorry for those in the Facebook group that may have seen this...!

Here are a few bars of me on a gig with Musical Youth playing their most popular track, (needs no introduction i'm sure), on this festival gig I was playing my Series II Europa 5.
It's on facebook so i'm uncertain who will be able to see the video clip.

Hey George we have another London gig coming up next month 10th August. I will send you details in case you want to take in another of our gigs.
-
Taken at a gig last weekend, depping in a UB40 tribute band called UB42. It's been a long time since I've taken my standard Europa bass out on a gig.
-
Nice shot of you and the Europa!

Space Heaters (of Connecticut) at the end of Railroad Days, Canaan, CT. We had a blast playing right before the fireworks (which is a great way to guarantee a good crowd). I'm loving the Brown Bass. The low end fundamentals are incredible.

If you're in Northwestern Connecticut and enjoy the Dead, come see us at Housatonic River Brewing (New Milford) Sept 1. 3-6 pm.
More gigs to come in Canaan in the Fall.

Just got around to seeing this. Really cool. Loved the song and bassline, too. Awesome!

I'm currently depping on an AWESOME gig with a band called Lethbridge Owen! We played a cool festival last weekend and somehow, this was taken! I know the tread is called, 'Post a pic playing your Alembic' but there don't seem any threads called, 'Post a pic pointing at people in the audience'...!
Have a great day folks!

Nice picture Jazzy. I seem to remember in the opening chapter of Victor Wooten's book, "The Music Lesson" he had fallen asleep while practicing on the sofa... perhaps you are onto something there. :D

I do that all the time. That's why I never get better. I sleep more than practice ;)

Brief thread hijack... since I brought it up; Vic's book is a highly recommended read. It's from a while back, (2008) but I really got a lot out of it.

In keeping with the picture theme, here's one from a Saturday morning practice session. I listen to a Saturday morning radio program about gardening at 6am, (from the sofa!) then I practice a while. Sometimes I record with the phone... this is a still from earlier this year when I was learning a September 1977 version of "Peggy-O" on #77-621.
-
Nice bass!
-
Very McVie-ish!

Haven't posted on here for a while so here's a shot from a recent One One Seven gig I played at the Vortex Lounge in Cumbernauld (about midway between Glasgow and Edinburgh). We used their backline and kit for the gig so no big Mesa boxes behind me but the Signature Deluxe sounded fantastic anyway.
For an extra treat here's a link to a few of our own tunes recorded last year..

Nice pic, Graeme!
-
From a party we played Friday night... Series I silhouette, caught by the backline cam.
One of the caterers happened to be a guitar player, and asked- what was that bass I was playing, as he had never seen or heard anything like it... the crystalline highs but thunderous lows too. I just smiled, and told the story, (the shorter version) and made sure he knew they made guitars too.
-
It is always a pleasure when a discerning eye/ear recognizes the craftsmanship from the Mothership.
-
One of the guys who subs with Harwell-Grice Band sent me this one earlier today... it's from a gig we played on a floating boat dock a little while back. Me and my first Alembic, 89P5559, a Persuader five-string the folks at Alembic HQ helped me put back in proper order a few years ago. She's still a regular go-to.
-
Taken during soundcheck this afternoon at Birmingham Symphony Hall.
-
Very cool. That is my favorite photo in this entire thread!
-
Im not sure why its upside down. Its the right way up on my phone.
-
Let me help you with that, Jazzy--here's a couple bro-in-law Tom put up on FB today. He called you Thunder Thumbs.
-
Thunder Thumbs! 8)
-
I thought that was reserved for Louis Johnson. Im certainly not anywhere near that league. Buti did have a quick chat with Tom before the gig started.
-
Me and “Little Acer” (Acer is the Latin genus for maple) playing the melody and solo for Goodbye Porkpie Hat...love that tune.
-
Lookin' good Rob! And... excellent choice of tune.
-
Nice!
-
Thanks, guys :)
-
Yes, Pork Pie Hat is a wonderful tune. And a nice picture of the instrument and musician.
-
A shot from the gig last night. I was using my Burl Redwood Series I Europa 5 string bass and my barefaced cabs and SF-2 as pre-amp.
-
Nice Jazzyvee, that burl one is a beautiful bass. I’m going to have to try the SF-2 as a Stand alone preamp.
-
The SF-2 as a pre-amp works well for me but using it is not as straight forward as I hoped it would be. I think it's harder to use as a standalone than in the send return look. Here is my take on it in my use and I accept I may be wrong in what I'm hearing compared to how it's supposed to sound. Firstly I only use it as a standalone pre-amp when playing reggae and I've not tried gigging it with other genre's because I found it too hard to make tone changes at the bass on the fly as the SF-2 seems to be the filter that is taking charge so I can't really hear it much.
For reggae I'm only generally dealing with the frequencies below the bass guitar filter cut off point so around 200 to 100hz that enables me to get some more heft and I keep the filtered signal about half the level of the unfiltered signal so that I can hear some of the upper frequencies to help with hearing my pitch clearly.
When I use it in the send/return loop of my F1-x for other gigs it is much less bossy with the sound and I can much more easily set it up in a way that allows me to control the sound more from the bass than having to make changes from the SF/2 or F1-z.
A superb piece of kit though but you can easily ruin a speaker that can't take a lot of bottom end with it. Don't ask me how I know that... :-)
-
Thanks for the feedback. Based on your description I think I’ll stay with it running through an F-1X. And yes, a fantastic filter!
-
One of the forum members Will Gunn uses his as a preamp for his series bass. However he has no filters on his bass and so sets all his tone using the SF-2. I would suggest getting in touch with him as he is extremely helpful and knowledgeable on this and all things alembic. I have had hugely beneficial chats with him on line over the years.

here is another pic from my second gig with my classico. im not sure why its upside down.

I copied and flipped it, let’s see if it worked...
-
That's a great shot! (better right side up ;) )

Very nice... that looks like it could be a magazine ad!

Thanks for flipping the photo. i tried it and still when i posted it, it showed upside done.

It's been a while, still loving "Walter"

Nice pic, very relaxed :)
I'm having deja vu ;D
-
@edward, No I always use my DS-5 when practicing on my series bass.
@Stefanie, yeah that particular relaxation happens a lot when I'm practicing late at night. Strangely enough many times when I get home from a gig I need to play at home before hitting the sack in order relax and come down from the high of the gig. Usually those times I fall asleep with the bass in my hand waking up to a cold house, put the bass away and go to bed.

Stephanie, I'm a pedal guy so I'm a little curious about which pedals do you have there...
And, btw, Distillates have an incredibly beautiful body shape, isn't?

Hi Mario the pedals on the board I'm using are polytuner->boss ds1 distortion->mxr bass octive ->Ebs bass IQ->Rodenberg GAS 707->ibanez flanger. I'm thinking about getting a compressor and the tc electronic g system next year. I love playing around with that stuff.
My bass is a Spoiler and I love it. Distillates are awesome looking, for sure.
-
someone said pedals? ;D
-
Wow Goran, I'm curious what music do you play where you use all those pedals?
-
Yeah that's quite an impressive pedalboard, Goran! I wouldn't mind seeing some closeup pics ;)

It's kind of weird EDM but all played live.
Something like this that I did:

I am perpetually amazed and often humbled by the sheer talent on this Board.

Ops, sorry for geting the bass wrong and thanks for your reply.
Hey, I use a Compressor (a simple one overeasy slider DBX, the 163X) but after Wha and Envelope Filter to kind of tame any excessive volume raise in their ressonant peaks. I also placed it after modulation and that helped me to match its natural volume loss compared to other pedal's output levels, great tool.
-
Love your band, Goran. Great playing, congrats!

New Years eve gig on main square... Friend of mine took the pic.

I have a pedalboard review on my youtube channel just search for my name, or just type bass pedalboard it will be there.. it is an old one but planing to do a new one soon.
thanks
-
Goran, I just watched your YouTube pedal board video. Nice demonstration of the pedals and cool sounds individually and in combination!
-
Thanks, now you gave me more strength to make another one. :)
-
That New Year's Eve gig looks cold, Goran... hope you had some hand-warmers in your pockets! Nice picture. :)
-
Nice pics, goran! Lovely crowd and brrrrr!
-
Yea it was cold, but still I wasn't able to wear gloves without fingers and play 5 string... but it was a fun night!
-
Ha! I'm sorry Goran, I was afraid that might be lost in translation... I never could play with gloves either. There is a product available here designed to keep your hands warm, just while in your pockets, though you could put them in gloves too. I don't know if Hot Hands are available in Eastern Europe. https://hothands.com/ I use these on my job during cold Winter days when I have to be outdoors, but they are great to have a couple in your pockets for a cold outdoor gig too. They have saved me quite a few times. This was a VERY cold Christmas parade several years (and pounds!) ago, with my '81 Distillate.
-
Oh Edward, I didn't know about this. Looks like SciFi to me, just showed it to my wife and she was like "you can buy them here." Wish I knew that sooner. :)
Btw. for warmth I use McNair shirt made by Merino wool. Light but warmest jacket I ever tried. I telling you this because your shirt reminds me of McNair https://mcnairshirts.com/

First gig of 2020 with my series I guitar.
-
My first gig with my new (to me) Series 1. Sound was glorious. Glare from the setting sun in set one was strong!

Great to see that bass at work again... nice picture! 8)

Starting the year with a Series I gig. Things can only get better. Enjoy that masterful bass. Cool pocture Hdfixer
-
Hdfixer, cool bass!
Jazzyvee, would you happen to have a sound clip of your guitar with that band? I have a Series I guitar and I’d love to hear the sounds others are getting out of theirs.
-
Jazzy; which band is that?
HD; nice picture!
-
The only pic I have of me playing my Alembic is a screenshot from a video, but the look on my face says it all! I need some more gigs!!! ;D

Hi David, it is a newly formed band called Big Ship Alliance and they are a Freddie McGregor tribute band and that was their first gig. I got involved at the last minute because their guitarist had to go away to deal with family issues in the caribbean. A rare guitar gig for me gave me a chance to get the dragon out.
@rv_bass, I played clean mostly into two channels of my JC120. If I remember correctly, channel 1 (dry), I had the neck pickup with a wah pedal and a Radial Tonebone Trimode distortion pedal which is one that sounds great with active guitars. the bridge pickup went in the second channel which has built in chorus and a little reverb. I kept both pickups on all the time and changed the tone using the filters and volumes. However part way through the early part of the set the battery on the wah went flat so that wasn't used much sadly as thats my main pedal.
I will see if there are any decent sound clips or video clips.
-
Nice picture Casey; and looks like a good crowd too.

That smile! We know that smile.

I saw them yesterday, thanks!

Some pictures came in today unfortunately the octopad on it's stand was in front in all the photos so the guitar is not featured in any..
Yes I still have my intense gigging face on. hahaha It's a bit of a trade mark for me too.
-
Nice shot!
-
My nephew spotted this snippet of HGB on YouTube... and me with the Custom fretless Alembic. I'm pretty sure it's from a show last June that Gabe couldn't make, hence our regular go-to Ernie is on resonator guitar.
It's a shame they didn't get the rest of "Deep Ellum" here... sounds like we were having a pretty good time with it!
-
Your Custom sounds clear and big....cool stuff :D
-
Cool, great band, Edward.
-
Nice video Gregory!
-
:D
-
Gregory? Oh, man...
-
Gregory? Oh, man...
I answer to either one, Mario. ;) ('Edward' is an old family name, usually assigned to eldest male children... if my Mom calls me that in a certain tone of voice, it usually means I'm in trouble!)

Nice video, Greg, sounds great, love Deep Elm as well!

Oh, yes, we've all heard that mom's "you're in trouble mister" tone once... ha!
-
Here is a picture from the same gig as the picture I posted 9 up from here. It has a better pic of the guitar.
-
I've just been setting up a new hard drive to hold all my media files and stumbled across this golden oldie from about 2006. I had not long got this Europa and I think this was my first gig with it. My naive self decided to covered Marcus Miller's version of Frankenstein because I loved the original version by I think Edgar Winter and also it pushed me in my learning to slap and double thumb. Quite a raw sound from the band compared to our current sound and a lot more grey hair too.
-
That was a treat. :D
-
My band The Morgan Hillbillies, played The Granada Theater in Morgan Hill CA Saturday night as part of St. Catherine's school Cougar Gala Auction. We had fun!
And video! I'm still getting used to the "muscle memory" of this bass so one small flub while singing and playing at the same time, but I don't think anyone noticed. Walking bass solo too!
I was running into a DarkGlass Hyper Luminal Compressor > Bergantino B|Amp>Bergantino HG410 (the sealed cab with 3 forward and 1 back firing speakers). Very happy with the sound. Oh, and TI Jazz Flat strings - my favorite flats (run them on my Epic 5 fretless too).
-
Well done!
-
The tone on that beautiful bass is fabulous, cuts through the mix very nicely. 8)
-
Nice, HDFixer!
-
HDFixer, that's a beautiful bass, nice video!

I was practicing with some friends the other day, saw this on the wall. Iconic.

Thanks a lot Edwarldo! And yea, my touring has been postponed until mid May but who knows if the gigs in May will happen? :-[
-

Thanks a lot pauldo! I actually didn’t use any distortion pedal for this video, I only used the demo version of the AMPEG SVT VR bt Universal Audio and cranked it to overdrive.

That brought a smile! :-D
-
YES! You are getting quite a fanbase built up over here Jack. :)
Looks like you've got both pickups up full, and Q-switches in the mid position, but I can't quite see where your filters are set. I did catch a little tweak at about 1:55. Sounds awesome man!

Thanks for checking it out! If I have my neck filter about 35% open and my bridge about 25% open.

Accidentally caught the Alembic rack-mount stack in the background the other day... the old 1914 Gibson I'm playing here has been in my care since 1999. It belongs to an old friend. I sent her the picture to let her know we were both okay. :)
(its actually a cropped still from a video, but I can't figure out how to shrink the files enough to post them here...)

... I can't figure out how to shrink the files enough to post them here...)
Best thing for posting a video is to upload it somewhere else and post a link. For instance, years ago I opened a vimeo account, uploaded a couple videos, marked them private, and posted the links here in the club. I think you can do the same thing on youtube, though I've never tried it. For all I know the vimeo rules might have changed since then; but might be worth looking into it.
-
You are correct David, I do the same sometimes. Post as private on youtube and post the link here.
If you use a social network like facebook, then they are only visible if you are a member or the uploaded video is set to public outside of facebook.
Youtube is easier.
-
-
Mario that was a treat! Your smile makes it even better, can tell you were having fun.
All tracks are the Rogue? She sounds great.
-
Thanks, Pauldo. Yes, the Rogue did the 3 voices, I've just fiddled with the filter, switches and PU balance to change enought their tones to keep each part in its own space. Amazing how versatile Alembic can be. One voice does chords and melody, the second brings the bass line plus harmonics and the third makes the guitar voice.
Some saturation and chorus were also added to the "guitar" part during mixing process, "bass and harmonics" was compressed and both were sent to delay and reverb aux tracks. The "main" voice has no ambience and got a heavier compression and limiting just to sound more raw and forward.
The smile came after finally getting it right at the 11th take, ha! At the moment I wasn't aware that my quicktime movies were taken at low frame rate and that would mess with sync in editing. So it didn't matter after all, could have "punch in" the track or comb several takes and just mimic when filming.
-
That's great Mario. Nice A/V skills too. :D
I'm working on a couple 'play along with' videos and thinking of establishing a channel for posting. Just giving myself a fence to swing for in the gig-less situation we're all finding ourselves in of late.
-
Very nice Picure and Mario, really enjoyed both. Mario, I have to learn the video/sound recording and editing, looks fun!
-
I am enjoying Picure's movies and performance then my eyes start to drift away from the scale... what a nice collection!
-
I'm very squeamish about posting this up here with you guys, so go easy on me... just having a little fun playing along with the Grateful Dead on my Custom fretless 5-string. The tune is one of my favorites from the 5/5/1977 New Haven show.
Roll tape in the practice room... Peggy-O, take-two...
-
Greg, that sounded great, and on a fretless, very nice! :)
-
The Custom Fretless sounds rich and wonderful,
...nice take!
-
... just having a little fun playing along with the Grateful Dead on my Custom fretless... Peggy-O ...
That was great, and reflects the time you've spent studying Phil's playing.

A lighten up the spirits “Full Moon Driveway Jam”. For the neighborhood peeps.
-
I love it, Pete! :D Was just talking to my buddy Ted yesterday about the logistics of doing a neighborhood jam if/when it ever gets warm enough up here... between us we've got enough PA equipment to broadcast the few blocks we'd need to reach. We're thinking Memorial Day weekend.
-
Gregory, this little jam really uplifted a lot of people from some dole drums. Including us!
If you can pull it off it’s worth it’s weight just in smiles.
You sounded great in your previous post.
Onwards in hopes of improved lives.
Peace
-
Thanks Greg
-
I took a swing at "Tennessee Jed" recently, with my Persuader 5-string... (hence, the coupla' extra-low notes - I couldn't resist) ;D
-
Just has first post lockdown rehearsal with a band i joined just before lockdown. Took the classico to see how my learner fingers are coping. Its a band called La Cigale and play Brazillian music.
-
Such a cool bass... love those old silver-face Mesa WalkAbouts too. Very hard to beat!
...For some reason my phone picture refuses to show upright...
Of an upright bass! The un-kind irony! ;D
-
Spent some quality time this morning with #77-621 plugged into a little bit different setup. Couple weeks ago, I snagged a really good buy on an older Mesa Diesel 15 cab in the local Craigslist, and bought it just to keep in the Harwell-Grice band van. (so I don't have to carry a cabinet around anymore...) I even made a makeshift case for it out of an old shipping carton. Those things are built like a tank, and are about 80 lbs. It'll be fine living in the chaos of the Urban Assault Vehicle. It came with casters already mounted! Now (if ever the gigs return) I can show up with my two chosen Alembic basses and this Gator 3u zipper with an old red-knob model F-1X and a Crown XLS 1000 poweramp, and a small pedalboard that sits on top. It has only my Mesa DI, a Polytune strobe in a dedicated Tuner out, a Chorus and a Compressor, both in an effects loop. I keep this antique DS-1 unit #27 with Dave's old Series I. It is a stereo-only unit, so I had a Y-adapter made so it was more gig-able. (and Jeannie, of course...)
I ran a few tests with it this morning... there is a touch of chorus here, and the Mesa DI 'boost' is engaged. EQ is basically flat... though I am boosting the bass and treble a bit at the F-1X. Deep & Bright switches are disengaged. 621's controls are set: both pickups on, bridge filter at about 40% open, Q-switch off, neck filter 85% open, Q-switch center.
The backing track is from Wikiloops. I particularly enjoy this drummer and guitarists' playing.
-
Pretty Bass!
-
Greg, 77-621 sounds great, sounds like you have round wounds on it, nice rich tone!
Dela, beautiful bass...Wow!! :)
-
That Zebrawood, Michael. 8) I should have given you the hat-tip there... that's your old red-knob F-1X, at work again! ;D
Thanks Rob. :)
When 621 came to me from Mr. Dave Houck, it was strung with T-I Jazz Rounds, and they were just magical on that bass. I had the T-I Jazz Flats I usually prefer on there for a short time, but as soon as it was refretted, those wonderful green-silked Rounds went right back on, and the sizzle returned. It's hard to mess up a good Series I, but there are some combinations that just work better... this is one of them.
-
Nice picture, Michael!
-
Here I am playing at a gig on 10/27/19.
-
Wolf, looks like you are deep in the groove. Nice looking walnut Essence with sustain block and Q! :)
-
Thanks Rob !
-
From a welcome rescheduled, previously covid-cancelled gig, last night; a fundraising effort in the little community of Callaway in Franklin Co. Virginia, home of the Harwell-Grice Band. It was COLD here last night. My car said 44° after load-out. Brrr! Like everyone else, we've played very little this year... this was only our second time onstage this season with only one more thing in the books for 2020.
I took along the fretless Hyak Scroll bass [78-0502] for a backup and switchoff, (see it peeking out from behind the bass rig?) but played with "Joy" [#80-1684] most all evening. She's getting prepared and packed up safe today for the long trip home to California. Good things about to happen there. :)
*had a little fun with the editor... picture is a videocapture anyway. ::)
-
I hope you were able to stay safe. After the events of this past week I'm even more inclined to stay home than I was before.
Stopped at my favorite local sandwich shop about a week ago, which I had visited maybe twice since February, and found they had to close again because one of the staff there had tested positive, this in a place that was following good protocols.
Good that you got to play again, but do stay safe.
Edit: Ah; I see in the other thread that you were playing outside. Good! (Though a bit cold for sure.)
-
This recording session had to be postponed until after I got this last ESI. Then I had to practice a while... My smilin' buddy here (also a Gregory) runs an advertising agency, and records his own backing tracks. He's quite a monster drummer, and a pretty fair guitarist too, and truth be told, he could've just played the bass track himself, but he wanted me and my Alembic to come do them. So in a few weeks, the local restaurants, muffler shops, oil change places, just about anything you can imagine with a radio commercial needing a rock backing track will hear Greg and Greg, on bass, drums, and guitars.
Forthcoming Album working title is: "We Never Heard Of You Either" ;D
Dave, your old bass really sings.... my goodness that thing is soooo sweet. :)
-
Happy Easter. Good to be back at it..
-
Another from the weekend. If you expand, a good look at my series II.
-
Beautiful bass, is it fretless? And is the top a type of burled maple?
-
Wow that bass is spectacular. I am impressed with anyone who plays fretless bass but to choose an alembic surely speaks volumes of the confidence a player has in their own abillity to play consistently in tune. As we know alembic basses are completely honest and will shout from the rooftops in absolute clarity whatever you play, right or not.
Hats off to you sir. :)
Do you have any sound clips or youtube links?
-
I just found this pic in newspaper where I did some live show for national TV station and somebody took a pic of a guy that did a video editing for music video.
I just though that's a great pic, can you spot an Alembic? :)
-
Goran, nice shots of the Alembic, beautiful bass, be sure to post a link when the video comes out! :)
-
Oh yea forgot about that, truthfully I think this was made for some show for national TV station, I don't really know... but it was fun seeing all those people after lockdown and after not being able to play for long time.
-
Wow, that was awesome, looks like so much fun! I love all of the percussion and the little guy on the purple drums, saw a fretless player in there too. Thanks for sharing! :)
-
Very cool, though I doubt that is a live mix. I suspect 25 guitars, 25 basses, and 40 drummers would be more reminiscent of Woodstock = lots of mud!
Bill, tgo
-
Thanks a lot, I know the recorded drums and guitars there live, but just to add to whole mix pic, basses were done in studio. Yea it was fun to do that, great experience, and everything sounded huge
-
Looks like a cool venue too!
-
That video made me smile.
-
It is fretless. The wood is Masur Birch which I had spotted in the Wood Bank section under the heading “ Out in Left Field.” Has a center Ebony stripe running through neck which really ties together the brightness of the Birch and the smooth low end of the ebony fingerboard. Play through an F-1X pre-amp. As always Mica and Susan’s input helped create an amazing sounding bass.
-
Nine years ago today Mica handed this lovely dream bass to me at their Santa Rosa Facility. The joy of playing it has made me a better player and improved my ability to shape my sound more effectively for live gigs. The tone, playability and articulation is incredible. Whilst i am not the original owner i asked the seller 'Poor Nigel' to send it to Santa Rosa so i could pick it up there and attend the 2012 annual gathering.
Great memories of that trip and i really enjoyed meeting Mica, some of the alembic team, Ron, Bill tgo and his family and the some of the members of this forum. Thanks 👍🏾
-
Happy Anniversary. Thomas had exquisite taste in basses and guitars. He wanted players to have them, and I'm certain he is delighted to see you with it today. :)
-
He did indeed and I am extremely honoured that he chose me to be the new owner after noting how much Interest I had in that bass. Respect to him.
-
Wow, has it really been nine years! Time does indeed seem to fly!
Bill, tgo
-
Beautiful bass, Jazzyvee! :)
-

Hi Bill did you get my recent email?
-
Not long got home from my first gig since the UK Covid-19 lockdown early last year and it was also my first full gig on double bass. (Classico). I had a great time and some pleasing comments on my playing. Still a lot of work to do but i survived with my dignity in tact and a lot of interest in this bass.
-
Very nice, and it looks like you ended up using a full rig with it?
-
I used a small rig, my 1x12 cab and my F-1-x powered rig.
-
I used a small rig, my 1x12 cab and my F-1-x powered rig.
Cool shot, Barefaced cover visible in the upper left, the Classico probably sounded great through the Big Baby II. I imagine you are going to have to get used to fielding a lot of questions about the bass whenever you gig with it. Are there any video clips of this gig?
-
Stephen, actually from what I was told by a couple of bass players, it sounded fine in the venue but from where I was standing it was far too bassy which made it hard for me to tell if I was on or close to the right pitch so hopefully muscle memory was working well.
If have time to soundcheck next outing I will try to get a good sound that works for me and the venue as the settings were closer to what I would use on a regular gig than specifically for a DB.
Early last year before lockdown I went to see a band "Dominic Aldis Trio" and their double bass player was using a Big Baby II on a full acoustic DB and that sounded great so it is possible with some experimenting. I have been toying with the idea of getting one of those new "EBS Stanley Clarke Acoustic bass Preamps" both for this bass and as a portable preamp when I have to use a backline provided on any of my bass gigs then I can go straight into the power amp section of any bass rig.
I have done one or two tracks with it on two other outings and those did get a lot of interest.
if there are any video clips that are up to scratch I will post links. :-)
-
Perhaps a 110 is a better match for the Classico.
-
Yep Rob it has been suggested to me before that a 1x10 with a compact class D bass head would be fine.
I got a used Schertler Unico from an online auction earlier in the year and I took for a service straight after buying it. I'm still waiting for that to come back and hoping that will be all I need. I think it has an 8" Woofer and 1" dome tweeter.
-
A photo from last night's gig at Camp Bestival. Hope the official photos appear soon.
-
Here is a snippet from the gig taken but a friend of the band who drove the van down to the gig.
The bass was Di through a Markbass rig but i expect most of the sound is coming from the stage side fills. The bottom end sounds sweet though. Headphones or decent speakers are needed to hear it properly.
-
Sounds Fantastic, Jazzy. Nice venue too! 8)
-
Nice transition!
My wife heard this while I was listening and asked who it was. I said it is one of the guys from the Alembic Club, Jazzyvee he plays in Musical Youth, she was “What!?” ???
Pass the Dutchie was her jam when it first came out! 8)
-
A short video clip with my Classico from this afternoon's gig.
-
Nice job holding that little pocket together Jazzy. And extra points for the FAN at the hot afternoon outdoor upright gig!
-
Thanks, it was a nice gig and some of the tracks had me on the edge trying to transpose on the fly with unfamiliar tracks. Phew. It was a fun gig and by the second half most of the audience were on their feet dancing. Bass players in the crowd were really complimentary about both my playing and the sound which was described by one as Authentic, smooth and classy.
-
Yeah, Jazzy, great Donato!
-
Not a great picture of my Epic, but definitely my favorite picture of me playing it.
For me this is what it's all about - jamming with a close friend, pictures are 27 years apart
-
That's great, Shark. I had a similar deja-vu moment Friday night with a couple old buddies of mine. We were running the roads together playing music all the way back in the early 90's. Had a 3-hour bar gig together the other night. 30 years on, still a blast, every time.
(pics of us are from gigs a couple years ago, but recent... wish I had some of us from back then. Someone probably does...)
-
Hey Greg, that hollow-body bass in your first photo looks lovely.
-
There is magic in long term musical relationships.
Congratulations to both of you!
-
Just this minute discovered the video I did with Musical Youth earlier on in the year. The track was recorded for the current album "When Reggae Was King" and I played my black maple Europa 5 bass. The song originally was recorded live at a showcase gig at a local music college theatre. However there was a lot of spill into the mics and other technical issues everything was re-recorded in the studio except my bass line which was DI'd so came out in tact and clean. :-)
I only used the classico for the video because.... well.... why not. :-)
Enjoy.
-
Cool, Jazzy! The Classico looks great! And, if I'm not mistaken, isn't that also your laser engraved Strat in the video?
Bill, tgo
-
Well spotted Bill, it is the same one. It seemed appropriate for a Wailers track and the guitarist was ok about using it for the video shoot as he also is a strat player.
-
We just watched your video Jazzy; loved it! Though it could have used more screen time for that bass. :)
-
Yea Jazzy, that's a cool vid.. sounds great!
-
Awesome!
-
[forwarded] to my bandmates in HGB. Well Done. 8)
I wish we could do a vid, but I shudder to think of what Josh might do if he knew he was on TV... he's a loose enuff cannon on a live stage. ::)

You should do one it was good afternoon of fun in a break in the covid lockdown and the video crew were a great bunch of people.
Hope we get to do more.
-
Very nice kind of modern take on that one, Jazzyvee! :)
-
In case anyone is concerned. "No Sheriff's were harmed during the making of this video". ;D ;D ;D 8)
-
But what about the deputies?
Bill, tgo
-
Great video and music!
-
Here is another pic from behind the stage at the last gig I did with my quartet in October 2019 at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. Our next gig is in April.

Great shot Jazzy!

This is with a band that is still going Roy and the Saracens playing a mixture of songs from 1950s to 70s and 80s - Telstar (Tornadoes), Oh Carol (Neil Sedaka), Beatles, Georgie Fame, Spencer Davis and Moody Blues etc. The line-up on this photo is left to right Mark Griffiths (guitar) covering for Jules Hunt (keyboards) - Mark played bass on tours with Cliff Richard, The Shadows, Everly Brothers (reunion gig) and is equally at home on bass or guitar, then me, then Alan Savage (drums) did all the Des O'Connor shows and loads of TV/sessions etc. At front is Alan Wakeman (cousin of Rick and was in Soft Machine). Then the leader on guitar at the right, Roy Hawkesford. Roy formed this band to re-create his band of the same name that played in Birmingham many, many years ago. Jazzy, you may know some of these people. We all live in Northamptonshire now.
Ah - good times with my trusty Alembic.
-
And one more with the John Dunmore Boogie band playing Louis Prima and blues/boogie.
-
Now with photo
-
Sorry - can't seem to resize the John Dunmore photo.
-
... Roy and the Saracens ...
Nice picture of the group!
-
Brought my Elan to a gig my band did a little while ago 8)
-
Nice shots; the black and white is especially nice.
-
Yeah great looking bass, do you have any clearer pictures of the bass that you can share on here?
-
Cool pics, bet you are psyched to be back out there playing again! :)
-
A bit clearer picture maybe, next to the other alembics. The Orion have a new home now, did not get so much use since I prefer the slim neck on the Elan.
And yes, looks like it will be more and more gigging after all the covid lockdown`s the past years, so exited about the future :D
-
Very nice, and the koa top on that spoiler is super cool! :)
-
My favourite there is the elan, the finish with light and dark contrast woods is one of my favourites. All great basses.
-
I remember that bass from the KC inlay. :) It's a sweet one.
-
Yes that inlay seemed familiar to me too.
-
Here are a couple of pics from last night's gig. Series II Europa 5 and Classico
Forgive the untidy stage, we were having problems with the PA at soundcheck then we had to start bang on time before we could clear our baggage from the stage area.
-
Nice to see you using the Twin!
-
Looks like fun! Do you run mono through an F-1X and SF-2 into the BB2?
-
I was using In-2, to my SF-2 into the F-2B then power amp. i was using a mono setup.
i planned to use my Stanley Clarke acoustic preamp but there were problems with the pa so plugged into bass rig. The settings weren't right but had to get on with the gig.
-
Im so happy seeing everyone getting the change to play and share music again.
-
A couple more came in from my last gig.
One of the trademarks of this photographer is her angled photos.
-
Lookin' good with that Classico there, Jazzy. 8)
-
Nice shots, Jazzy!
-
Best shots I have seen so far, Jazzy. Nice creative camera work that serves the subject and the photographer.
-
Here's a shot from last Friday in Telluride, CO. Sadly, the mountains aren't in the shot, but the second picture shows them. This marks 30 years of playing gigs in Telluride.
-
Nice, I love Telluride! :)
-
Nice pics, Edwin!
-
Here's the view from the stage.
Sadly, the neck pickup died during this show.
-
Nice festive crowd, looks fun :)
-
Love that stage shot! So many happy faces.
-
Great crowd shot!
The only time I was there was '79 for the jazz festival. Wondering how the town has changed since then. Guessing the vibe will have changed to some degree over 43 years, though that street looks quite similar to what I remember.
-
Finally gigs started to happen for real!
-
Wow, Goran, that looks cool, congratulations on getting back out there! :)
-
Nice venue, Goran!
-
Thanks you so much guys! It was a blast!
-
Looks fabulous. What and where was the venue?
-
It's a venue here in my home town (Zagreb, Croatia) played with a band was/is really famous here. They formed in 1969 way before I was born... 😀
-
Alembic Exploiter, maybe '83? Can't remember.......HAHAHAHA!
-
Nice!
-
A couple of pics i found on FB from last night's gig a Reggaeland in Milton Keynes, UK.
Burl Redwood Series I Europa 5 was providing the bottom end.
-
Nice action pics. :)
-
Nice pics Jazzy. Did you bring your Barefaced cabs or just the SF-2 and a power amp and use a provided backline cab?
-
Nice shot looking out at the audience.
-
I took my barefaced Big twin II and used it in preference to the ampeg fridge and eden head.
-
Good move, I hate using anything made by Ampeg, not my sound. Weird they paired the "fridge" with an Eden head. BTII probably sounded excellent for this gig.
-
Last night's gig at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
You can just about see the top and tail of my series II europa.
Just posted the video on youtube earlier
Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iomi closed the event. Sadly didn't get a chance to meet them.

😎

The first picture looks like a man and his alembic on a huge stage..... My favourite of the pictures I have seen so far.

Yeah, that's a great shot. Love the jacket!
-
Great stuff man! Looks like a killer gig.
-
LOVE the jackets!
Bill, tgo
-
I'm still hoping for some personal close-ups with me and the bass but at the moment it seems that all the photographers were on the opposite side.
-
At entirely the other end of the spectrum…an outdoor show in a small outdoor venue on Gabriola Island with my brother and my best friend of some 48 years (we think of him as me new guy in the band, he started playing with us 47 years ago…)
-
Great photos, looks like a fun evening! :)
-
Got hold of a full frontal pic from the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony. Though not great quality but alembic where it should be. Stage front.
-
that is awesome!
-
Nice One!
-
Great picture!
-
Nice photo, looks like you are having fun! :)
-
Nice matching outfits! Classy.
-
Excellent!
-
Jazzyvee, I don’t see a guitar player, are you using two keyboard players instead?
-
Well spotted. So here's the the situation, our guitarist was on tour with another artiste he works regularly with, called Maka-B, and the saxophonist was away on a family holiday.
The keyboard player on the left,Michael Grant, is the band's original keyboard player and moved to Canada about 5 years ago so he came over for the gig. The other keyboard player, like myself are part of the core of the band.
-
Yes! The picture holds a lot of energy.
-
Playing my 1989 Zebra Wood Spoiler at a lovely openair-concert in Günzburg/Bavaria/Germany.
-
Nice action pics!

And here´s another one from a gig yesterday - unfortunately a little unclear

Nice pics!

Love that zebrawood.
-
Me too!
Great pics
-
Nice photos (and zebrawood), looks fun! :)
-
Couple good ones from last night. My first gig with Who tribute Who's Who. Also first with my recently acquired Distillate Exploiter.
-
Nice shots! In the first picture, you appear to be floating a few inches off the floor; is that an effect of the Exploiter's tone?
-
Nice action pics, Tom!
-
Those are AWESOME!
You really are nailing the Ox vibe. And that bass certainly would/ could/ should make you float!
Thanks for sharing.
-

Haha! Yeah, those two 15s behind me got me airborne. ;)
-
as usual, a little late to teh party. this professional stoner lifestyle uses a lot of my bandwidth lately.
this totally makes my day. i'm [so glad that bass found a happy home and exposure to an audience! i think she was trying to tell me for a long time it was time for both of us to move on. and here i thought it was just me ;-)
-
Christmas Eve with my Original Alembic. My heart bass

Here is a picture i had drawn from one of the photos taken on the day. My partner's sister is a professional caricature artist and just before Christmas i asked her to interpret one of the photos taken on the day. I then had some copies made and gave one each to the band.
enjoy.
-
😎
-
Love it! Looks like a fun bunch to play music with too.
-
They are. I've been in the band as guitarist and bassist since late 2004. I did have a couple of years out when there was a reshuffle but then did a few gigs helping out on bass then got asked to stay.
-
Alembic bass. Avalon DI.
Eargasm.
-
Very nice, Songdog, does that have a maple core?
-
There's very little in this bass that's not maple! https://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=27285.msg279555#msg279555
It's incredibly responsive - it just seems like the notes come out faster than my other basses. And sustain for days. Is it the maple? Is it the electronics? In any case, it's a real delight to play. It sounds good through pretty much any amp. Hearing it through an Avalon U5, Neve console, and some nice headphones... well, you all can probably imagine how incredible that sounded.
-
Very nice, sounds wonderful! :)

Me and "the Bishop" playing a sold out show with Who's Who at the Hobart Art Theater in Indiana last Friday.
-
Just did one transcription from Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Aymée Nuviola : Viento Y Tiempo album, song is El Güararey de Pastora
So you can hear how beautiful bass sounds.
-
Excellent sir!
-
Wow, killer playing! That was really enjoyable.
-
Sounds great, Goran, beautiful bass! :)
-
Sounds like you and AM-107 are getting along famously, Goran. Great playing.
-
From our BLAK29 video shoot for our next single "Blackout"
-
Nice photo and bass, those Excels are big basses! :)
-
Great shot Danno!

Me playing my 1980 Series 1, opening for Mayday with HUSH. 😍

Nice shot Jack!

Cool photo, where is it from?

My first gig with this series bass having wrestled it back from my son who has been 'looking after it' for a few years.

Cool photo, where is it from?
Its from a recent show I played in Kaohsiung Taiwan
-
Picure, must be cool to play a stadium like that!
Phil, looks good, but does George know you snuck the bass out for a gig? :)
-
My first gig with this series bass having wrestled it back from my son who has been 'looking after it' for a few years.
Cool picture Phil, and a cool bass. Clearly that big Spyder he has guarding his basses didn't faze you. :-)
-
Aah the pieces have come together for me. Phil is GeePee’s Dad. 😎
-
Great to see you back again, Jack! And nice to see 1687 is working on some BIG stages. That bass is well-traveled. 8)
-
Yes, I'm GeePee's dad. I bought the series 1 from Pierre Yves a few years ago and converted it to have CVQ. When we left the UK I didn't trust the shipping company with it so I left it with George for safekeeping. When I started gigging again he brought it over. I also bought a Zebrano Orion 5 string fretless. Nice bass. Everytime I go back he has acquired another one or two. I'm looking forward to sorting out his latest 6 string Elan when I'm over in the UK later this month.
-

Thanks a lot! Yes I have been using the 1687 for my last tour with with HUSH. But lately I am reluctant to take it on the upcoming tours to China because a friend of mine had his acoustic guitar destroyed by the airlines while playing in China recently. I did tour China before the pandemic with my Alembic in a Reunion Blues Continental gig bag, and sending it into the cargo hold of the planes we took. It survived, but I’m not so sure about doing that now 😂

Revolver Magazine is premiering BLAK29's new video for "BLACKOUT" off our release "The Waiting" on Tuesday April 25th.
Warning, there is a very attractive lady featured in this along with my Alembic Custom Excel 5 with Europa electronics and my new Signature Flaxwood guitar in black.

Well here is a twist on the thread. The story is this, the neice of my other half had to do a project to submit for her school 'A' level art exam, and decided to do a picture based on two photographs her mum took of me maybe a year ago.
I had seen a photo of a really early version which was more or less sketched out but not painted in.
Well she finished the picture last week and invited me to her school to see the picture, so i popped over on Friday after work with my guitar. It's her first ever oil painting and the first time i have had my portrait painted and it still feels strange.
The strings are the bronze ones from my acoustic bass guitar and the music is a snippet from a score she found on-line from Musical Youth's song "Pass the Dutchie".
I'm planning to buy the picture from her after her exam and the exhibition in the school. I'm so proud of her, such a talented young lady.
-
That turned out REALLY nice. The extra vibration in the strings makes it 'sing'!
-
Recording at Studio 44 in Sebastopol with my Excel 4. My favorite bass, EVER.
-
Is that a single or two pickup Excel?
-
It has two Fatboys, and Europa controls. It's PERFECT ! The previous owner I guess was a Metallica fan and blacked it out, but the fretboard is indeed Pao Ferro, which I love the blossoming of notes.

Very cool portrait Jazzy!

Such a nice portrait! Beautiful!

Nice shot Jack!
-
Here is a clip from our gig last night at Party in the Park Festival, Newport Wales
I think you will recognise the song. I'm using my new Orion 5 string.
-
awesome!
-
That will be the same lineup for our tour in the USA next month. Although the keyboard player will be the original band member who now lives in Canada.
-
A shot from this afternoon's set at Pennfest 2023 in Buckinghamshire.
-
Great!
-
Looks like a very nice stage, but looks really strange to see everyone in hats and jackets. :D
-
Well, it tipped down with rain on and off all day. So everyone was taking precautions.
-
First time playing my SII in public with my new band The Desert Sons AKA: All Shirt, No Cattle. Hot and dusty, a splendid evening for some cosmic country rock!
-
Ya'll sound great!
-
Nice playing and a great sound you are getting from your bass.
-
Very nice, sounds great, beautiful bass! :)

That tone is stellar @hdfixer
-
Thank you so much for the kind comments.
It's worth mentioning that contributing to the great tone my rig for the gig was a Bergantino B|Amp into a Bergantino HG410. Very accurate setup, perfect for Alembics, lightweight and relatively compact as well.

There is a lot of love over at UK Basschat for Bergantino bass cabs. I have never tried one myself.
-
That sure is a nice looking bass!

Just got a photo through from my gig last weekend at Pennfest 2023 in Buckinghamshire. Had to take My Series I Burl Redwood Europa 5.

Soundcheck last night in Redmond Seattle. However it looks more like i am “sleepless in Seattle”
After soundcheck one of the sage crew came over as he noticed my bass was an alembic. Said he didn’t know there were modern versions.

I see Ampeg as your back line……

Looking good, Jazzyvee, looks like a nice place to play :)

I see Ampeg as your back line……
Well, i just decided to use whatever was available which happened to be two ampeg rigs. The bass was in a di box so the rig was only a monitor and visual thing. Tonight’s gig in at the Sandy Ampitheatre in Utah had a choice of two modern ampeg heads with vintage looking cabs. They sounded OK.

I don't think I posted this pic from February, but I ran across it the other day and thought it was worth sharing. Hobart Art Theater in Indiana.
-
I would love a reason to buy one of those as an 8 string or a spyder 8 but i don't have any gigs to use an 8 string.
Such a cool bass.
-
Nice photo, Gearhed289, looks fun and beautiful bass! Bet you felt the bass with those speakers too! :)

Playing my S2 on a gig last March.

Tom and Stefano, great stage shots!

I spy a Fenderbird.
The smoke effect is cool.

Cool photo, Stefano, nice looking bass as well :)

"Bet you felt the bass with those speakers too! :) "
Haha, yeah! I like the bass loud, and playing in a Who tribute band, nobody complains about it. ;D My favorite with these guys is my '71 Ampeg BT-140 2x15 cab with JBL D140s. But I'd asked some friends that have played that venue, and was warned about a tricky little staircase to get on stage, so I brought my custom built (by me) combo with a JBL K140 and an old TL-606 cab with an EVM15L stacked on top. Run off of an Ampeg SVT III Pro.
"I spy a Fenderbird."
Yup! Someone gave me the body back around 2005, and I eventually acquired parts and pieces to complete it about 2 years later. It's slightly crude, but sounds great with Gibson TB+ pickups. And it's a real conversation piece.
Stefano, nice shot. Good to see Alembics in the wild!

Finally getting around to share a few interesting shots... a few month back, my band, Fleetwood Mask, was asked to launch a fundraiser at the Sausalito Record Factory Studio, formerly known as the Sausalito Record Plant. Lots of SF Bay Area rock royalty recorded there... Fleetwood Mac, Santana, Metallica, Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder, Grateful Dead, etc. We set up in Studio B, I had a showcase of John McVie's amps and instruments, and I have 3 Alembics... 73 Series 1 SN43, Continuously fretted Series 2, and the Penguin Porpoise bass. The Lakland was McVie's main stage guitar from 2009 - 2019, along with that rack of Orange and Ampeg amps and cabinets. Good Times in NorCal...

From the maiden gig of “Dead Enough” last month. Also color coordinated guitar/shirt. I’m playing a guitar I put together with an old Modulus Blackknife neck, Flame Koa over Black Korina Warmoth body, and Alembic Strat set PUs and electronics with added Q-switch.

Hi Alembic fanatics,
I don't get to gig the 8 much but when I do, buildings and tents vibrate like they should!

Hi Thanks! I'm playing with the Hayley Griffiths Band here. We have a UK tour in October which I'm looking forward to. It's tricky music though.

i will watch for some dates in or close to Brum.👍🏾🎶🥳
Seems like you are close at the Robin 2 in Bilston, (where i saw Jimmy J playing with Allan Holdsworth), or The Stables in Milton keynes.

Not great sound quality by here it is starting about 07:00
It was our gig at the Honda Centre Orange County Ca.
At the Greek Theatre
-
Just a snippet of a good old jam in E minor with the Distillate Exploiter. ;D
-
At the end of my practice session learning some new tracks for a dep gig. I had a go at recording my refurbished Elan 4 bass on my ipad along with a no bass backing track.
Josie by Steely Dan.
The bass is strung with new D'addario Chromes.
-
Hi Vince! Senior Management and I just watched the video. She said to tell you it was “truly lovely”, (said with a British accent), and to give both our regards to your S.M. The bass line sounded most excellent!
Bill, tgo

Thanks I can now actually picture you both in your sitting room watching on the large TV. My regards to both of you and i will pass on the message.

That refinish with the cream pickups was a very good call, Jazzy. Nice job with the tune too.

Beautiful bass and excellent playing, JV!

Great stuff Jazzy. Those guys wrote some very sophisticated music that somehow resonated with a wide ranging audience.

Nice ... and an interesting opportunity to listen to the bass line out front like that. If I didn't have to go outside and work some more on removing leaves from the driveway I would look up the chord progression and study it while listening to your video again.

Proudly pleased was I thus indeed to play ,mine Alembic Bass at The Sweetwater .The music hall of much highest esteem . On Sunday the nineteenth of November. 'Twas a joyous occasion to behold
-
Very nice. Is that an epic?
-
DistillaMato Mine is a 1992 Essence with brass block ,Cue switch & dual trim pot pan mod .As well as my Alembic, there was a guitarist on stage with me, who played his Alembic Tribute guitar .( opposite side of the stage )
-
Hey, Wolf. Who were you playing with?
Bill, tgo
-
Bill . My old friend , Drummer Brian Melvin got the gig with a long cast of invited players that he contacted to perform with him , I was asked to play 4 Dead tunes out of his lineup of musicians. Brian had introduced me to Jaco Pastorius ,back in the days when he was gigging with him .:)
-
Great photo, Wolf, looks like fun :)

Great pictures everyone. Makes me wish I was gigging....
wonder if there are any bands that are done performing by 8:00pm?
-
Thanks for the pictures; I always enjoy the pics in this thread!
-
Agreed with the previous two posts! Gig pics are awesome - the other "stuff" whether bass related (like amps, effects, etc.) or gig related or room related - points to the various dimensions of playing!
-
Hiya folks,
For those that don't use Facebook, you might like this. I took my 8 string to a Prog gig - the gig was with the Hayley Griffiths Band. Overall, pretty decent gig and I had fun using this beast. Luckily it was a good thing I took this one because my DW bass' battery started to go before the set ended. Phew, saved the gig and nobody knew. WIN!
Anyway, cheers!

You are better than the guy I was trying to learn the riff from on youtube somewhere. Especially the finger trills.

Thanks guys! There are a couple of deviations from the record, but I play it pretty close, trying to keep the "signature" riffs intact.

"great that the bass is up in the mix!"
The sound guy at that venue is a bass player that I'm friendly with, so I knew I was in for a good night. ;D Plus it's a Who tribute, so I don't often get yelled at for being a little generous with the stage volume. 8)

Familiar shapes, recurring themes...

Last gig:

Moving pictures with sound (way too loud bass) ::) ;D

Nice action pic FC. 8)
See... it's just impossible to look badass when you play bass in an oldtyme string band. (you can still sound badass though...) ;D

Yes, a great action pic indeed!

Live yesterday. I've heard of guitar face before but "Bass Face"?
-
Bass Face is real. I genuinely believe you groove better whilst making Bass Face.
Paul (who believes Face can be a range of contortions from mild to wild)
-
I'm not actually playing it, but I thought this was a cool pic with my Distillate Exploiter in it. Taken at the beautiful recording studio where my new-ish original band Doctor Crypto ( https://www.facebook.com/doctorcryptochicago (https://www.facebook.com/doctorcryptochicago) ) rehearses and records - Pressure Point Studios in Chicago's south loop. We're finishing tracking of 7 new tunes tonight. I used the Alembic on 4. The other 3 are 8 string Ric. That's our keys/2nd guitar guy Rodney behind the Kurzweil.

From a festival gig last night with a Bob Marley tribute band
-
Nice action shot! And the pants are cool!
-
Thanks, the pants came from your side of the pond when i was on tour last summer. This was the first time i'd worn them since buying them.
-
Jazzy I have to state the obvious. The overwhelming majority of us could never pull off wearing those pants. However, you do it with ease, grace, and a coolness that makes me jealous. And I'm not just suggesting that most of us couldn't pull it off today because our age. We couldn't do it regardless of the number of time we've been around the sun. 8)
-
From last night, first gig I also used another bass than the SII since I got it a year ago :-)
-
It was great weather here this weekend, but possibly one of the last warm weekends of the year, so I set up a (ridiculous) Wall of Sound / Phil Lesh tribute while I still could.

Wow that's a great collection of barefaced cabs. I've moved over to their 12' speaker cabs a few years back and they are superb. Best cabs i've ever played bass through.
-
Thanks Jazzy! Totally agree, their 12" ones are probably my preference too. I've seen your BF rig in another post; looks awesome.
They're great for guitar as well! Since they're FRFR, you can run anything through them, just depends what preamp/modeler/amp you use.
The 10" line is great too, just more specific to bass.
And the low weight... wow, what a difference between them and pretty much any other cabs I've played through; it's terrific. Even just setting up that photo with anything other than BF would have probably sent me straight to the chiropractor (or the hospital) ;D
-
I quite fancy a used One10T cab to make a compact practice and rehearsal setup with my old mesa walkabout head. What is your impression of one with an alembic, and what configurations of your cabs make up your main gigging setup?
-
Great shots Flip!
And nice mini wall of sound Mike!
-
Many thanks David!
Jazzy, that's exactly what the One10T is excellent for - a (very) compact and lightweight cab that is perfect for practice / playing alone. Depending on the music you're playing, it can be plenty for even a band/gig situation. E.g. if you're playing in a small-to-medium room with an expectation for low-ish volume, like many bars/restaurants - especially without a drummer or with lower-volume drums, like in a jazz trio. Let's be honest, we bassists are constantly getting asked to turn down anyway, or at least I am ;D
It has a reputation for being super-loud for its size, and that's true, at least in comparison with traditional cabs/combos. E.g. my old 1x10" Peavey combo only got ~half as loud, and easily weighed 2-3x as much as a One10T + a modern compact Class D amp like a TE Elf. It is just SO easy to carry.
BUT, don't expect miracles; it might possibly be the best 1x10" cab in the world, but it's still just a single 10" speaker. Not surprisingly, low bass frequencies are where it reaches its limits first. So it also depends a bit on what you need out of it. For someone who plays with deep, heavy bass, maybe no 1x10" is enough. But for, say, a Jaco-style bridge pickup player, it might have headroom to spare. I would say it's NOT quite loud enough to keep up with a typical rock drummer by itself, just to give an idea of its limit.
The more "built-in" sound is GENERALLY great for bass, which works well if you're playing through an amp/modeler without a cab sim. I DO recommend the tweeter. It's not absolutely essential, but I love the flexibility, and it really bridges the gap toward a Big Baby 3. Turning it up even halfway is like taking off a blanket. As an Alembic player, I'm guessing a player like yourself might appreciate the ability to open up that range a bit - at least when you want to. The high-frequency dispersion doesn't seem quite as good as a BB3, but again, it's fine for a tiny cab at a significantly lower cost.
-
so i got hooked up with a singer-songwriter and his drummer friend who wanna play some gigs in the mile high so here we are at rehersal #2 last night. got a 6 song show to play next weekend downtown so i'll be packing the MKD and my small amp. i'm at the total antipode of playing in yet another cover band so it's kinda refereshing. we might actually make it to a stage in this one. these guys trek up from colorado springs to rehearse in denver, dunno how long that's gonna last so i'm gonna roll widdit until the wheels fall off
-
Good luck with the gig.

The lights make it look like I've got cool blue inlays. 8)

Cool indeed!

awesome picture. compliments to the photog! 8)
-
i only got a coupla video screen captures from the guy videoing this gig, they all turned out blue, this is the only one that you can tell i'm holding an alembic. in this case the mighty Mark King Deluxe backdropped with my favorite tie-dye. this shot's the best of the lot. sigh...
-
Actually, it's kinda neat!
-
That is actually very cool!
-
thanks y'all, you're really too kind. I only got 4 stills from this gig, here's one of the whole band. i'm backing a quirky singer-songwriter and his drummer buddy. i'm sure i'm older than both my bandmates combined, i just don't know by how much. i must be a cover band burnout. this is a refreshing change from performing the same old tired songs that i've been doing since the mid-70's in some cases so i'm gonna roll widdit until the wheels fall off. for completeness i included a portrait of the grizzled old bass player practicing his craft in front of an actual audience. my buddies liked this one for some reason.

That blue shade to the pictures feels calm/ comfortable.

Here I am last Sunday playing my Alembic 1984 Series I outdoors at the NYC Marathon.
The funniest part is that our keyboardist ran the marathon for 18 miles, joined us for two songs, and then went on to finish the race!
A video of it went viral:

Cool!

Indeed - very cool.

Jammin in my jammies! ;D I recently landed a gig with a great progressive hard rock band based here in Chicago called the Cyberiam. This is the most rhythmically challenging stuff I've ever had to learn and commit to memory, and the songs tend to be on the longer side, with many different parts. We've been doing silly stuff on Facebook to try and get as many people as we can to my first show with them next Friday, December 18th at Durty Nellie's in Palatine, IL. This is a short part of their song Wilde Things (the lyrics are all based on Oscar Wilde quotes). I probably should have turned up the volume because you can hear a lot of the acoustic sound of the bass. Anyway, check it out. I'm about 90% there...
-
Very nice. Sounds like you got it! 👍🏼
-
Excellent. Digging the wall art.
-
Congrats on the gig!
-
Some videos I recently popped onto You tube Covering some tracks by Doobie Brothers and Gerry Rafferty.
Stuck in the Middle with you ( Koa Series II Shorty)
Listen to the Music (Elan 4 Plus)
Long Train Running.(Elan 4 Plus)
The doobie brothers tracks were recorded whilst learning both tracks as a music agency fairly local to where I live was trying to put together a Doobie Brohers tribute band for a theatre tour. However before i'd grasped the songs the places were filled.
-
Listening to Long Train Running; sounds great!
-
YouTube won't let me watch on my browser, but that Elan looks great in the new natural finish. Especially with the cream/white pickups. Very good call there. 8)

Not just your browser, honestly. On the “Video unavailable“ message, just click the Watch on YouTube link, and let it take you to the YT site or app, where the clip should start playing.

I guess there was an option i missed when uploading the files.

Got to take out the good ol’ S1 out for a spin today. Cant really remember the last time I gigged with her because I am so reluctant to take her out on tour 😆

Cool!

Lookin' good Jack! That backdrop is hard to look at though. 😄

That was very nice! And an interesting piece.
Oh, and apparently a nice venue as the audience was quiet and paying attention.
-
Rocking the Rogue 8)
That sounded great. Appreciate the juxtaposition of busy drums against the melodic bass/key interludes.
-
Happy to hear that!
The venue was small, but really nice, indeed! It featured a Boesendorfer Imperial Concert Grand 290, which sounded absolutely amazing in the room.
We were there as a pre-band for the Ron Minis Trio (...crazy guys) ...not to bad for some hobby-musicians trying to promote their music ;-)
-
Very Nice :)
-
Well, it's not MY Alembic, but I'm playing it. 8) This just popped up as a Facebook memory from 2016. Sitting in for a song with my former classic rock cover band 97Nine with guitarist and educator EXTRAORDINAIRE, Dr. Dave Uhrich. The bass is a 36'' scale Rogue 5 with a mini heart omega. What a beast!
-
Nice!

Another from Steely Dan Peg also on my Elan.

Stuck in the Middle with You on Series Ii Europa.

Steely Dan again FM ( No Static)

Steely Dan, Home at last.
For many years, as far back as I can remember, I almost always select this track on my car stereo once I get off the motorway after a long distance gig.
-
Playing my Series II bass in Berkeley, CA with Stu Allen and Mars Hotel last night. We covered the 4/1/88 Grateful Dead show from the Meadowlands Arena. Band really ripped it up, fun to reconnect with Stu and my first gig using my re-configured Bareface rig.
-
a fine looking instrument, sir!
🗿
-
Not only fine looking but I get lots of comments about how amazing it sounds. Series II electronics and an ebony neck laminate is a hard combo to beat.
-
Looks good, Stephen, beautiful bass. What is your new rig configuration?
-
I was using a 2x12 Barefaced Supertwin with a single 12” Big Baby 2 on top, same Eden pre, superfilter and Crest Prolite 3.0. The Supertwin was so much louder than the BB2 and lacks the horn that the BB2 has so the rig sounded out of balance and was missing the clarity and sense of air I wanted from the high end. The BB2s have a wider frequency response low and high, I wanted a rig that sounded as similar to playing through a PA as possible and the two BB2s get me much closer.
-
That’s great, I use one BB2 or two of them when I need more volume, I really like them. I’m also using a Prolite 3.0 and an F-2B (when not using a Walter Woods amp). I like the Barefaced big Baby cabs.
-
Another Barefaced user here. I generally use the Big Twin 2 as my main cab and BB2 for smaller gigs. They are a great match with my alembics.
-
Series II electronics and an ebony neck laminate is a hard combo to beat.
+1 on that
-
1979, somewhere in LA. I'm behind Susie, who we'd just finished a song about ("she's an inflatable dream...").
My rig is behind the guitarist - 2 alembic (pre bag end) 15" cabs, with a 2x12 on top, crown and HH amps in the rack, F2b. There's another 15 and 2x12 off camera somewhere. Moved a lot of air. I really miss the sound. On the other hand, about 4 years after that I had back surgery. Related? :)
-
My Custom fretless, 8 years to the day after my first gig with it, (June 12th, 2017 ) Chains went on yet another. Nothing special, at least not to anyone but me. Very special to me, every time I get to play this one, especially with these folks.
-
i took the ebony amazon along for our 4th of july show. anybody looks cools with a series II strapped on!
-
Nice shirt!

This is from one of two videos that my band the Cyberiam just shot. The song was actually recorded with my Distillate Exploiter, but I thought my newly acquired Spoiler had a better vibe for the video. I don't know why, LOL. I believe this will be released September first.
-
A short video I got sent from my gig a couple of weeks back
The bass is really heavy in the mix as the video was recorded in front of those huge subs in front and under the stage.
-
Here's the pit orchestra for "9-5" the musical. Europa 6 string and a double bass stashed in the corner. Great sounding group, this is SO much fun!

I bet that would be a fun one. What selection(s) is the upright used on?
-
It's about a quarter of the show, maybe?
"Here for You"--the "Mr. Hart" theme
"Backwood Barbie"--little two step diddy
The fantasies of the female leads when they get stoned. Three tunes, "Dance to Death", "Cowgirls Revenge" and "Potion Notion". Then segue into the finally "Joy to the Girls"
"One of the Boys" and the playoff
Super fun show!! The band gets to play along with a recorded track of Dolly singing a verse and chorus of "9-5" in the show finally!

Powerful photos Flip.

Flip got the “bass face” happening! 😎
Daniel, the band looks great.
Played in a Pit for one run - without a doubt it was both terrifying AND exhilarating at the same time.

Great shots!

FC is a scary dude for such a friendly fella'... just part of the gig I reckon. 😊
Of course you can't play a badass black Series II Europa and have my goofy grin... that just wouldn't sell. 🤣

Nice photos, FC, bet it sounds great! Just wondering, how did you attach your Alembic patch to your strap?
-
:-) Thanx all!
The patch is attached through heat, the surface of the strap is leather. https://store.turbify.net/alembic/darknesspatch.html "heat seal backing can be ironed on" :-)

Some photos from the Axial Tilt show at Great American Music Hall Sunday August 3 “Celebrating 60 Years of the Grateful Dead”. Super busy music weekend in San Francisco. Jay Lane came by to play the last set with us but Gabe had left by midnight and didn’t get any shots with him. Nice surprise for the audience… here is one to get things rolling. The online gallery has lots of photos many with “Alembic” content. I had a good time talking all things Alembic with John Kadlecik, he told me a lot about working with Ron on the electronics for his Orion guitar build. Our side of the stage was running on Alembic power…

Great photos, Stephen, it must have been a fun night! 😊

Thanks for sharing. Really does look spectacular.

Yes, great pictures!
Did not realize (or perhaps just don't remember) that Osborne plays drums.

Gig was exhausting but lots of fun, feel blessed to have the opportunity to play with great musicians in such a beautiful venue. I didn’t realize Joan played drums until she sat down and started playing. Doubt that her playing drums was planned, the second kit was set up in case Jay actually made it across the city after his show with DeadCo.
