I think that's fair enough for what you're getting here. At the barebones, it's a simple circuit bass, and a set-neck, but there's a bunch of really cool custom options too that make it attractive. I bet you could not order it new for that. It looks basically unplayed. 

With all the outboard filters on the market now too, I don't know that I'd be put off of an Alembic without a filter circuit anymore. 

Forgive my ignorance of the finer points of electronics but is there a theoretical or real difference between how filter based electronics work whether they are on board the bass and directly off the pickups or off the bass in a pedal/rack etc?

My (self-taught) understanding about "onboard" vs "pedal board" is that it's less critical because our instruments have active electronics.  Pickups put out a very low-powered signal.  On a passive instrument with high impedance pickups that can be a problem because the type and length of the guitar cable and the first component it's plugged into can load that system in unusual ways affecting the overall frequency response.  But because our pickups are literally inches from our first preamp (or "buffer" amp) the signal coming out of our instruments is much less vulnerable to that electrical "load" issue.

All that to say a Superfilter pedal, for example, should act essentially the same as if it was somehow all built into the instrument.
