I've been looking for recordings and shows with various iterations of a band I grew up listening to and often saw playing around here. Recently a friend of mine who was killed in a motorcycle accident that used to play with these guys put them back in mind. This is before his time, but he would have seen this and studied it well for the gig.

The guy playing banjo here... Gene Parker. One of the finest to ever pick up the instrument. Gene sometimes turns up at HBG shows. He's been a mentor to our banjo player Stewart, and countless more here in this part of Virginia. Virtually unknown outside of banjo-picker circles but a GIANT within. One of the most humble fellas around... won't take the mildest compliment.

One of Gene's signature tunes is this funny little banjo instrumental he wrote called "Struttin' To Ferrum" (Ferrum is a small rural community a few miles west of Rocky Mount on 40 in Franklin County Virginia). Here he is playing it back in the day-

And he got talked into a reprise at a birthday party I was at a couple years ago. He ain't lost a trick.

Listened to a whole bunch of Stanley at work today.
Rocks, Pebbles and Sand was the 2nd album of his that I purchased...forgot how good it was.

Opening track:

This is from If This Bass Could Only Talk, Freddie Hubbard's trumpet just climbs and climbs going into the 5:00 mark - goosebumps

I swear that is Jeff Beck playing the solo on "All Hell Broke Loose" the second track from Rock Pebbles and Sand but he's not credited. Maybe Charles Johnson was trying to sound like Jeff Beck.

A lot of the older vids seem to have not made the move.
I know this because the new site is showing a tendency to open to the first page of a thread rather the new posts.

Navigation has changed in some respects, we just need to get used to how it's working.

If you're on one of the index pages, to the right of each topic you have a link to the Last post on that topic.

At the top of each page, if you're logged in, there are links to Unread posts and Updated topics. If you have unread posts, the first link will show you those topics, and to the left of each topic a "new" flag that you can click to take you to the first unread post. The Update topics link will do something similar.

For all members and guests, at the bottom of the main index page under Forum stats, there is a link "View the most recent posts on the forum."

Not sure why just the link posted....
I tried posting the same link, and before I submitted the post I noticed there was a notification in the YouTube preview about the uploader not having allowed the content to be shown on other sites. I guess that's why this particular link did not magically pop the video preview.
