I just took delivery of this 1962 P Bass that I snagged out of an auction in June. It desperately needs a setup, but it is going to be a beast when I've got it dialed in.













It sustains like an Alembic, which I'm not used to in a PBass.

Nice.   I like the matched headstock Fenders. I saw a '66 Jazz in black with a matched headstock come through the store a while back. 

My tastes in Fender goods has always been skewed to the uncool ones though. I think the Fender bass I want is a '77 Telecaster in either Mocha or Antigua finish, that's been modified to have an added bridge pickup and a blend pot. I've actually got the Squier version of one, and never play it... so maybe there's a clue.

I have related here before how I helped Gary Krolak, bassist for Vanessa Davis Band, design a rework for his fretless P; while that one was off in the company of the great Ed Reynolds (then of Soundsmiths in Chicago, now of Ed Reynolds Guitars in Austin), Gary borrowed one of those from Mark Edelson (then bassist with Special Consensus Bluegrass Band).
One of the worst basses I've ever known, both playing- and tonewise!

I was just talking with a couple friends about the fact that Antigua finishes have finally become popular — we'd just seen a picture of Richard Hell with an Antigua Mustang Bass (something I don't know if I've ever seen before).

The Jazz Band Director in High School had a 62 P-Bass (unpainted headstock).
He would let me take it home to "practice"... that bass was a monster.

When I was in High School (1988 or so) the Jazz band's bass player had a 1958 Precision in blonde with an anodized guard. It was in terrific condition.

I still remember coveting that bass.
