The winner of the auction was Bobby Tseitlin of Family Guitars. Derek is a friend of Tseitlin and was sitting with him at the auction, and subsequently played the guitar for one song on stage with his band at the Beacon Theater a day later.
Thanks for the correction, I saw a video of the end of the auction and from the focus being on Derek, I thought he'd bought it. Apologies, I should have done more checking before posting.😳 🫣.
I'm all for these guitars ending up with benefactors who make sure they get played. Better still, where we can still hear them played.
I wonder who ended up with the McVie Alembic? If the same metrics apply, they got a steal at only $177,800...
I firmly believe every instrument Irsay had should have been passed out, free, one to a customer, to people who would gig them, regularly, whether in stadia & arenæ or in corner bars.
As billionaire hoarders go, he was not bad, but they're instruments; they're supposed to make music!
Peter (who make an exception to his rule if they want to give one to someone who only plays at home.........)

+1 on that. i have an SII that was arguably collector grade when i bought it, but an instrument that beautiful deserves to be played in public so it's been my road dog for the last few years that i have left. i guess my kids can deal with the tyre-kickers, looky-loos and low-ballers after i kick the bucket and hopefully some other
player gives it a good home with lotsa public appearances.
Agreed. My Distillate was near perfect when I got it, but it's not anymore; I don't abuse it but I do gig it and scratches and dings happen, oh well, gives them a life...hadn't thought about this before but it's very fitting that I have a Distillate as I am a home distiller, making yummy vodka...Tony
Yeah as much as I try, my Dragon Magic SI guitar has sadly become more like a collectors item rather than being used regularly to make music. :-(. Though I can't bring myself to sell it.
