First gig with a rock band....Yikes !!!
« on: May 26, 2012, 02:40:20 AM »
A friend of mine is off on tour in Europe for a few days and has asked me to dep for him on on bass for a gig with his regular band.

The band is called Kaliq and it's an interesting mixture of rock and Asian music, although some of the stuff has a Lenny Kravitz feel about it.

Here is a link to some of his stuff on sound cloud.

If you like his stuff you can link up with him on Facebook.

The gig the is at Diamond Jubilee Festival and Walsall Mela 02/06/2012

I think this is a gig for my purple Elan.

Now, how low should I hang my bass...!!

Had first and only rehearsal last night with the band and found out that the 7 tracks for the gig is not enough as they are actually doing an hour and a quarter set to headline that day at the festival. So I should get a stack more music sometime today to get  under my belt by Saturday.

At rehearsal, they were very happy with my playing and liked the fact that I had tried hard to keep my playing as close to the original as possible, so much that at times they thought it was their regular bass player which they said felt comfortable and not distracting.

So now they have confirmed that they want me to be their regular dep for the band, which is cool and should give me a few more interesting gigs to look forward to.

Did you use the purple Elan or the new SII?

I used the purple Elan at rehearsal as all the tracks I've had so far are playable easily on a 4 stringer. If the remaining tracks are suitable for 4 string also I will use that on the gig otherwise it will be the black Europa/Elan5.

Don't think this will be an outing for my new SII. I think
that will be at my own gig.  :-)

Hey Bill, I'm looking forward to it.. I still don't have a list of tracks for the gig yet and considering they are all originals it's worrying.

Ok I woke up to find 16 new tracks that have been sent to me overnight so it looks like I'm gonna be burning some midnight oil until Saturday...... I'll also have to have a go at transcribing stuff to paper then learn to sight read.  Yikes it feels like cramming for final exams.  However this time the audience will be the ones judging... :-)

Any cramming tips and tricks are welcome.

I always put songs I'm learning on a flash drive or my MP3 player & play them over & over in the car whenever I'm going to work or running errands. I visualize the notes as I listen to it once I have learned the song. Sometimes I even finger the rhythm patterns with my right fingers on the edge of the car seat to increase muscle memory in my picking fingers.  For me the hardest part is memorizing the song. Once I get the song in my head, the notes take care of themselves. Make sure you allow some time for rest. It won't matter how well you learn the songs if you are fatigued for the gig. Your mind needs to be rested & sharp to remember all the songs! 16 songs is a lot to learn in 3 days! Good luck!

Yeah Rusty, your methodology is the one i use a lot, as I used to be in the car a lot driving too and from work. Visualising playing the song is good one too. I've learnt a lot of tunes and techniques in the car. Slapping and double thumbing are a couple of things i've learnt on the edge of the steering wheel.
I agree completely with your post and I'll post back after the gig. Hopefully I'll be able to get some photo's from someone there too.

I too have done some slapping on the steering wheel! Great minds think alike! In my old truck the seat had a trim piece that was about the size of an E string, so it made for great right hand finger practice, especially for practicing timing on 3 finger triplets.

Good luck tomorrow V. Hope you have a great time. I have two wedding gigs so I have to be on my best behaviour - at least you can run about the stage :-)
