Just got back from the gig which went great. A good appreciative nostalgic crowd is always good to play for.  I took my Black Elan/Europa 5 for this gig.

Anyway I had an embarrasing moment on the encore to share with you.

We came back out to do the encore and singer did a lot of talking then the drummer rolled us in and as I proceeded to play the starting notes of the track.......yikes... NO SOUND from my bass. I had put it onto standby when we left the stage.
Although I was able to turn the bass off standby quickly, the singer pulled the ace saving graces of bad starts in reggae
The Wheel back  So we were able to re-start the track again in a stylistic way wiithout the audience being aware.... I hope.

Phew first time I've ever done that.  Anyone else started playing a live gig only to find their bass still on standby.

Do you have any examples of The wheel back or any further explanation on how to do this?  Sounds like something I might be using with some not always aware musicians I am playing with... :P

Well some people call it  REWIND basically its the musical equivalent of a DJ playing a record for a few seconds then spinning it backwards so that it starts again.  So it's used by reggae artistes when they hear something in the music that sounds wrong or want to use it as an effect for getting the crowd worked up when it's a really popular track they are playing.

It's more than likely derived from the technique used by the early sound system DJ's in jamaica. But I will ask some more knowledgeable musicians for the true origin of it.

Jazzyvee: Enlightening!  So... do I have to make it sound backwards, then? A-la-Bakhithi Kumalo! ;) The hard part will be telling the guys to learn to play the tune in reverse, as if it wasn't hard enough to make them aware enough to play it correctly forward

Just have a backwards sample cued up and ready to go. it doesn't matter what it is, as backwards sound is just cool!

For ease of use, if it were on a footswitch, you could even retrigger it in tempo.

I've heard this a bunch in reggae and also in hip hop.

Had another good gig with the band last night. No booboos with the switch this time so all was cool.
