Green Paint gig
« on: January 03, 2013, 08:00:24 AM »
My new band, Green Paint, is playing a four band show at the Penny Road Pub on Friday Jan. 18.

Green Paint is Lisa Sayers, Gregg Woods, Danny DeWitt, Gary Belniak  and me. We do a mix of covers and original tunes.

We'll be playing with good friends, various sit-ins and jams (most of the groups are Dead-friendly) ... this one's going to be a lot of fun. Hope to see you Saturday Friday January 18th at the Penny Road Pub in Barrington (west of Chicago).  Mike  [moderator's edit: correct date]  (Message edited by davehouck on January 10, 2013)

Have a great gig Mike. We couldn't get away with flyers as cool as yours over here - Scotland's too conservative :-(

Thanks Rusty and Graeme.
One of the guys from Mars Light posted the Penny Road poster as part of the Facebook notification, I don't know who created it. Gregg Woods designed the Green Paint flyer.
The day is Friday (as on the poster), not Saturday (I'm date challenged).

Well, they've now posted that the show will start at 7 rather than 8 pm, with a half hour break between each act. That means I'll still start at 9 pm, just the stage turnaround won't be a complete cluster*!^%&!.

Well, Green Paint did an outdoor freebie in Batavia IL last week. Their "Art In Your Eye" Festival included an Art In Your Ear stage, hosted by  Hix Brothers Music of the Aurora/Batavia area. Same lineup as above, but here are some daylight photos playing in the band shell:

You can see I'm using my fretted Epic with my Crate head and a single Acme Low B-2

Everybody but me sings, with Gregg doubling on second guitar and keys. We also had a guest sax player(Chris Eastwood) sit in for a couple of songs, but Chris was the photog, so no pix of him. ;) Mike

Mike,
Very cool !  Playing bass and singing is not all that easy, especially if you like to play counterpointal bass chops.

Nice pics, looks like a great gig.
What's the back story on the name, Green Paint?

Mike:

Looks like a fun gig.  But twin tuxedo strats?  Maybe you need to spread a little more Alembic mojo in the direction of your guitar players!  lol

Thanks guys for the kindly comments.

Wolf, I'm just a mediocre singer at best (my first good band in the 70's nicknamed me Cliff), although I do find singing weird harmony parts sometimes rewarding(e.g. the horn harmony on the intro to Home At Last).

Graeme, it was a beautiful day, warm enough in late September to make us sweat, but with a nice breeze. It was so bright none of us could see our headstock tuners once we got on stage. Luckily it was a tight single set and we were set up off stage before hand, so the stringed instruments didn't drift badly.

Paul, Green Paint was the last, desperate idea after months of each of us coming up with 5 names, submitting them,  and no one really digging any of them (Friends of Fife, Quantum Glass, Fine Food & Dining, etc). I believe it might refer to a controlled substance in many, lesser-aware territories. ;)

Bill, Gary (standing next to me) is a dive bomber with the whammy and a David Gilmore fan. He's got a nice Les Paul that appears about once a year, but Strats are his love. He also has a beautiful old sunburst that doesn't come out to shows much any more, a mid 50s with original P.A.F.  pickups. Gregg,(with the white vest) is a musical offspring of the 80s and has his Squirer (sic?) Strat outfitted with  a Roland VG pickup and plays exclusively thru an old Roland (VG8? it's the size of a multi-effects board) model guitar emulator (anything from Tom Scholz Boston type sounds to a pseudo Rick bass to acoustic guitar or Beatle-esque electric 12 string. I've know Gregg for about 15 years and NEVER seen him plug a standard guitar plug into the instrument. I've tried to show them both the truth and light, but they serve their own tonal gods. Both are good guys. Gary knows more songs than anybody I've ever played with, and picks tunes up with amazing ease, great ears.

I'll be performing with Green Paint Saturday, October 12, for Octoberfest at Pub Yahoo in Carol Stream - our 1 1/2 hour afternoon set starts at 3:00 pm - outside if weather permits. Also appearing will be New Fun Band and Heebie Jeebies.
