Olie, doubled in size? Man, I know I've been hitting the Oreos pretty hard, but geez.

What Olie means is that I'll be joining him in his trek North. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

It looks like there will be quite a contingent of out of town folks.

I'm still looking for a show to go to. The Eldar Trio is at the Jazz Showcase May 28 - 30th so I might try to get tickets to that. I also noticed that Spinal Tap is playing the Chicago Theatre on the 30th so I might pick up tickets for that if nothing else pans out.

And Mike still waiting to hear if you schedule anything with Noah between May 23-30.

Keith,
Our 2nd guitarist for NGB (Gary) and our soundman Craig are on a fishing trip that week. All Noah has booked is a solo acoustic set on the 23rd at Chord On Blues in St. Charles, opening for Backyard Tire Fire, and two acoustic duet shows with another singer-songwriter named Mer: May 29th at Curly's in Glen Ellyn and May 30th at Flip Flops in Carol Stream.

Mike,
I'll be staying in St.Charles so maybe we could meet at Chord On Blues if it is convenient for you (you say you are a western suburb person). I'll buy you a beer.

Looking at the clubs calendar I see the Boyzz are still around. I remember them from my high schools days. As a matter a fact I bought my first mixing board from Dan Buck.

I'll give you a holler when I am closer to being there.

Now I don't mean to stereotype all Alembic owners as a bunch of pot smoking, peace loving, hippie Deadheads (ha ha ha ha ha).

BUT...just in case some Grateful Dead tunes wind up getting played at the upcoming Chicago gathering, I want to be able to join in! Can anyone point me to some good tab books. I can't seem to find a decent one anywhere.

I have to admit that I never listened to the Dead much. But I just pulled out an old 3 CD set from the Filmore East 1971 and I'm having a lot of fun trying to play along. As for Jerry's style, a lot of the solos seem to be major chromatic stuff. Is this right? I'm not used to that so maybe a book that goes into the basis of his style a bit would help.

Jonathan:

Try www.rukind.com.  There you will find tabs of just about all the Dead tunes, songs the Dead covered, and even some video demos of licks.

Some Dead would be very cool. Given that we're in the Chi-town area, I would hope we can try lots of stuff. I've got a little itch to pull out Mercy, Mercy, Mercy by Cannonball Adderly... anybody else like Hot Tuna? Miles? (stop me before I run at the mouth ....more)

A 12 bar blues pattern played at various tempos can always open itself up to some great improvisation.

Another fun trick is to have someone (like the drummer!)call out a key and then let the drummer (intentionally) change tempos through out the jam. Doing this can help prevent the jam from becoming boring.

Damnit!!!! Another one I can't make and it'll be sponsored by Bag End...are you F*#*%%&#g kidding me! I'll be playing the Warren Amphitheater in Warren, Ohio that early evening. I tried to think of a way to fly out and make it but given time constraints and Chi-town traffic to and from the aero-puerto it's no dice. Damn this is going to be cool, a chance to meet some fellow freaks and some jamming..........Damn!...

Adam,
Barrington is out in the burbs shouldn't be more that a 30 minute drive on a Saturday. I don't know how long the drive is to/from the airport on the other end. If you leave Barrington by 5PM you should have plenty of time. I'll even bring the beer and buy you lunch if you make it. :-) Heck I'll pick you up at O'hare.
