After a long thinking I started the new year with the purchase of my first Alembic. It's an Orion 4 Walnut Burl and as soon as I've got some digital pictures, I'll put them in the Showcase. There's not a lot of Orions to be seen there, unfortunately...

One of the reasons why I've decided that I had to have an Alembic is the fact that I'm an 'amateur' Deadhead (too young to have been a pro) and a big fan of the work of Phil Lesh.

It's very nice to be able to take part in this forum / community, knowing that I'm really the proud owner of one of these fabulous instruments and with that of a small part of the Alembic heritage...

Thanks for the nice welcome. Yes, I got my bass at Edwin's store. He's very friendly and I got a great deal. My Orion is a fabulously looking, playing and sounding instrument with a classy, somewhat understated appearance, which I like very much. From close range the wood looks stunning, especially the area around the tailpiece. Let's see if I can post some pictures right away... the whole bass:

That's a unique and very nice looking top wood. For some reason, it seems that my perception of the Orion body shape is more effected by the top wood than my perception of other body shapes; I don't know why that would be, it just seems Orions tend to look different depending on the top wood more than others. And this one looks very nice indeed.

Well Paul, I wrote this long bit about the Dead and then accidentally closed the window. So I'll start over.

I want to help.

There are lots of legally available free mp3's of Grateful Dead live shows to be found on the web. So you can listen to some tunes to get an idea of what the Dead are about before investing cash in a CD. There are a wide variety of styles and periods in Grateful Dead music and fans have their favorites. Personally, I prefer the tunes that are more complex rhythmically, but then I also love a lot of the simpler acoustic tunes. Some people love the Dead and others don't. I recommend you listen to a wide variety of styles and periods and give them a chance to grow on you. Phil Lesh's lines may not make sense initially, but listen to them as part of the whole ensemble. For me, one of the great things about the Dead is their improvisational ensemble playing, which is the style of music I like to play. Well, the top wood isn't Burl Walnut after all (thanks again for the info Valentino!), but California 'grafted' walnut... Glad to know the exact specs and birthday of my bass!

Nice looking collection! Welcome to this humble conversation pit. Good people, good ideas, really positive (compared to lots of others).

Phil Lesh and the Dead were my first connection with Alembic. I think Lesh is one of the least recognized (due to his unique and subtle playing style - maybe his unique singing voice, too!) bass wizards of the rock and roll age. I have been privileged to follow the band since '72 and witness some really great shows, instruments and equipment. Summer, '02 I was lucky enough to take my teenage son (guitar) and his bandmates to see the Other Ones reunion at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. Nice chance to complete some kind of circle there...

Once I played my first Alembic, I knew it was the ultimate player's bass and offered the most intriguing potential for finding the sounds I hear on the inside. Of course, the recording world is populated with a reasonable few other great artists who have spent time (long or short) on the Alembic road.

Paul: The links Dave provided give you free access to an immense variety of Grateful Dead music and styles. Really eclectic. Not everyone's cup of tea, but many of us have found a lot there to listen to.
