Hi all

I've just become the proud partner to a beautiful 2000 Walnut & Mahogany Orion.

All I can say is that my wife now has competition as to who gets to sleep with me and she (my bass) makes playing my old Warwick feel like playing a plank of wood with rubber bands attached.... truly awesome...

Paul, welcome and congrats on the Orion.
Of course you don't have to fall into the same trap as the other Pauls, but a lot of them here have titles after their Paul. Examples are something like Paul tgo (the good one, or maybe it's the guitar one), the bad one, the old one, etc.

Hi Paul, am i right in thinking you got that orion from a guy in Birmingham recently off an ebay auction?

If so I did actually go to check out that bass in person.
It plays like a dream and the seller seems a good guy too. I would have liked that bass if the price was a bit keener.
Anyway enjoy that Alembic, you won't regret the purchase.

btw I used to work in Redcar a couple of years ago whicn is not too far away... Small world

Hi Jazzyvee.... Yep it did come from the guy in Birmingham, bought it away from the auction though.

It was your post on Bassworld that made me feel a whole lot more comfortable about the purchase
(between parting with cash and receiving her) thanks for helping to keep me sane.

I spent about 3 hours working on her yesterday getting the set-up right, cleaned, polished, fretboard oiled, heavier gauge strings helped (DR Black Beauties look awesome!), the ones that were on it weren't pulling hard enough to get any relief in the neck so I found it very buzzy.... now perfect (for me)

Went for my fortnightly counselling session (read - bass lesson) last night and my tutor could't believe it hadn't just come out of the factory!!!! I had to make him look at the serial number before he would accept that it was 5 years old!!!!!

Needless to say I think I've found my life partner... now.... She needs a Europa to keep her company when I'm not around! :-)

Hello Paul, congratulations on the Orion! I'd love to see photos of it. Don't be to hard on the Warwick. They make a nice junior partner to the Alembic. My tag team is an Epic and a Thumb Bass.

and welcome from the central states of the US. I hope you enjoy your new bass for many years to come. And yes, pictures would be most welcome. I believe one of our Belgian brothers has just put his Orion up for sale also (he's also got a beautiful EVH model to keep his tears from flowing too heavily).

Glad to be of help Vipa. It is a cracking instrument.
I normally use heavier gauge strings than those on the Orion you bought. but it still sounds great. I do use standard gauge 40's on my sc and i do like the sound of them. I am thinking of just going down to a slightly lighter gauge when they are due for a change as I do a lot of Stanley Clarke covers in my band and the lighter gauge may give me just that bit extra bite. But being a short scale bass that may make the strings a bit sloppy.

Anyway, I know you will enjoy the bass. I don't suppose there are many Alembics around in the UK as apart from mine I have only ever seen two others at gigs in the uk. The first was at a Stanley Clarke concert and the other was at a Jazz club in Birmingham.

Hi Paul and Welcome to the club from one of the scottish contingent. There's 4 of us up here that we know about although one is american and I'm english. I see you're in Stockton, I have several relatives in the darlington - northallerton area. Next time I'm down there, I'll give you a shout and we can maybe get together to compare basses. The only Alembic guy I know of in your area is Mark Stannage who lives near Robin Hoods bay. He's having a Further guitar built but it's had a few traumatic episodes. Hopefully it'll arrive soon so you can have an alembic day in north yorks.

Wow....

This is awesome... It's like becoming part of a family, maybe a north of UK Alembic day is in order :-)

It was Jimmy Johnson who got me started, I was watching a James Taylor Concert and was taken aback by his playing style then noticed the bass and thought... hmmm what's that? did some digging and the rest as they say is history!

My musical roots are firmly in rock, mainly Rush and bands of that Genre but have a hugely eclectic musical taste, most people can't comprehend my music collection as they want to bracket me and can't, it litterally goes from the Sex Pistols at one end and ends up at Mussorgsky at the other.

Anyway, thanks for the huge welcome, I'll post some basic pics of my Orion and rig as soon as the final piece of the jigsaw arrives tomorrow (SWR Goliath III) with some better quality ones to follow when I get back off Holiday next week.
