Hello Alembic lovers!
« on: June 27, 2007, 01:43:53 PM »
Hey all,

Just thought I'd introduce myself.  I am Greg Horton, age 43 from Cape Cod MA USA.  I am not a professional musician by any means...just a software engineer who loves the bass.

I just got my first Alembic a few weeks ago, a '99 Essence 4 with Europa electronics.  Very nice!

I was looking for something different in sound then the Rickenbackers that I owned.  I have an '87 Rick 4003 and had bought a new 75th Anniversary Rick 4003 (only 75 made).  They sounded too much alike and I liked the thin neck of the '87 better, so I sold the 75th Anny edition to buy a few other basses, for variety.  One is the Essence, then I got a Fretless Fender and still am looking for a 5-string.  I also have a P-bass knockoff.

So now, all I have been playing is the Alembic, and I love it!!

My favorite bass players are Chris Squire, Tony Levin, Mike Gordon, Jeff Ament, Les Claypool, and Tina Weymouth.  I am strictly a finger style player, but appreciate some good slapping & popping!

Thanks!

Welcome to the club and the world of Alembic, Greg.  The bass player in my band played a Gibson for about 25 years.  A couple of years ago he bought a new Fender Jazz.  He loved it.  Then about a year ago, I found an Epic 5 on craigslist for a song.  I grabbed it and lent it to him to spec.  He took it home for a week and decided to buy it.  I haven't seen the Fender since!  There is nothing like an Alembic.  I have several Alembic guitars, from a 1976 Series 1 to a custom Further I took delivery on last week.  Enjoy your new baby and stick around.  This club is full of great people with lots of knowledge about Alembics and music stuff in general, as well as a far-reaching panoply of other subjects.

Thanks Bill.  I love these forums, and am a regular at the RickResource Rickenbacker forum.  Great guys in these places.

Hi Greg,
Welcome to the club! I want to be the first club member to hound you to post some pics of you and your Alembic here! We all love to see the beautiful guitars and big broad smiling faces of the happy campers who lovingly play them! Enjoy!

Hi Kris.  I did post one picture of my Essence in the Showcase section.  It's got a really cool top I think....pretty irregular for Bocate from what I've compared to here but I love it!

WARNING! These instruments are addictive, Everyone starts out with just 1 and then like something out of a Marvel comics / Sci Fi plot, WHAM! you find another or order one made specificly for you. You find yourself : manipulating your cash to make it happen, visiting this site many times a day, devouring the custom archives, following builds of people you will most likely never even meet!
But on the bright side they won't make you fat, lazy, brain damaged, pregnant or a lousy player.
Welcome
My name is Danno........and I'm..........an.....Alembiholic.

Welcome to the club Greg.  I seem to now have suddenly developed a fondness for matching wood covered knobs.  Danno, you're right; it's addictive.  Enjoy your bass!

I was just looking at yours in another thread grooveman.  Is that a Bocate top as well?

The basses are addictive in general for me (severe GAS I guess).  I do like them to have very different characteristics sound-wise though.  At least that makes it easier to justify having them to my wife!

I'm not shure, maybe Bocate, maybe 'quartersawn Zebra' ... but I didn't get the official info yet! However, I love this wonderfull piece of wood!

TIP > If your wife make's to much trouble about it ...
Solution 1. - Trade her for 3 Alembics
Solution 2. - Give her lessons on a Alembic!
Solution 3. - Give her some qualitytime to!

Maybe it wil help to justify, but I've try'd all, nothing's help ... I'm divorced now! I did warn you ....

But anyway, I hope you have a good time with your beauty!

PS.
And this for Flip (see fc_spoiler profile) ... don't put your Alembics on the ground that way ...
... you could scratch the strapholders! For god sake ... be carefull ... it's an Alembic! ;-))))
