Hi
« on: July 02, 2007, 12:51:28 PM »
Hello all, I am a new alembic owner and new to the discussion board. Just took delivery of a coco bolo MK5 deluxe. It is by far the best electric bass I have ever played. Being an upright player also, I am used to serious craftmanship in instruments but hats off to Alembic for putting the electric bass up there with the great craft of luthiers down the centuries. One of my main reasons for being drawn to Alembic is a love of Jimmy Johnsons playing. I notice there are some links here of Jimmy so I thought you may appreciate this one I found on youtube.

Jimmy does a solo and I love the humanity that is displayed when he stumbles on a little unexpected harmonic consequence of a thing in thirds. Its reassuring to know that the greatest players on earth still have surprises under their fingers. I think Jimmy is a rare model of a modern electric bass player, in that he is a hugely capable player but always keeps his choices directed at the right thing for the music. Rare in these bass gymnastics days.

Thanks Reid, seems to me that alembic owners are generally people of taste (that includes me now lol) so liking Jimmy should fall into that bracket also
thanks for the welcome

Welcome to the club, Jake.  I couldn't agree more about Jimmy playing what the music needs, not what the player needs.
Congrats on getting the MK.

Welcome to the club from another Uk member Jake. I'va also recently taken delivery of an MK5 deluxe to add to my Epic and Rogue. it really is a fantastic instrument. You'll find that, on this forum at least, Jimmy johnson is held in the highest regard. His playing is incredibly tasteful.
If yoou ever head to Scotland, there's a few of us that would be happy to get together to discuss Alembics and drink beer ;-)

A reply to both Rich and Graeme, thanks for the welcome guys, I can tell I'm going to like it here, not quite as much as playing my Alembic you'll understand. Graeme I do sometimes gig in scotland and have in the past done stints at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh, and being a big fan of your fine land I always jump at the chance to get up there. If I do again I will hold you to that pint.

Hello Jake, good to meet you.  Congratulations on the MK.  Feel free to post photos we love that sort of thing around here.  You'll have several Alembic brothers in or around London as well as the rest of the UK.

I've  just got back from an Allan Holdsworth gig. Jimmy  Johnson was playing his alembic Series II bass.
I had a chat with him after the gig, very briefly.

Yep, big fan of JJ too!
GREAT sound!
I do remark that JJ seems to play with a very soft touch, his fingers barely moving above the nend of the neck. The sound don't get wompy but still has that Alembic freshness and glass.
Something to try!

Yep he sure does play with a soft touch and was always at the bottom of the neck,
I have to say that his sound was very bassy and the clarity of  his individual notes didn;t come out very well. I asked Jimmy about that after the gig and said he went di into the mixer and didn't use an amp for the gig. He said the sound was great on-stage and that out front was the engineers responsibility.

He seems a nice guy.
