Hello from Brazil
« on: September 22, 2008, 06:49:21 PM »
Hi everyone, my name is Mario Souza Lima.

I live in Brazil, at Sao Paulo, our biggest City. Some time ago I reallized my dream of owning an Alembic when I bought this Rogue.

Since I saw Stanley Clarke playing his Brown Bass for the first time I knew someday I would have mine. One day I saw this second hand Alembic and got the courage to try it (in my mind Alembics were just for the riches).

It sounded great, even disconnected, and I made all my efforts to get it. To my great joy it was more affordable than I ever thought an Alembic could be and soon I shooked my wife showing up with one more Bass (my fourth).

I was affraid she wouldn't understand why I did it (since we're always short on money), but when I played to her she simply smiled.

Years later she told me that she digged the bass was too expensive, but really understood the importance to me of finally having an really good Instrument to play.

Love that Gal!
Love this Bass!

It is fairly ordinary (if you can call an Alembic ordinary!), but have a beautiful figured Maple top with some bird's eye spots spreadded on wood's intricated pattern.

Know my work better at youtube and myspace looking for FARUFYNO.

Mario,
Welcome to the club.  You'll find there are a lot of good people (and some very understanding spouses, like yours) here.

This Maple has multiple personalyties, some flames, some birds-eye drops and - the photo doesn't shows - a little greyish stain suggesting an aspiring never-will-be buckeye ;-)

Hello Mario and welcome to the club.  My mother has a friend from Sao Paulo who is a guitar and bass player.  He visited this spring and bought an off-the-shelf Made in U.S.A. Fender P-bass in New York City for about $800.00.  He brought the bass back to Sao Paulo and he said that he has been offered as much as $7,000.00 (U.S.) for the bass.  Is he exaggerating or are American instruments that desirable there?  I'm wondering of I could finance a trip to Brazil by bringing along a couple...

Hello, Mario! I do not think any Alembic Rogue is ordinary. There is something about this body style that just gets me going. Welcome!

Well, I'm also new and also from Brazil and let me clear that for you! Today, if you go down to a shop to get yourself a simple Made in USA P-Bass, you will pay the equivalent to US$3500, more or less. The taxes here are pretty high. I for instance bought a Fender Custom Shop Jazz bass in the US now, and sold it here for a bit more than US$4000, and with that money, the only Alembic (of the few in existence here) I could afford, was a 81 Distillate. In the US, I could have bought an used Series II for that money, right?
Because instruments here are really expensive, I believe financing your trip with that could be a bit dangerous, as it is pretty hard to sell good instruments here (unless you can sell it underpriced, like I did). But it might be worth the shot.
If there is anything else you or anyone else wants to know, I'll be glad to help!
And if you would like to get a small glimpse of my Distillate, check it out here:
