Mica, I know this is one of the first Epics, but can you tell me how many were made before it or what number it is(Epic) It is 93W8032

Hello to you all,
 
Last week I found these '93 Epic in a local shop and now she's mine. Used Alembics are hard te get in Holland so it was now or never..
 

 
The serialnumber is 93W7986, also one of the first Epics.

But for now; That's a real cool bass. Indeed used Alembic are very hard to get, I'm always looked for a specific one, but it doesn't come along. But one day......
Your day has come, and be happy with it. Let us all know how things are going, and send in a few more pictures.

Welcome-welcome Rembrandt , welcome in this weird ultimate low frequencies-club of bass-players. I think you made a good choice, Alembics are for live ...at least you keep one of them just as a reference.
You will meet soon some other Brothers from boven de Moerdijk together with a bunch of the most friendly people you will ever meet in your live, coming from all over the world. I warn you for some other Paul's coming up: a good one who is always yelling pictures-pictures-pictures (but you did that already so he will stay calm) and a fake one who is in fact Kermit the frog in disguise. Both of them have somthing with beer: the first makes it, the second drinks it.  
Anyway ...that's enough nonsense for a first meeting, welcome again and it is good to have you here.

The Alembic is great, I've played one before in London back in '98, had no cash then, but I finally got one. I play Fender Jazz for years, but the Epic will now be my main bass...
The European Alembic Meeting, sounds good...

Hey Rembrandt,I too played a Fender J-bass for 10 years before stumbling across an Epic 4 in 94' and have been helplessly addicted to Alembic products ever since.That's just it.Once you play an Alembic everything else just pales in comparison and nothing will satisfy but an Alembic.At least it's like that for me.

Paul The Preacher Man(TBO) speaks the truth. We are a little off-center here. By the way Rembrandt, I like those doors ;) I'm assuming they are pocket doors by the hanles( or lack of).
 
Now, back to the Epics at hand! These are some funky looking basses. How do you guys like them? Does that upper horn get in the way? How do they sound??? I would love to hear a sound sample of each of those beauties!

Wow, you're right. I didn't even notice the doors the first time, but initial focus was clearly directed towards the bass.
 
And then for a moment I thought maybe it was a mirrored wall, but it does have those handles. Nice (the bass, I mean... :-)
 
Not to be critical, but the perspective could have been adjusted to give the peghead slightly better alignment with the handles. Would have been very Escher-like, I think.
 
Yes, we're all weird in our own little ways, some of which are perhaps related to appreciating beautfiful woods, and craftsmanship, as much as we do. Welcome.
 
(So how do the doors sound, anyway?)

Sliding doors, dividing the living room or kamer en suite, are common in Dutch houses, built before WWII. Opening and closing the doors is like a train passing by...The Epic sounds so much better..

I closed the doors to keep the cats out of front of the camera.

Good-looking Epic! I think they may have changed the design of the body very slightly, if I compare it to my 94 model (http://club.alembic.com/Images/411/4519.html?1055019057). The elbow contour on the later models doesn't stretch to the upper horn, and the lower horn is less square - but the shadows could be playing tricks on me.
 
Are those d'Addario Slow Wounds? The first time I tried a set of what they call long scales, the A string didn't even reach the tuner. No problem with the string wrapping over the nut?

I re-read my post and realized I jumped around a bit. Good catch on that one bob, (So how do the doors sound, anyway?). I'm still chuckling over that ;)
 
What I meant to say was, how do those two Epics sound? I can imagine how the doors sound!

Ha Adriaan, I think the body of my 93 is the same as your great 94 model, is must be the shadows.
 
Indeed the strings are Slowounds, they came with the Epic last week. Amazingly the string wrapping takes no effect on the sound, else I would have changed that at once.
 
Hey Paul II, as 10 year Jazz bass player, I have no trouble with the upper horn. They sound very direct, with a lot of sustain and with a clear deep low, compared with my '76 jazz. I have no sound clips at the moment, but maybe they will come...
