Hey Mickey,

I've had my name engraved on the truss rod cover on my customs. I'll bet you can send yours back to Alembic and they'll engrave it for you. Heck, you can take it to Things Remembered (the keosks in just about any mall) and they'll do it for you.

Excellent idea Stoney, Thanks...I never thought about that. I was planning on sending the whole bass back, but on second thought, my name on the brass truss rod cover will do just fine.

Hey Rami, nice collection. I had a question about the two pickup vermillion Excel. I was wondering how the fatboy sounds in the bridge position compared to the the regular position and how it compares to a MXY in the bridge? I was also wondering if you think, in your own honest opinion, that a sustain block really works.

Hi Michael,

In the bridge position on its own, the Fatboy still sounds great. It has a wide aperture so it still really growls. In fact, I credit it for the bass's great harmonics. The difference in tone between that bass and the other Excels is still rather subtle, because the pickups are so close together. But it still has has that little something extra in its sound. I also feel that any feature to increase a bass's sutain is always welcome. One of my Essence's (a '93 with standard electronics) doesn't have the sustain block. It let's me make a direct comparison in sound with my other Essences. You can hear the contribution made by the sustain block.

Hi Rami,

a question that pops up in my mind.
I know I don't have to compare playing styles, techniques and experience here but still I wonder how you made the bridge from playing 34 scale instruments to 36 (or 35). ONe of the idea's I had for my future (Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-aaaar future) project (the humble bass/The tooth) is to have a 35 or 36 scale fretless with wider spacing.
I'm a little scare about hopping from my 34 extra wide fretted scale on Bonnie to something completely new. Or shouldn't I worry?
BTW: I started to think about The Tooth in Excel template but from time to time I start wondering about Rogue. Because I definitely want it neck-through and bookmatched to center.

Hi Paul,

I have pretty long fingers. When I made the jump to 36 scale, I really didn't notice a big difference. Only when playing for an extended period did I notice my hands were a little sore. But that went away with time. If you have small hands, 36 scale probably isn't for you. If you get the chance to try one, I highly recommend it before you end up with something you can't play comfortably. But I love the added tension in the strings and of course, the amazing sustain and harmonics.
It was defintely worth it for me.

What can I say...but thanks!

I've since added a few more Alembics to my collection; Most notably a fretless version of my Funky Cool Vermillion Excel 5, and that Purple Heart Orion 5 that you can see in the Alembic Store. I also have another Ultra-Wicked Custom on the way. Look for the pics soon!
