'90 must have been a great year for Elans! This bass has a W....I....D....E neck with a sound to match! Very comfy to play however due to the very flat profile on the back.

Thanks Dave, It was difficult to photograph with that darn chrome hardware. Had to get the angle just right!

Hi , It's 90H5961. Just a bit earlier than yours. Does your bass have really wide spacing at the nut? Mike

I never really thought about it, since it's so big overall. I also have pretty big hands and play guitar. Do you have the build sheet? What do you think they are worth? I paid $1750 for mine on consignment last summer and thought that was pretty good. Nobody seems to like talking dollars and cents on here.

Mike, what a beautiful bass. Before I got an Alembic and started reading these posts I had never heard of cocobolo. I think it has to be the most beautiful wood around. The dark/med/light figuring on your Elan is outrageous!

Thanks Rich, I love the red color too. To me that is the classic look of cocobolo. I am just a total nut for this wood. It was Alembic that first opened my eyes to the beauty of exotic woods, especially cocobolo. The really facinating thing about this wood is that there are so many variations in color, grain, contrast etc. that you could have a collection of just cocobolo instruments and they would look radicaly different from each other!( check out my lefty Cocobolo Distillate in the Showcase and you'll see what I mean! ). Which brings me to my present quandry. I am stuck on what top to pick for my new custom. The problem is, I've got this idea of how the wood should look in my head and I can't seem to get past it. I am seriously considering 3752 in the wood bank though. Guess I'd better make a decision. I think Val/and company is about ready to choke me for taking so long!! Mike

Mike, I remember your Distillate, very dark. 3752 is really beautiful, too.
I found a piece of colobolo in my father-in-law's stock of wood. I don't know what I could do with it. Maybe just keep it. It is about 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 12. It has a note written on a piece of tape stuck on it, Tony, here's a piece of colobolo cut from a tree on my farm. It goes on to say that you have to be careful not to breathe in the dust, as it is toxic. I don't know myself. It would be cool to use it for something but it is pretty small. We'll see.

Rich, Where does your Father-in-law live? Most Cocobolo comes from the southern end of the Pacific side of Mexico and down into Central America. And yes, Cocobolo dust can cause a strong allergic reaction in some people. Mike

I guess I was pretty vague. My father-in-law, Tony, now deceased, lived here in Colorado. I don't know where the farm with the tree was. I thought that cocobolo came from way south too.
