I wish I could, but I haven't played any newer Alembics. Mine really has that 70's Stanley sound to it. I'm sure there is somebody here that can help you. Keavin, that's a nice song. I've never heard flatwounds sound like that. But then again, the only ones I've really heard or played are the ones that come on those Fender fretless jazz basses.

Early Alembics have the advantage of age, that's what makes them sound different. A well maintained instrument that's 30+ years old will sound totally different from a brand new one, with everything else being equal (woods, electronics, etc). The old series circuits and pickup designs have not changed since then.

Also, I find that many of the people who say that our 70's basses sounded better are not really that familiar with our product line and don't understand that they may be comparing an Orion or Excel to a 70s series bass, which of course is like comparing apples and watermelons.

A poorly maintained instrument that's 30+ years old will sound totally different from a new instrument, too. But this would probably not be characterized as in a good way.

Wasn't there a super-secret mil-spec IC that went in to the early models (used until the supply ran out, since the manufacturer stopped making them)? This was, from what I've heard, at least part of the magical sound of the 70's era instruments.

With regards to apples and watermelons: for any two items, there is a comparison that can be made that is simple, objective, and incorrect.

Brent, I have the sister s-1 to yours s/n 399. Makes me wonder how many can be produced per year. Nice photo of s/n. I dislike digital, I will film and scan photos and add them soon. Michael S.

Michael, I was looking at your pictures and thinking the same thing. Beautiful basses. The only difference that I see is the back laminate and the body core wood. I'll take some better pictures in a little and fix them up a bit and then post them on here. The glare is annoying.

Back when I was 16, I hit up my old man for a Series bass several times...all he ever bought me was a Fender Squier Bullet and a carton of Dorals.
