I started doing some modifications to my unknown bass. I put inlays in the neck and knobs. I also put a new cocobolo headstock overlay on it. Take a look. Tell me what you all think.

John, I didn't notice the dove tailed point in the earlier postings. I really like that. The knobs look great too.

Quite nice! I could not help notice some scalloping on the fingerboard near the nut. Or am I seeing things? The early basses had scalloped out nuts. I have not seen a scalloped fingerboard. Interesting...Michael

Scallopping near the nut - looks more like it's been played with the nut cut too low, so the strings have cut grooves in the fingerboard. The bridge saddles are also in strange positions.

I have been trying to figure out those scallops also. They fall between the strings, so the strings couldn't have caused them. THey don't get in the way of anything, so they don't bother me too much.

I started on the dragon inlay on the headstock last night. I'll post a pic when I get it all done.

Maybe this will help. Here is a picture of the nut on my 1972 Alembic bass. Notice that the scallops are between the strings on the nut just as they are on the fingerboard on your bass. The more detail I see of your instrument, the more Alembic it looks to me. I have scalloped nuts on all my 1972, 1973, and 1974 Alembic basses.

By the way, I really love the way you made that instrument personally yours....Michael

That's where the batteries are. It looks like there used to be a smaller plate there with 2 screws that held it on. I guess over time, the owner put the bigger battery plate and truss rod plate on.
