What bass is Stanley Using here?
« on: February 03, 2007, 02:30:11 PM »
I found this picture in my collection and wondered if it is an alembic bass?

It looks very sharp.

I don't think that is an Alembic...this picture is best for identification:

Excalibur perhaps?  Excalibur instruments were made by what was left of Stars Guitars I think.

yeah, without glasses !! I know this pinkie who play very well bass. But it's not the same bass, not the same disposition of and pickup, not the same disposition of inlays...the inlays of this bass are on the top, just under the 1rst string (E)

I think, the bass is Tune.
(Bridge is Tune tremoro bar system.)
But it is not regular products.
I will be looking for the brochures of Tune in my archives.

room037, I think you are the winner !!
But I never seen or listen to this bass, from Japan.
I don't know his sound, certainly very (?) nice... on the website, no prices are available:
http://www.cc.rim.or.jp/~tune/tune/framepage,tune,bass,catalog.htm
I was looking on the website, I don't find exactly the same model, with 3 keys up and 1 down.
I think maybe that was a picture in a Japanese tour with George Duke and Stanley take this bass in hand just for picture. He is smiling too much ;o))

Hi pierreyves,

Yes, I have never seen such 3 to 1 head on Tune.
Maybe the bass was special made or preproduction model.

This is a Hoyer T-Stax bass, built in germany in the 80s. They made beautiful instruments but bad marketing. Unfortunately they went bankrupt and were sold.
These basses were built with different pickup configurations. One of them was with Alembic copies made by Kent Armstrong.

Strange as it is, looks playable enough!
Wonder if SC was just taking it for a test ride.
Lord knows how  many basses have been tossed his way hoping for an endorsement opportunity.
Nice detective work all!

Nice looking bass too.
I wouldn't mind test driving it myself.
Gonna do some searching.
Thanks for the responses to the thread.

The lines on this remind my of another unusual bass, the Daion Power Mark XX.  I believe Olie owns a couple of these.  (I own a couple of the guitar version).

To answer OP's question:

That is definately TUNE bass.  Not the cheap crap you find in Sam's Ash now days....

Tune used to be one of those Japa-Alembic builders.  They used to make basses using woods supplied by Alembic.....

Tune was very good bass...I miss them.

This is the HOYER T-Staxx Bass made in Germany about 1985, you can see the 0-Fret and the very small neck (the fastest neck ever built. I play one of these and have to say they are very Alembiclike)
