I've never heard of Trip Wamsley before, but he's playing at the Cozmic Cafe in Placerville, CA (kind of near Sacramento) on Saturday, Sept. 1. Kind of thinking about going...

Trip Wamsley, virtuoso bassist and self-described resident of the ?Louisiana Dirty South,? survived Hurricane Rita and myriad other obstacles to crank out this shimmering, ethereal album of creative solo performances. The technical mastery required to carry this material is there and then some; he can slap, tap, arpeggiate, chord-comp, employ harmonics, and solo with the best of them. But for every one ripping piece of ?how?d he do that?? fireworks (check out ?Redneck Monolith? or ?Non A-06? if you just want your head blown off), there are two pieces that slow down and hypnotically emphasize tone, layering, atmosphere, and melody. Disposed to disparate dynamics, and using the feel, technique and mannerisms of a Michael Manring-influenced bassist, Wamsley creates a sonic universe reminiscent of a cross between Bill Frisell and modern folk acoustic guitar. Curve serves as a rewarding exercise in the Zen of solo bass composition and performance.

Go here http://www.bassplayer.tv/ and pick summer namm 07 and you can see 2 clips with Trip. One with the Alembic 8 and another demoing other basses. I got to play the 8 at namm years ago. Amazing bass. Trip is also a wonderful individual as well as an incredible musician.

I don't go to the Introductions section too often, but when I did I found Trip's own introductory thread! Toshiaki gave a link to a really nice YouTube video in there.

So basically I'm pretty much planning on going to the show if I can make it (sometimes work intrudes into my off-time...)

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to make the show tonight. I've driven over 1500 miles in the past three weeks for work, and I'm totally worn out! It's three hours round trip, and although I'll probably be kicking myself tomorrow, I don't think I'm up for it. If only it was a little bit closer, like Sacramento...

Virtuoso bassist and eclectic composer Trip Wamsley has established himself as a master of solo bass on fretless and fretted alike, with deeply warm tones and exquisitely refined technique sprinkled liberally throughout his past solo releases. But he's got a rowdy side to his playing as well, and on Ta-Da he lets loose with a downright rude barrage of overdrive, heavy picking, power chords, aggressive rock-slapping, and open jam madness. Wamsley's interplay with guitarist Chris Nix (a Beck/Johnson/Morse-influenced revelation in his own right) and drummer Tom Hurst is raw and unafraid, it defiantly occupies the ample space necessary to make this power-trio's interesting material work, and it leaves nothing on the table.
