Fly Jefferson Airplane:Jack Casady & Alembic #1!!!

Pete,  This discussion of the chronology of 072-001 has spike my recollections of the MARX MEADOWS free concerts in The Golden Gate Park.  In 1975 , one year out of High School I remember standing right at the edge of the stage watching Electric Hot Tuna playing. Jack was playing 072-001 just a few feet in front of me . I already had my two Guild Starfires, both already had work done by Alembic at the time . One of them had work started prior to my purchase and the other right after.  Both of these instruments are showcased on this site.   I also remember a Band fronted by Lisa Kindred call Ascension that played at those shows. In Accession I believe at one time there was a female Bass player that played an Alembic Bass , low serial number off course, considering this was also around 1975.  In 1976 I participated  in the control room at Golden State Studios in San Francisco  of a recording of  Lisa Kindred and others .  There are some interesting pics here  from the 1970's;

There is a pic of Jack playing the flying V that seems like post 1975 perhaps 1976 or so .

I've been a long time admirer of Jack Casady's playing, and Water Song still has a very special place in my heart and mind. Having never seen this clip before, I most humbly than you jazzyvee for posting that link. You made my day.

Davide , Yes ,I have seen that one as well . It appears that now the electronics are Series I . It is nice that the pickups and supportive  assembly for the sliding function remains.

That is an awesome picture! One question I thought Jacks Alembic was Serial #2? Can someone verify?

Here is my answer  to my knowledge ;   Mica ,Susan or Ron  or moderator please correct me if I am mistaken .

____Jack has not owned 72-01 for a long time . It was number one as an entire 100% Alembic instrument with a serial number.   It was produced before Series I/II designations . It had more of a State variable filter __ such as a Super filter SF-2
electronics configuration ( LOW PASS/ HIGH PASS /BAND PASS  )  rather then just low pass variation  as a standard Series I/II electronics package has .   72-01 CLEARLY has had electronics changes and physical repairs and changes since its birth !
I remember when in the 1990's I could have purchased this bass but I did not . I should have !

I see the photo gremlin has been feasting again, so I'll re-post the pic of the carving on the back of 72-01:

What a fascinating instrument...

Hey Wolf, thanks for the info. I currently own an Series I Alembic Small Standard Serial # 74-52. Through my communications with Mica, Susan and also Rick Turner I've come to believe that my bass was one of the ones Rick Turner made when he was still with them. He remembers the scalloped brass nut. I've always been fascinated with Jack and his playing. I loved The Airplane, they were simply the most intelligent and best mainstream rock band this country ever produced. He was a true innovator. And heard years after I bought my Alembic in 1974, that Jack had the very first one made. . .that monster looks heavy!

72-02, IIRC, was a Tele-shaped guitar for Bob Weir (now languishing behind plexiglass at a Hard Rock or some such terrible place).
