Didn't the original designed tailpiece have double slots for each score of doubled strings? Did something change?

Looking at the hammer finish bird tailpiece in Mica's June 13 post, which has double slots, I'd say the fine ridge between each set of slots is not strong enough to take the hammering.

We've seen doubled strings sharing a single slot in the tailpiece before.

Single slots weren't successful. Though we did the hammering before the machining (unlike the sample!), there was too much stress on the metal for it to hold its shape in the thickness we need. Doubled slots it must be.   Today I have shiny pickups:

  and a dull bass:

so everything is chugging along nicely now.

Mica,

If you happen to post a shot of the headstock, I think I could die happy.  This should definitely make COTM.

I've got to figure out a way to get to the Mothership before this one ships.  I need to see it in person.

Bradley, That's great idea! But my home is too far from Mothership.

Toshiaki,

See if you can get a flight to Seattle, and I'll treat you to one of the great American traditions: the Road Trip.  It is 811 miles (1305 KM) from my house, and a decently scenic drive.  I might even be convinced to take the 101 (coastal highway, and a beautiful drive).

Bradley and Harry,

I appreciate your very kind suggestion. How wonderful if I could do it! Now I can't be away on a trip but I want to visit Mothership someday.
