Restoring Mark's 1980 Series II
« on: July 29, 2004, 01:27:52 AM »
Mark's got this really cool 1980 Series II in Satinwood with a graphite neck:

But the peghead veneer is lifting and there's some finish damage all over. He's asked us to do a complete refinish. Today I caught it after prepping for the next coat of paint:

If you look down in the bridge block cavity:

you can see how brilliant the vermilion decorative laminates are. I wasn't expecting vermilion from the before pictures.   As much as I liked the vibe this bass had when it arrived, it really was in fairly good shape, seeing the vermilion spark up again is making this a very exciting job.

Mica,

Thanks for the posting, looks like some good progress has been made. I can't wait to see the new finish on the vermilion.

Dave,

Thanks for the kind words.

Hey, Mark!  I see that you've caught the rebuild bug.  Maybe as a result of seeing what a SPECTACULAR job was done on 76AC070 during the time that she resided with you?  Best of luck - and keep in touch!

Chris,

It was definitely because of the spectacular job done on 76AC070 (she is a beauty!). How is 76AC070 doing? Don't forget if you want a new Mustang I can get you an X plan.

As always, it is very nice hearing from you.

Check it out in rubout:

That Satinwood is amazing! Jonathon remembers actually building the body - he recalls the accent laminates are Nara. I couldn't quite tell so I was glad his memory is good.   Here's how the crack repairs went:

Wow! She sure looks purty there, Mark!! (slang misspelling intentional  8>)  )  Thanks for the X Plan offer. I'll take you up on it next year.  The '02 T-Bird and the '03 F-150 Heritage were traded in this week for an EXCURSION in preparation for the new 'Stang next year.  We'll likely wait until the SVT Cobra convertible is available in '06.  In the meantime, I'll keep watching this instrument's progress - enviously.  Cheers!

Yup - it's covered with Vermilion for decoration.
