Set Neck vs neck Thru
« on: October 24, 2013, 05:31:15 AM »
I have a bit of a GAS dilemma brewing. As you know I am partial to Europa's and Elan's. I also have a liking for signature electronics. I've been toying with the idea of getting some for my europa for a while and now I have seen a used 5 string Orion with signature electronics at what is now a good price for me to consider.
Would it be sensible to buy the bass, transfer the signature electronics into my standard Europa then put the europa electronics in the Orion and sell it on? Or would it be better/cheaper to just buy a set of Signature electronics for my Europa? With the first option  I could end up being cash neutral if I was able to get the same price for the Orion having europa electronics which would stll be a higher spec than the standard orion.

The thing is that, I may like the Orion as it is since with a set neck I'd be getting a different sound to my existing thru neck basses. Which would mean I'd have yet another 5 string and..... still need to quench my GAS with a Clarkee short scale Series bass.

Any views.

How about instead of deleting it, you let us know what Will and Rusty have convinced you to do.

Will is great, isn't he?

Will is a great knowledge base to consult and he has given me good advice in the past too. Rusty, whilst currently floating excitedly on a 5A quilted maple cloud, ( and who can blame him), was able to remind me of the advice I gave him when he was tempted by an alembic that wasn't in his dream plan.

Bass-ically they reminded me that with my existing basses, Series I and II basses included, the Orion is not going to give me any sound that I can't get currently from my basses. So questioned what I would gain from it other than just another alembic. So the advice was save your money and keep looking for that short scale Series bass that you really want.

Thanks guys I was ready with my credit card.

Jazzy..I think you have more than enough tone options with your gear!
Maybe I am a simple guy(no agreements please! LOL) but I have enough tone parameters to contend with from my various amps, processors and of course the MK Signature

Believe it or not I like the simplicity of my gear and get most of my tone from fingers at the bass and very little from the fiddling with the F1-x and subtle use of the SF-2. I don't have other effects or processors. So you are right I do have more than enough tone. I'm just in a GAS phase at the moment.

I'm sure it will pass after rehearsal this weekend.

Jazzyvee, I was glad to give you back your own advice!

June 15, 2013
Don't fight the urge within if you really want that bass. However from my own experience, if what you ultimately want is a series bass, this route you are taking will not quench that thirst and you will end up with a progressive collection that increases the desire for as a series bass but when it comes to selling from your collection to get one, man that is so hard to do. There is subliminal psychology present in every bass as a no cost feature and I agree with sonicus resistance is futile :-)

You steered me in the right direction on the Epic 5. Had I not listened to your advice I would not now be about to embark on my Series II Europa journey! I have always lived under the rule of Good things come to those who wait & that certainly rings true with me not getting the Epic. 4 short months after taking your advice I'm building the bass of my dreams! Your Series Stanley will come to you someday & you will be very glad you waited!
