I was wondering have any of you put nylon strings on a steel string bass.  I am thinking about doing it b/c i just love the feel of nylon and the warm deepth u get from nylon strings.

Pls post your Opinions.

Welcome to the club Brion
I've never tried nylon strings, but unless they have a wire core it would seem steel strings would respond better to the magnetic pickups.

are you talking about the black nylon tapewound strings? i have a set on a jazz bass (fretless) and i like them. they do sound warmer than steel strings, but they aren't as bold/defined either.  i have no problems with volume, though i'll admit they aren't loud strings. the ones i have are fenders, mostly because they were cheap (25$), but they sound nice enough. worth a shot if you're keen to try tapewounds.

Thnx for the welcome.  I don't have magnetic pickups on the bass i am goin to put it on.  I have one with piezo pickups and optical pickup in it.  I am talking about like pure nylon string sort of the kind you use on a Uprightbass.

Ohhh..like what they used to call gut strings. (or maybe they still do)
I remember reading about the bass that Paul TBO has, checkout the Rob Allen website..shows a nylon string they use on their basses..maybe just what you're looking for.

rob allens string suggestions are all wrapped strings, not gut strings (though i'm sure they'd work.) veillette guitars make a acoustic/electric nylon string short scale bass. they might know something.

No Nylon aren't gut string.  Nlyon took the place of Gut string seeing as the sound is simalar but nylon last longer. They are what they are string made from nylon.

If you want to get uber technical about it...the actual replacement for gut is called Perlon which Thomastik uses in their Dominant strings for orchestral stringed instruments.  However, you won't find them available for electric bass because they are only made for double basses.

Nylon is less expensive than Perlon and lasts as long but doesn't match the sound of gut the way Perlon does.  The La Bella strings Rob Allen uses are a nylon wrap with a steel core...I'm sure somewhere in some guitarron factory they have nylon bass strings though.

Lets not forget the dearmond ashbury (although it could easily be overlooked for its size) . . .

RIck Turner at Renaissance makes a bass that recommends the TI Acousticores, nylon bass strings. His are the Amplicoustic RB series, and they play and sound AMAZING. The guitars have only a piezo pickup with a DTAR Timberline preamp in them, wired for 18 volt for wider dynamic range. These are tremendously musical guitars, I can't recommend them  highly enough.

I forgot about the Ashbory...I'm surprised Bruce L. (BeeLee) didn't spot this thread as he's got a Guild version that I've seen him play out.
