Fretless with glossy fingerboard?
« on: July 14, 2006, 06:45:48 PM »
Does anyone know if alembic has ever made a fretless with a glossy fingerboard, like a Pedulla buzz bass?

And...would they be willing to do so?

I'm guessing a glossy fingerboard would be a sealed fingerboard.  I don't recall seeing an Alembic that had a fingerboard sealed at the shop.  I do recall seeing an Alembic on Ebay whose owner had a local luthier seal the fingerboard.

We've made a few. The last one was in 2004. There's a picture of it on this thread.

Ha!  I had forgotten about that thread!  I've been searching around and here is a previous thread on the subject of fretboard care.  Scroll down a little over halfway and read Mica's comments.

There's a recent Bass Player article by bass tech Dan Erlewine in which he describes finishing the maple fingerboard of a P-bass with superglue after he pulled out the frets to make a fretless.  I suppose he knows what he's doing but, personally, I like what the elves did with my Alembics just fine.
